Congratulations to Dr. Adam Gordon and Dr. Hildi Hagedorn, recipients of the 2020 HSR&D
Health System Impact Award! Among his many roles, Dr. Gordon is Co-Director of the
Coordinating Center of the Addiction Treatment Fellowship. This award honors HSR&D and
QUERI-funded research that has had a direct and important impact on clinical practice or
clinical policy within the VA Healthcare System- and that has been successfully translated
into VA’s policy or operations. A full description of their accomplishments can be found

The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) was signed into law in 2016, to
address many facets of the opioid epidemic, including prevention, treatment, recovery,
law enforcement, criminal justice reform, and overdose reversal. This report reviews
outcomes and metrics to determine progress toward the program's goals.

PCSS offers a SUD 101 Core Curriculum for healthcare providers. The 22 modules provide
an overview of EBPs in the prevention, identification, and treatment of substance use
disorders and co-occurring mental disorders. Each module is available at no cost and is
designated for interprofessional continuing education credits.

        Conference and Publication Opportunities
The 2nd NIH HEAL (Helping to End Addiction Long-term) Initiative Investigator Meeting will
be held virtually from May 17-19, 2021 from 10am to 5:30pm.

The National Academy of Medicine, Shatterproof, and the Dell Medical School at the
University of Texas at Austin will present the “Stigma of Addiction Summit” on June 10,
2021 from 11-5pm.

Research Society on Alcoholism 44th Annual Conference/ISBRA Congress will be hosted
virtually from June 19-23, 2021. Meeting registration is now available.

American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry Call for Abstracts is now open. Deadline for
Papers, Posters, and Workshops is July 16, 2021. The 32nd Annual Meeting and Scientific
Symposium will be held virtually from December 9-12, 2021.

The Research Society on Marijuana (RSMj) Annual Scientific Meeting will be held virtually
on July 23, 2021 from 12-5pm ET.

Addictive Behaviors has issued a Call for Papers for their Special Issue on The Alcohol
Hangover: Biobehavioral Correlates and Functional Consequences. Deadline is August 1,
2021.

                      Funding Announcements
Notice of Information: Establishment of a Standard THC Unit to be used in Research (NOT-
DA-21-049) NIDA: The purpose of this Notice is to inform research applicants of a new
requirement to measure and report results using a standard THC unit in
all applicable human subjects’ research, beginning May 7, 2021. A standard THC unit is
defined as any formulation of cannabis plant material or extract that contains 5 milligrams
of THC. This requirement will apply to applications proposing research on cannabis or its
main psychotropic constituent THC.

Notice of Special Interest: Public Policy Effects on Alcohol-, Cannabis-, Tobacco-, and Other
Drug-Related Behaviors and Outcomes (NOT-AA-21-028). NIAAA. This notice is intended to
support innovative research to examine policy effects on behaviors and outcomes
pertaining to alcohol and other drugs that may lead to meaningful changes in public
health. First Available Due Date: June 5, 2021.
