E X P LO R E THIS BEAUTIFUL PART OF MAINE. As we head into the Summer of 2020, we are all adapting and coping as best we can in a Covid-19 world. The Chamber is working hard to support our local businesses and to facili- tate successful visits to Maine by those who consider and then choose to visit here. We recognize that we can’t do any of this alone. We very much need each other to survive & thrive. This community is rich in tradition and history. We strive to represent all areas of busi- ness & industry in order that they may succeed. Visitors should note that although we are a tourist center, our residents live & work here year round and need all types of services – fish- erman, artisans, restaurants, teachers, electricians, plumbers, mechanics, boatbuilders, etc. As a Chamber it is important that we reflect that diversity and seek out ways to expand and welcome others to do business here too. To thrive long-term, we need to continue to actively welcome people to the region to supplement our workforce and be part of the next generation of entrepreneurs. The Chamber very much wants to be a part of that process. To our visitors, we say “Enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds you on our peninsula, sample the delicious food and vibrant stores in our historic waterfront. We hope you enjoy it here as much as we do, and return in future years when things return to “normal”. Thank you. ON THE WATER ON THE WATER Boothbay Harbor has long been considered by mariners to be the finest deep- water port north of Boston and has come to be known as “The Boating Capital of New England.” As a mid-Maine stopping point on the passage between Casco Bay to the southwest and Penobscot Bay to the northeast, its beauty and quiet ambiance have no equal. Boothbay Harbor is bound by the Sheepscot and Damariscotta rivers. Tucked in and around the harbor are low-lying islands, promontories off the mainland, and pockets of water such as Linekin Bay, Townsend Gut, Mill Cove, and many other gunkholes that invite exploration. The harbor’s V-shape creates idyllic, flat waters for sailing, cruising, and kayaking with an afternoon sea breeze that typically arrives around midday. The waters off the coast of Maine are teeming with wildlife, and the Midcoast region is no exception. BOAT BUILDING ON THE WATER The boat building industry is at the heart of the Boothbay region, with commercial and recreational boatbuilding thriving throughout our peninsula and islands for nearly 300 years. The region built wooden naval vessels — minesweepers, salvage tugboats, and aircraft rescue boats — for World War I and II and the Korean War. The area is home to the nation’s oldest boat builder, Hodgdon Yachts, which began building clipper ships in 1816. Today the company has grown into one of the industry’s most cutting-edge builders, using composite materials from the aerospace industry to create truly world-class yachts. Hodgdon Yachts certainly isn’t the only boat builder in the area. The storied history of boat building in the Boothbay region continues today with local shipyards building custom luxury yachts, tugboats, day sailors, and modern lobster boats, as well as refitting schooners for use locally and around the world. WHALE WATCHING & PUFFIN SIGHTINGS Experienced captains and the latest tracking equipment almost guarantee you’ll get to see a whale when you come to the coast of Maine! There are also plenty of excursion boats offering puffin cruises to see first-hand the National Audubon Society’s success in re-establishing a puffin colony on famous Egg Rock. Along the way you may also get lucky and spot great blue heron, osprey, and other wildlife. 8 Learn more at BoothbayHarbor.com
ON THE WATER SAILING Tour the rocky coastline aboard one of the many stunning and historic schooners or sailboat charters available in the region. Experience first-hand how this captivating means of transportation operates; you may even be lucky enough to assist the captain in hoisting the sails and manning the wheel! Many sailing trips come with complimentary blankets and are BYOB. There are plenty of sailing options in the area offering exhilarating day tours and relaxing sunset tours. For those who sail for sport or just want to learn the art of sailing, there is also a wide variety of junior and adult sailing and racing opportunities at the local yacht clubs from June through September. SPORT FISHING Are you a sport fishing fan? Well, you have come to the right place! The Midcoast waters are rife with a variety of fish, making for a truly memorable fishing experience. Charter one of the many sport fishing boats for a chance to catch mackerel, tuna, striper, or even shark. The captains of these charter boats have years of experience fishing the Boothbay waters, so they know the perfect place for landing that legendary fish. Boothbay Harbor’s ample fleet of party and charter boats offers a variety of trips at a wide range of prices and is pure © Mike Leonard enjoyment and fun for all ages. Follow us on 9

LIGHTHOUSES LIGHTHOUSES There are few things more quintessentially Maine than lighthouses. Their illuminated towers were originally erected to signal the mouth of a harbor — they were a much- needed beacon for storm-tossed sailors. Today these lighthouses have become icons of coastal Maine, and visitors travel from all over the world to see them. Boaters can take a self-guided lighthouse tour to view the region’s five lighthouses. In addition to Burnt Island, there’s Monhegan Island Light, The Cuckolds Light, Hendricks Head Light, and Ram Island Light. While the last three are not open to the public, these coastal sentinels are a wonder to behold up close from the water. Venture over to Pemaquid Point in the Damariscotta region and climb the winding stairwell to the top of the historic Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. BURNT ISLAND Follow us on 21

HISTORY OF LOBSTER FISHING IN MAINE The Maine lobster industry is one of the oldest continuously operated industries in the country, dating all the way back to the early 1600s. But it wasn’t until the 1700s with the invention of the lobster smack — a sailing vessel with a circu- lating seawater tank in the hold — that the lobster industry really took off. This allowed the lobster to be transported live to the Boston and New York mar- kets. The lobster industry in Maine has grown and changed significantly since its early years. Today lobstering makes up 80 percent of the state’s commercial fishing income. For more information on how to eat a lobster see page 34. Follow us on 33
OUR FOOTBRIDGE Luther Maddocks (1845-1932), a resident of the Boothbay region for 32 years in 1901 and known for his “hustling ability” with his many enterprises, including pogy factories and sardine packing businesses, concocted the idea of building a footbridge to connect the east and west sides of Boothbay Harbor. Maddocks developed the specifications for building the bridge. He also developed the contract for erecting the footbridge. When no contractor would undertake to build the footbridge he offered to build it himself. Construction was completed on the footbridge by July of 1901. He actually built this footbridge in only 11 days. This bridge was 885 feet long and seven feet wide, with a 75 foot draw in the center. The construction included 22 piles driven into bedrock and over 32,000 feet of lumber. Luther Maddocks was a mover and shaker and gave us a phenomenal memorial, our fabulous footbridge, which not only connects east and west sides but binds us all here on this peninsula. He accomplished this amazing feat in mere days, at almost no cost to the town and at significant sacrifice of his time, talent, and treasure. By Chip Griffin HOW TO EAT A LOBSTER Twist off the claws. ISLAND LIFE From the charming swing bridge entry to the island, Southport feels very much like stepping into a bygone age. The bridge remains in excellent condition and is one of the best preserved movable bridges in Maine. Twin brothers, Dwight and Duane Lewis worked as bridge tenders for 45 years and became so synonymous with the area they were featured in the children’s book “The Littlest Tugboat” written by local author Sarah Sherman McGrail. On your way over, stop and enjoy a cocktail at Robinson’s Wharf, a local institution established over 40 years ago. With plenty of outdoor seating you can listen to live music as you watch local Lobstermen bring in their daily haul! The island is also home to Southport General Store which was established back in 1882 and is still going strong today. No trip to the island is complete without stopping off for essential supplies. They have an expansive beer & wine selection, serve delicious food and even have a gift store on site. They are the heartbeat at the center of the island which includes the 100 year old Southport Central School, Hendricks Hill Museum and the beautiful Hendricks Head Beach all nearby. Southport Memorial Library is a fantastic, well stocked library which is home to several fascinating private collections and a number of books on local hero Rachael Carson, perhaps the finest nature writer of the twentieth century who spent many of her Summers on Southport in her little cottage by the sea. Down on the shore of the harbor, children can learn the joys of sailing at Southport Yacht Club. The Club owns and maintains two buildings and dock facilities on Cozy Harbor Road. The Club has a long history of promoting boating on the Maine coast with an emphasis on sailing. You also can enjoy great seafood and burgers at Cozy’s Dockside conveniently situated next door while you enjoy one of the prettiest little harbors around. If you are looking to stay on the island, The Newagen Inn is a traditional oceanfront inn with a long tradition of celebrations by the sea. While there, you may also bump into nearby Cape Newagen Alpaca Farm who offer treks on the beautiful, island woodland trail. Take the trip over the bridge and come and visit. You won’t be sorry you did! Follow us on 37
