BETWEEN THE PAGES Plattsmouth Public Library, 401 Ave A, Plattsmouth, NE 68048 Phone 402-296-4154 Fax 402-296-4712 Volume 22 Issue 1 January 2022 Hot Off the Press! It’s hard to believe that it’s been four years since the library parcipated in the Library Innovaon Studio Project, from November 2017 to March 2018. A wide variety of makerspace equipment, including a 3D printer, CNC router, vinyl cu/er, heat press, embroidery machine, robocs, and more were provided. With the laser cu/er proving to be the most popular, the library raised funds and installed the laser cu/er in January 2019. When the Innovaon Studio Project concluded in November 2021, the equipment that travelled around the state was made available to libraries which had parcipated in the four-year project. Pla/smouth Public Library staff were thrilled when they were nofied that they would be receiving their first choice of equipment, the heat press and accompanying mug press! To their surprise, they also received about 18 bins of materials that could be used on the heat press and mug press, including hundreds of shirts for children and adults, aprons, cloth bags, mouse pads, glass les, aluminum signs, coasters, and much more. The library is now taking reservaons for people who want to go through the 20-30 minute training on the heat press and mug press. During training, you will be able to create your own design or use a sample design provided by the library. You can print one mug and one other item (shirt, mousepad, or any other material) for free. Beyond that, items cost anywhere from 25 cents to $4.

Page 5 Between the Pages January 2022 Benton Kinkead’s Story Part 2 – The Family in Plattsmouth By Harlan Seyfer Historian, Historic Downtown Plattsmouth Association On October 30 last year (2021), Benton Kinkead was buried with full honors in Pla/smouth’s Oak Hill Cemetery. In November, we described Benton Kinkead’s experiences in the Civil War. He exaggerated his age to enlist in the 77th Ohio Infantry, fought in the Ba/le of Shiloh, and was wounded and captured in Arkansas. Held prisoner, he was eventually released in an exchange of wounded POWs and was honorably discharged. The 1870 census found Benton living in Vinton County, Ohio, a bachelor and working as a house painter. That changed a year later, when he and Cynthia Ann Vest were married. They set up their home in the village of Zaleski, Ohio, populaon 690 souls in 1870, where Ralph, their first child, was born in 1873. During the summer of 1876, Benton travelled to Pla/smouth, perhaps on the recommendaon of John Vest, a distant relave of Cynthia, who was living a short distance across the Missouri River in Mills County. In the autumn, aOer finding a suitable home for his family, he sent for Cynthia and the kids. Daughter Laura had been born in Zaleski just that August, so it was probably in September that the Kinkeads were reunited. The 1880 census located the Kinkead family on north 11th Street in Pla/smouth. Also that year, their youngest child Marie/a – everyone called her E/a – was born. By 1882, Benton’s house painng business in growing Pla/smouth Ralph, Etta and Laura ca. 1882 was thriving, and he bought two lots on the southeast corner of 10th and Fulton Streets (Fulton is now 11th Courtesy Kathy Kinkead Avenue). The family would call this home for the next thirty years. Benton’s younger brother Selwin and his family joined Benton in Pla/smouth during 1883. The two brothers went into business together, according to their ad in the Plasmouth Daily Herald, as “painters & decorators, kalsomining [white washing], paper hanging and fine graining [smoothing rough surfaces].” Although never running for office, Benton was acve in local civic affairs. In the 1880s and ‘90s, he represented the Second Ward in Cass County and Pla/smouth Democrac party caucuses and served as Second Ward clerk and registrar in several elecons. When Post #45 of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was formed in Pla/smouth in early 1880, Benton was one of the first to join, if not a charter member. The GAR, an organizaon of Union veterans, was the precursor to the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. As an 1880 member, Benton may have a/ended Nebraska’s first reunion of GAR members in Central City that September, when over 15,000 Nebraska Union vets and their families gathered. Benton had one peculiar “hobby” (if you will) in that he wrote tesmonial le/ers, which were published, for example, in the Plasmouth Evening News: Benton Kinkead stated that in twenty-four hours aOer the first treatment [of Dr. Disbrow’s Connued on page 6.
Page 6 Between the Pages January 2022 Connued from page 5. treatment] he had no desire whatever for liquor or tobacco, both of which he had been using quite generously for years. He said he had tried several mes to quit drinking, but had failed each me. There seemed to be no queson in his mind but that he is cured. ... (However, let the record show that Benton’s family life and business success tesfy that he was never an accomplished imbiber.) And he wrote of Professor C. E. Blair’s Osteo-Magnec treatment (apparently a mild electric shock): During the past summer I was a/acked with a very severe case of sciac rheumasm. My suffering was beyond any language to describe … I had about given up in despair, when my friend persuaded me to try your Osteo-Magnec treatment. …in two weeks I was enrely cured. I took my last treatment in September, and I have been working at my trade (painter) almost constantly ever since … As me wore on, the children grew into adulthood and began to go their separate ways. Ralph (b. 1873) dropped out of Ralph ca. 1892; E/a PHS Graduaon in 1898; Schoolteacher Laura ca. 1910 Courtesy Kathy Kinkead Pla/smouth High School and took a job as a driver for the local express companies. Perhaps following the lead of his father, he a/empted to enter polics in 1895 by seeking the nominaon for County Assessor – but unsuccessfully. Someme aOer that, Ralph moved to Nebraska City where he went to work for Fred Kuwitzky, a successful tailor. In 1903, he moved back to Pla/smouth, where he set up his own tailoring business. In 1894, Laura (b. 1876) was among the five girls who made up the Pla/smouth High School graduang class. The following year, she returned to Pla/smouth as a teacher in the Central Building on Main Street. Laura was steadily promoted unl 1904, when she resigned to accept a teaching posion in Lincoln. She would remain with the Lincoln School System unl 1910. The Kinkeads’ youngest, Marie/a (b. 1880) was an 1898 Pla/smouth High School graduate. A well-liked girl, everyone called her E/a. In 1905, she moved to Stanton, Nebraska, where she joined a law firm as a stenographer and typist. “The young lady comes to Stanton with splendid recommendaons and is a competent stenographer,” the Stanton newspaper enthused. E/a kept in touch with her family; both the Stanton and Pla/smouth newspapers recorded frequent family visits in both direcons. E/a had a talent as an arst, and it was this interest in art – and awards received at county and state exhibions – that encouraged her to enroll in the Art Instute of Chicago for two years beginning in 1908. Benton and Cynthia Kinkead were, no doubt, proud of the family they raised in Pla/smouth. In a future arcle, we will tell of the family tragedy in 1910 and its aOermath.
