7/9/2021 Constant Contact Canada Day The name Canada comes from the Huron-Iroquois word “Kanata” meaning village. Thinking of this 154 year old country as a village is the perfect metaphor for a nation founded by many https://campaign-ui.constantcontact.com/campaign/campaigns/list 1/7
7/9/2021 Constant Contact nations including French, English, First Nations, Innu, and Metis peoples. We are like a village of diverse peoples, a community in progress, a grand experiment in inclusion. But many of our Indigenous villagers are hurting this year. With the discovery of remains in unmarked cemeteries at residential schools in Kamloops British Columbia, Cowessess Saskatchewan, and Brandon Manitoba; there is much in our history that needs to be grieved as well as celebrated. So this year, Canada Day celebrations are being toned down or canceled across the country to commemorate the heartbreaking history of our country’s residential school system. Canadians are being invited to consider wearing orange rather than red as part of the “Every Child Matters” movement, to acknowledge the traditional territories on which they live, and to refrain from displays of fireworks while our neighbours are marking funerals for children who never came home. So let us take a moment today; to reflect on the true history of Canada with it’s good, bad, and downright ugly parts. And let renew the commitment to remember, reconcile, and reimagine a more inclusive Canada. Musical Guests This week's musical guests are Dana Jean Phoenix, Kelly Holiff and Brenda MacIntyre! 7/9/2021 Constant Contact This year’s Honouring Our Heroes award was presented to the thousands of survivors of Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Gender Expression Conversion Therapy who have spoken up and spoken out about the trauma this unscientific and abusive practice engenders. Conversion therapy survivors have told their stories in the media, to politicians, and in progressive faith communities like ours. Thanks to their initial advocacy, and that of many organizations including MCC Toronto, the practice was banned in Ontario in 2015. Their continued efforts have now led to Bill C-6 banning Conversion Therapy in Canada which just passed in the House of Commons last week. Jonathan Brower and Erika Muse, two leading advocates of conversion therapy, accepted the award on behalf of countless survivors. Watch their acceptance speech by clicking on the video above! Our Tentative Plans for Returning to in-Person Worship Service As most of you will know, the second phase of Ontario’s reopening plans went into effective yesterday (June 30). And while we continue to be encouraged by a decrease in infection numbers and hospitalizations, we are still a bit away from returning to in-person Worship Services. You may recall that we wrote you last month to share our hope that we may be able to resume in-person Services in the fall of 2021. We are still working toward that time line and remain hopeful that we may able to celebrate a true Homecoming by mid-September. What our resumed in-person Worship Services will look like remains to be seen, and will depend on the public health recommendations at the time, but - like you! - we cannot wait to be together again! Summer Book Study MCC Toronto invites you to join us for a special six-week book study on Ibram X. Kendi's book, "How to be Anti Racist", beginning July 6. The purpose of this book study is to read and reflect on the concepts in the book, and to explore our own relationships to race, power and privilege, and to deepen our capacity to interrupt racist behaviour when we encounter it. We will consider how the concepts in Kendi's book play out in our lives and look at how anti-racist action relates to Christian teachings. As the online class is being capped at 12 individuals, please pre-register by July 2 to office@mcctoronto.com. https://campaign-ui.constantcontact.com/campaign/campaigns/list 4/7
