Busting the Myths Behind How Much
Water You Should Drink
How much water should you drink?
Forget the simple math—eight glasses a day isn’t the answer. And forget the
complicated math, too—half your body weight in ounces isn’t right, either. In
fact, there’s no formula that gives you the magic number for hydration. “It’s really
dependent on your individual needs,” said Tyler Florek, a registered dietitian
nutritionist at Banner Del E Webb Medical Center in Sun City West, AZ.
How many calories you eat, how much you weigh, how active you are and what
health requirements you have all play into how much water you need to drink.
Florek said that instead of measuring cups or ounces of water, look to your urine
to tell if you’re drinking enough. Your urine should be light yellow and almost
odorless. Dark yellow urine with a strong odor means you aren’t getting enough
water. If you aren’t drinking enough water, you might also notice signs such as
fatigue or headaches.
You don’t want to overdo it with water, either. Drinking more than about a liter
of water per hour for several hours can cause water intoxication, where your
electrolytes get out of balance. It can cause headaches, nausea, and vomiting,
by Stephanie Thurrott , Contributing Writer
and in extreme cases it can be fatal. by Stephanie Thurrott , Contributing Writer

What’s the big deal with drinking water?
CAPTION CALL FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED

Can drinking water help you lose weight?
“Water itself doesn’t have any special weight loss properties,” Florek said. But if you replace high-calorie, sugar-
sweetened beverages with water you could see some weight loss. Florek recommends choosing water as your main
beverage as much as possible.
Don’t waste your money on things like alkaline water, though. “Your stomach has a way of strictly managing the
pH of foods and drinks you consume. So as soon as you drink alkaline water, your body neutralizes it. There is no
scientifically proven benefit to drinking alkaline water,” he said.
And it’s a myth that caffeinated drinks dehydrate you. They may make you need to urinate, but you won’t expel more
water than you took in. Water is still the best choice, though.

Gila County Health Department
COVID Testing and COVID Antibody Testing
What tests are administered?
 • Binax Rapid – a fast test, administered through a nasal swab, used to detect current COVID infections. Ready in 15
minutes or less. Useful for people experiencing symptoms.
 • Abbot PCR – Most accurate test for current COVID infection, whether experiencing symptoms or not.
Administered through a nasopharyngeal swab. Ready in 15-20 minutes.
PCR tests can be used to test those who need negative test results before surgical procedures and/or travel to areas
that require a COVID test before entry. Appropriate paperwork for travel and surgery will be provided upon request.

Rapid COVID Antibodies Tests
 • Antibodies are produced in the body as part of the Immune response. These antibodies help your body fight future
or potential COVID infections, and act as a protective factor. These protective antibodies can be present in the
body after a previous COVID-19 infection, or after receiving a COVID-19 vaccination. Because of this, COVID
Antibodies testing can be useful for those who are curious to know if they have COVID antibodies, or if they have
had COVID in the past, even if they were never symptomatic or never diagnosed.

How are tests administered?
 • Tests are administered while patients wait in their vehicle. Upon arrival, patients will call the office and will be
directed to a designated parking spot. Staff will administer the test. Patients can wait 10-20 minutes for results or
can request results be delivered via phone call.

Cost?
 • FREE. NO INSURANCE REQUIRED. ANY AGE FROM ANYWHERE.

Why is COVID Antibody Testing useful?
 • Besides satisfying the curiosity of those who would like to know if they have COVID antibodies, this testing is a
crucial component of data collection. The more tests performed, the better the researchers and public health
professionals are able to predict COVID hotspots, assess regional immunity, and collect information about the
timeline of the body’s immune response to COVID infections and vaccinations. Ultimately, antibody testing is a
crucial tool, used to track and address the pandemic.
