The full-scale production, set to the music of Pyotr Tchaikovsky and based on folklore and legend, follows a heroic young prince as he works to free the beautiful swan maiden from an evil spell. The Melbourne City Ballet Theatre and the world-renowned Ukrainian State Theatre of Ukraine join their forces for this masterpiece ballet, replete with Petipa and Ivanov’s original steps, glittering tutus, and sumptuous sets, ready to draw you into the fantasy all over again. What makes it different from other productions is that Artem blends over 100 dancers from our community with 55 professional dancers of the State Ballet Theatre of Ukraine into an unforgettable ballet magic. “Other cities have asked us to bring this concept to their theaters,” says Artem. The choreography is his trademark. Three months after the successful Swan Lake show, Covid happened. Now what? “We kept on teaching after the first initial lockdown in April,” says Katya who has several competitive ballroom students who travel from across Florida to train with her each week. By the way, these talented and fortunate dancers have already become winners of several ballroom dance competitions in the state of Florida. “We taught via zoom, with distance in the studio, and outside. We even had a 2-hour-show at Wickham Park Pavilion,” says Katya. By now they have two locations, one in Viera, the other one in Melbourne. Altogether they teach about 150 students. “It’s ground-breaking,” says Dr Susan Pinsky, Vice Chair of Community Relations. “We feel extremely fortunate that Artem and Katya have chosen Melbourne as their home and have such a pas- sionate commitment to share their experience, time, and hard work with our local dancers. Together, with your in- volvement and support, we will place Melbourne in the spotlight on the world map of ballet.” Working with these two talented Artistic Directors is a Board of Directors and Company Guild dedicated to serving the community by supporting and managing the MCBT. The Guild is 28 members strong and growing daily. For more information go to www.melbournecitybal- lettheatre.com. To find out more about the academies check out www.WeDanceAcademies.com. The Column By Chuck Van Riper Become a Hippy H ippy New Year! Hope you all didn’t get too holidazed this past season. Whew, made it through another one. Are we ready to face a new year? I’ve been pondering New Years resolutions since I haven’t made any the past decade or two. This year I think I will. What would be the best things I can do to make the world a little better. If we all did something to make the world a little better, how much could we collectively accomplish this year? Maybe we can all make a better world this year. It’s not that dif- ficult, it’s starts with the little things. I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s and was very much a hippy. Yes, I know, hippies get a bad rap for being dirty and lazy. Perhaps some were, but that’s not what it was all about. Sure, getting high was a daily occurrence and music and dancing prevailed, but there was much more to the philosophy of the movement as I see it. Concepts that we can certainly use today. The whole idea was to make a world of peace and love, to respect each other, love and nurture Mother Earth, and make a better world for every- one. Why are these concepts so foreign to us now? “Turn on, tune in, and drop out” was a major mantra of the counterculture of the day. I guess I kinda did that. After leaving college after a year, my travels began. Sometimes I would hitchhike long distances across the country. One of my most memorable experiences is sitting on an under- pass somewhere in Kansas with my backpack and guitar. It was pouring rain and I was just hanging out waiting for it to stop. I thought to my self “Hope this rain ends soon so I can continue my journey.” Then I realized that it didn’t really make a difference. I really didn’t have to be any- where and actually, I never had to be anywhere ever again at that particular moment. Such is a feeling of freedom most do not get to experience in their lifetime. Perhaps we should all experience that at least once in life. Throughout my hitchhiking adventures, I always seemed to end up at my destination with more money than when I started due to the generosity and kindness of those who would pick up a hitcher. Maybe we need more of that kindness. Some- times we would sit around passing a doobie or two around and discuss the goings on in the world at the time. There were times when disagreements arose. We didn’t get mad, we respected each other’s opinions. We pondered each 18 - Brevard Live January 2022
idea fairly. We remained friends and partied on. May- be we need more of that. We were, at times, very poor, yet scraped together enough to get a cheap little apart- ment or rent a room. We definitely need more of that. If someone needed a couch to crash on, no problem. If it was available, you shared it. If someone needed a meal, same thing. We shared what we had to help our friends, friends who would become family forever. Maybe we need more of that. Spiritual awakening was a big thing then. To understand ourselves as spiritual beings in the physical plane was a major undertaking. It didn’t make a difference, we figured, if you were following Christian- ity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, or whatever. They all led to enlightenment. We could tolerate and learn from each other. Maybe we need more of that. As a musician, I’ve had the honor of playing with great musicians from all around the world. From Germa- ny to South Africa, from Greece to France, from Ukraine to Ireland, we all played together. Sometimes the dis- cussions would turn to “What’s it like living there?”, or “What’s the food like?”, or “What kind of TV shows you have?”. What I’ve found is that people all over the world just want to live in peace and harmony and do something they love. That’s universal. It’s the greed of the powers that be that interferes with that happening. Maybe we should ponder that. Back in the 80’s, there was a call to be a “kinder, gentler nation”, although it really didn’t end up that way, did it? Well, this year I want to dedicate more time to artistic endeavors, music, art, writing, whatever. Maybe we all need more of that. Maybe we can all contribute to a kinder, gentler world. ChristMIFF 2021 continued After the red carpet everyone took a short walk down the sidewalk to Hemingway’s Tavern for the award cer- emony dinner. Hemingway’s did a great job accommo- dating the festival and its participants and I have a feeling it will become another regular component in this grand tradition. Rockstar Entertainment was on hand with their special brand of karaoke, for anyone that felt the spirit move them, and making his second appearance at the fes- tival was musician Chase Ryland soon to become a home town favorite I’m sure. The coveted awards were deliv- ered to their deserving owners and the rest of the night was a celebration of not only film, but also friends and the joy of life out in the open.
