Big Data Analytics is
                                         happening Big Time… soon
A s the world gets smaller, data is getting bigger. There are lots of talk about
the Internet of Things, with devices and sensors collecting tons of data, all of
which are supposed to make life better and more efficient, be it in business or at
home. Even before IoT, companies have been collecting all kinds of data, even in
paper form. Hidden among all these data are valuable insights waiting to be
                                         discovered or left to waste.

The idea of business intelligence is not new. We churn out reports and charts with our
spreadsheets and database programs, and try to find correlations, trends, and any-
thing that is of strategic value. However, data today is coming from different sources
and formats: email, texts, unstructured formats and what-have-you. The volume is
also growing relentlessly. Can we analyse relationships across different types of data
in different locations? Where do we store these data and how quickly can we retrieve
them? What data is useful and what is not?

These are big questions that are tackled by Big Data Analytics (BDA). The workloads
are beyond the ability of the humble PC. With the shift towards public clouds, a lot of
storage and computing power are now available to the masses without requiring huge
capital outlay: they just pay a subscription fee.

Business and predictive insights can help your company manoeuvre to stay ahead of the
competition. If you do not use it, your competitors may.

Having experience with BDA is also helpful as you can leverage your knowledge to offer
this as a service to your clientele. This is one way to remain relevant – and profitable –
in an increasingly challenging and changing world.

Our main feature explores the state of Big Data Analytics and the opportunities that
                                         come with it.

PIKOM: average ICT salaries to grow 6.7% in 2017
T he National ICT Association of Malaysia
      (PIKOM) projected the average monthly
salary growth for 2017 to be above RM9,000,
a 6.7% increase over 2016 on the back of a
better-than-expected economic performance.
Due to the 5.6% GDP growth in 1Q17 year-on-
year (y-o-y) and recent developments, PIKOM
is also cautiously optimistic that the economy
will improve further: it revised its GDP growth
projection to 5% from 4% previously.

“During the first half of 2017, we witnessed
many ICT developments that will have a
significant impact on the growth and success
of the industry,” said PIKOM chairman Chin

Therefore, anyone who pays will still not be able to receive the decryption key.

Kaspersky Labs also noted the extremely poor payment pipeline and investigated how the
malware generated an installation ID to be used for encryption and decryption. Kaspersky
found that it was unlikely for the victims to be able to recover their files even if they had
paid the ransom. It concluded that NotPetya was possibly a disk wiper masquerading as a
ransomware.

The malware is spread using a combination of the SMB exploit EternalBlue as used by
WannaCryptor to enter the network and PsExec to spread within the network. This could
explain why the outbreak spread globally and rapidly even after previous outbreaks were
highlighted in the media and most vulnerabilities were (hopefully) patched. All it requires

ESET offers an advisory (http://support.eset.com/alert6488/) on preventing the NotPetya

security solution; to not use the same account/credentials for workstations and server

disable SMB1 when possible.
