SHOCK TREATMENT - cold water immersion WSNZ commissioned the University of Otago to investigate the contrast in initial responses to sudden water immersion in temper- ate (27°C) versus cold (10°C) water. The results indicated all participants were susceptible to cold water shock; that swimming capability is reduced when immersed in cold water, and breath holding upon immersion may reduce the reflex of gasping for oxygen and thus inhaling water.
