                      Creative Arts Learning Online

The corona virus pandemic continues to affect us all in unimaginable ways. Most schools
are reopening with remote classes, or in a variety of limited hybrid formats. While some
businesses and arts organizations are finding ways to cautiously reopen, many are still
closed, including the city’s illustrious performing arts institutions. It is a precarious time.

Throughout the spring and summer our arts education colleagues have creatively pivoted
to bring arts experiences of every dimension imaginable online — so we can keep learning,
growing and staying connected.

In this special book, we offer a wide range of exciting online and virtual programs. Browse
through the activities available from Cleveland Arts Education Consortium members and
other sources. We know you’ll find intriguing programs along with innovative sites to
explore for students of all ages, PreK-Grade 12 youth to senior adult.

As was said recently with great verve, “Cleveland IS the arts.” We believe that.

VISUAL ART PROGRAMS
SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT! Art Smarts, Superhero Art: Small groups of children participate in art
projects while engaging in conversation about healthy peer relationships, coping techniques for stress and
communication skills. Emphasis is placed on the interpersonal dynamics of the group, problem solving
challenging art projects and affirming selves and one another. (Grades K-8)

Mixed Media Madness, Multicultural Art Explorers, Show Me A Story, Constructing a Zoo, Wild at HeART
Nature and Art: Youth take on a new project each week based on the theme and focus of the class. They are
encouraged to creatively build upon and discover their talents with engagement and encouragement from the
instructor and small group interaction. Supplies are sent ahead of the class. See the BSMA website for more
information. (Grades K-8)

“All In” Visual Art: These 30-minute classes focus on sensory experiences and the process of creating and use of
self-expression including words, line, color and texture. Each lesson has a curriculum guide outlining the
alignment with ODE ELA domains and assessments. (Grade: PreK)

Watercolor Painting for Senior Citizens: Seniors learn the basics of watercolor painting and basic elements of
design. Class follows Creative Aging principles and is focused on incremental learning and mastery.
Socialization and small group encouragement is key to the class and can be done with remote technology. An
exhibit is planned as a culminating activity. (Adults/Seniors)

MUSIC PROGRAMS
Group Lessons provide a basic knowledge of the instrument and its parts, music reading, rhythms, the structure of
music and fine motor skills. Children gain a sense of pride in their work learning to play together as well as by
themselves. (Group music making for on-line classes adapted based on availability of proper technology.) Singing
and dancing is often included to help internalize the beat and the tune.
Instruments for Group Lessons:
Keyboards: BSMA would be able to supply 10-12 keyboards that would need to be stored in a secure location.
Percussion: including bucket drumming
African drumming: dependent on the availability of djembes and/or congas
(Grades K-8)

Musical instruments from Around the World: Students will learn about the musical heritage of communities
from countries around the world. They will listen to selections from that tradition and then make a replica
instrument from that tradition. (Grades K-8)

Music & Movement Eurhythmics: Eurhythmics is a teaching philosophy that connects music, movement, mind,
and body. Although mainly used to teach music, Eurhythmics has wide-ranging applications and benefits
including reinforcing pre-math and pre-literacy skills. Each 30-45 minute lesson has a curriculum guide outlining
the alignment with ODE ELA domains and assessments. (Grade: PreK-K)

Music Bingo (for those no tech skills!): Participants are given bingo cards ahead of time and then call in VIA
PHONE or an online platform. A professional musician leads the game by playing a few bars of the favorite songs
of the group. Players guess the song and mark their cards. Often spontaneous singing ensues- and is encouraged!
(Adults/Seniors)

CREATIVE WRITING, THEATRE AND DANCE FOR CHILDREN

• Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage

Now in its 13th year, the Stop the Hate® contest is comprised of two components: Youth Speak Out Essay

Online Workshops: New this year, we’re launching two FREE online workshops as part of our Stop the Hate
program. This anti-bias learning tool teaches history, literacy, and the arts. Teachers can choose to offer their
classrooms either a songwriting or essay writing workshop at zero cost for middle and high schools, or home
school groups of ten or more, within Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Mahoning, Medina, Portage,
Stark, Summit, Trumbull, and Wayne counties.
These totally free workshops provide:
Teachers with ready-made online lessons plans taught by qualified instructors
Students with access to important history about Holocaust and Civil Rights
Schools with money for future anti-bias education plans

Digital Tours: Middle and high school educators can utilize our two most popular museum tours without stepping
foot in the museum: Stop the Hate & Lessons of the Holocaust are now online. We’ve created them to fit within
the context of an uncertain environment, giving educators total flexibility for how and when you use the material.
What do these tours explore?
How are power and influence used to spread hate?
What is legalized hate vs individualized hate?
Who are upstanders, bystanders, or perpetrators in any situation?

How do digital tours work? Object-based learning uses artifacts to discuss a moment in history. A photograph, a
letter, a piece of clothing – these everyday items tell us about what life was like in the past. Using the structure
“what we see, what we know, and what we wonder” students are invited to look at an object, learn how it was
used during the time when it was created, and consider what that means to us today. We’re studying history while
also learning about social responsibility, building empathy for others, and encouraging self-reflection. Students
can access tours individually at home or as a group in the classroom. Supporting activities are designed to be self-
directed, but can easily shift into small group work or become larger classroom discussions. Use the materials
how you want, when you want, with complete flexibility!

Virtual Music Therapy Programs from The Music Settlement
#1 Music and Literacy are programs tailored to the needs of each group’s participants. Using music, scholars
explore a new theme each week, while also reviewing key concepts from previous lessons. Books and
storytelling, playing of musical instruments, listening, simple composition and movement experiences capture
children’s imaginations while aiding in the development and strengthening of important literacy skills. Course
content is based on the Ohio English Language Arts standards for grades Pre-K through grade 3, depending on the
group make-up. Groups are best served if students are of a similar grade level, but this is not mandatory. Students
may be referred by classroom teachers. Each group is led by a Board-Certified Music Therapist. Students with
disabilities are welcome to be included.

#2 The Children in Harmony long-term residency (8 or 16 weeks) groups are inclusion groups designed to be
customized for each classroom/ grade level. (Call for details) Music therapy experiences and interventions include
chanting, playing instruments, movement, listening, composing/creating, discussion about music, etc. The music
therapist provides methods to address generalization and transfer of skills/responses demonstrated in music
therapy settings to other school settings, as well as consultation with appropriate faculty.
