Cape Breton University Convocation - A Special Time Convocation is the culmination of years of serious academic dedication and hard work. It is also an event to celebrate your achievements. To assist you in your preparation, the Registrar’s Office has compiled this guide outlining important dates, times and locations for Spring Convocation. Please review dates and times carefully. As well, please review answers to frequently asked questions about Convocation. If you still have questions please contact convocation@cbu.ca. Current information about Convocation is available at www.cbu.ca/convocation Follow us @ROatCBU for up-to-date information. Spring Convocation will be held Saturday, May 11th at 2:00 p.m. at the Canada Games Complex on the Cape Breton University campus, 1250 Grand Lake Road, Sydney. PLEASE NOTE: Due to capacity issues, the Convocation Ceremony will be a ticketed event. Graduands will be entitled to 4 guest tickets. A wait list will be created for anyone seeking additional tickets. Those on the waitlist will be contacted by the Registrar’s Office by Friday, May 10th should any additional tickets be made available for distribution. 2 www.cbu.ca/convocation convocation@cbu.ca
Schedule of Events There are a number of activities taking place the week of Convocation. Please take a few minutes to review this important schedule of events. **PLEASE NOTE: Guest Tickets are required to attend the President’s Dinner and the Convocation Ceremony. Tuesday, May 7 Grad Gown/Ticket Pickup Time: 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Place: Multi-Purpose Room, Cape Breton University Ticket Information For the Convocation Ceremony on Saturday, all guests invited by Graduands MUST have a ticket to attend. Tickets may be picked up on Tuesday, May 7 and Wednesday, May 8 when you pick up your gown. Graduands must RSVP to indicate the following: Whether they plan to attend Convocation, and o If yes, how many Guest Tickets (max 4) they wish to reserve, and o Whether they are requesting to be put on the wait list for additional tickets, or o If no, a current mailing address to which their parchment should be sent after Convocation. The RSVP link can be found on your Convocation invitation, which was sent to your CBU email address. Graduands have the option to reserve up to 4 guest tickets at no cost (Graduands do not require a ticket to attend). If you are interested in receiving more than 4 guest tickets, you can request that your name be put on a wait list when you respond to your invitation. Wednesday, May 8 Grad Gown/Ticket Pickup Time: 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Place: Multi-Purpose Room, Cape Breton University Please see ticket Information on previous page. Thursday, May 9 President’s Dinner Cocktails: 6:00 p.m. Dinner: 6:30 p.m. Place: Kluscap Room, 2nd floor Membertou Trade & Convention Centre Tickets may be picked up on Tuesday, May 7 and Wednesday, May 8 when you pick up your gown. For the President’s Dinner, Graduands are entitled to one complimentary ticket for themselves with the option to purchase two additional guest tickets at $20 each. If you are interested in purchasing more than two guest tickets, you can request that your name be put on a wait list when you pick up your gown. Saturday, May 11 Assembly for Graduands Graduands are required to assemble by program promptly at 1:00 p.m. to ensure they are in the appropriate lineups to allow the ceremony to begin on time. Please be on time! Time: 1:00 p.m. Place: Sullivan Fieldhouse, Cape Breton University Convocation Ceremony We ask that graduands and guests stay for the entire ceremony. Time: 2:00 p.m. Place: Canada Games Complex, Cape Breton University **PLEASE NOTE: Guests MUST have a ticket to attend the Convocation Ceremony. Graduates’ Reception An open reception for graduates and guests will take place immediately following the ceremony. All are welcome! Frequently Asked Questions How Many Guests May I Bring to the Convocation Ceremony? Graduands are entitled to 4 guest tickets for the Convocation Ceremony, at no cost. Graduands do not require a ticket to attend. All guests MUST have a ticket to attend Convocation. You must formally RSVP with the number of tickets you require through the RSVP on your Convocation Invitation which was emailed to your CBU email account. If you would like to request more than 4 tickets, you can have your name put on a wait list, also available through your emailed invitation. You will be contacted by the Registrar’s Office by Friday, May 10 if extra tickets become available. Reserved seating for graduates and others will be clearly marked. Seating is also available for those with special needs. To make seating arrangements, please call (902) 563-1404 or convocation@cbu.ca by April 29, 2019. When Do I See the Final Graduation List? This list will be posted on the bulletin boards outside the Registrar’s Office, Marvin Harvey Building on Monday, May 6 at 1:30 p.m. The list will also be posted at www.cbu.ca/convocation on the same date and time. PLEASE NOTE: Graduating students will not be forwarded any degree, diploma or certificate parchment until all fees, fines or other accounts owed to Cape Breton University are paid in full. Your name will appear on the final graduation list, but you will only be able to participate in Convocation ceremonies once your bill is paid. What Do I Need to Know About My Academic Dress? Students receiving degrees, diplomas or certificates wear black gowns and the appropriate hood or stole depending on their program (see section on Regalia). No academic caps are worn. It is important that students pick up their academic dress during the dates listed in the Schedule of Events. Students will be available to assist you in picking out your academic dress. Please note: Gowns may require pressing. Students are responsible for their academic dress until it is returned. All academic dress must be returned promptly after Convocation to the same location where it was picked up, the Multi-Purpose Room. If academic dress is not returned, the full replacement cost of $200 will be charged to the graduate. What about Borrowing Academic Dress for Photos? If you would like to borrow academic dress for photos, you must contact the Registrar’s Office at least two days in advance of the date on which you would like to borrow it at 902-563-1404 or convocation@cbu.ca 7 www.cbu.ca/convocation convocation@cbu.ca
Is there accommodation for out-of-town guests? There are a number of hotels, motels, and bed and breakfasts located in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. Guests can contact Destination Cape Breton at 902-563-4636. The Cambridge Suites Hotel in Sydney is offering a special rate of $131 CDN + tax per night. For more details, contact the Cambridge Suites at 902-562-6500. The Hampton Inn by Hilton Sydney is offering a special rate of $149 CDN + tax per night. For more details, contact the Hampton Inn by Hilton Sydney at 902-564-6555. Will the ceremony be broadcast online? For graduates, family members and friends who cannot attend Convocation, the ceremony will be livestreamed. The livestream will begin at 2 pm Atlantic time. A link will be provided at www.cbu.ca/convocation. Due to the videotaping of the ceremony, access to the stage and graduate seating area is not permitted. When is the best time for photos? After the official convocation ceremony, join your Cape Breton University Alumni family outside the Multi- Purpose Room, Great Hall to receive your commemorative Alumni champagne flute and sparkling beverage, get a photo with your fellow grads and Alumni, and learn how to keep in contact with your CBU Alumni family as you embark on the next stage in your life! Will parking be available on campus? All on-campus parking (with the exception of all marked ‘reserved’ spaces) will be free for the duration of the convocation ceremony and reception on May 11, 2019. 8 www.cbu.ca/convocation convocation@cbu.ca

Contact Information It is important that students notify the Registrar’s Office of any change of address so their records are current. This also enables the Alumni Office to maintain contact with you. The University cannot accept responsibility for information sent to an outdated address. By keeping addresses updated, students can stay informed of the latest news at Cape Breton University. Release of Mailing Addresses The Cape Breton University policy on the release of student information does not allow for the release of mailing addresses. However, the Alumni Office and offices of the provincial political parties have requested the names and addresses of our graduates. If you do not wish for your contact information to be released, please contact the Registrar’s Office in writing by April 29, 2019. It will be assumed those who have not done so have consented to release of information. We hope this booklet has provided you with information you need to ensure your Convocation is a special time.
