Aims Primarily this degree aims to provide an educational and vocational pathway for students to pursue the knowledge, skills and attributes identified as those that support creativity and innovation in the development of professional practice aligned with the 21st century design and arts environment Consultation with relevant stakeholders established that a qualification of this nature is attractive to school leavers, current students in related undergraduate programmes, professionals employed in associated disciplines and potential employers. Recommendations arising from consultation underpin the following articulation of the degree’s purpose and aims. The learner group, identified through consultation during the development of this qualification, is people interested in pursuing an exciting and challenging study pathway in order to develop the personal attributes and the skills required to make a contribution to design and arts related industries. Undergraduate students are keen to follow an educational pathway that supports their passion for creative expression, advances their career aspirations, adds mana to their curriculum vitae, builds their confidence and results in a portfolio of work that they are proud to exhibit or present in a range of design and arts related contexts. The Whanganui region is known for its creativity. This location exhibits a unique point of difference from other regional parts of New Zealand and the world. Strong Iwi connections are an outstanding feature of the environment. Therefore, a primary objective of this degree is to ensure that design and arts education remains meaningfully local and that local course content addresses tikanga within the context of the teaching and learning environment. This objective is guided and monitored by the Whanganui School of Design, Iwi Partnership Group (IPG) who support the delivery of Tikanga Maori through the identification of appropriate members of Iwi to deliver specialist cultural content. The content, structure and delivery of the degree are intended to provide students with the chance to work in a similar environment to that of a professional artist or designer while building theoretical and contextual knowledge. The degree is constructed around studio-based work where students specialise in their own area of interest. The studio work is intended to result in the students themselves becoming increasingly inventive, skillful and knowledgeable as they explore the critical foundations of design and arts both in a general sense and relative to their chosen specialisation. The lecturers are practicing artists, designers, educators and researchers who are able to tap into student creativity. Their commitment to student learning, combined with the content and structure of the degree, reflects an important aim of the programme which is to promote inspiration, creativity and innovation. Importantly, faculty members are committed to offering individualised instruction, academic direction and mentoring. The development of critical evaluative skills and visual communication abilities are an intended outcome of this qualification. Towards this end, the allocation of studio practice hours and relevant assessment methods mean that students get many opportunities to discuss and critique their own work (and that of others) with their lecturers and peers. Local artists, exhibitors, designers and curators complement these processes by taking part in studio-related critique and working with students to give an external perspective. The examining and judging mode in the learning environment aims to emphasise critical thinking relative to design and arts to strongly encourage work that examines and re-imagines context, material form and conceptual approach. ‘Hands on making’ experiences are an integral aspect of the degree. These opportunities are provided for the students through applied learning sessions in UCOL studios and they are reinforced by an internship in the third year. In this way, the programme seeks to ensure students develop a keen sense Faculty of Humanities and Business - Student Handbook 2021 MA4379 Bachelor of Design and Arts Level 7 16
of their target market or audience and to consider how they will reach, or even create, that market or audience. It is intended to facilitate the exposure of student work to a broader market or audience, whether that is to prospective employers, the art and design community, and industry stakeholders or to museums, galleries, or other public venues, specific to the particular project. Ultimately, the aim of the programme is to broaden the visual, intellectual and aesthetic abilities of students in the pursuit of their passion and their careers. The Bachelor of Design and Arts (with a major in Design Media, Visual Arts or Textiles/Fashion Design) intends to offer UCOL students productive studio facilities; close working relationships with faculty, local artists, designers and stakeholders; and a curriculum that emphasises the artistic richness of Whanganui’s broader creative and cultural community. Programme Assessment Grading Systems and Assessment Methodology The achievement-based assessment used in this programme provides a system to measure student performance against specific knowledge, behaviour and skills-based criteria considered essential for design and arts without limiting the range of work produced. Assessment may be used for both formative and summative purposes. Students are introduced to the assessment methodology during the programme orientation. The Student Handbook for the programme contains detailed information regarding assessment requirements. Underpinning assessment practices in this programme is the core belief that assessment should not only assess the level of achievement but should also provide on-going feedback that informs practice and improves performance. Both formative and summative assessment may be used during each course. Assessment in the Bachelor of Design and Arts, (with a major in Design Media, Visual Arts or Textiles/Fashion Design), Level 7 is achievement-based. All summative assessment schedules and details will be provided to students within 14 days of programme commencement. Formative assessment is used throughout the programme to monitor students’ progress and as a basis for feedback to students on their progress. The grading scale used in this degree is: A (+/-) Pass B (+/-) Pass C (+/ ) Pass D Fail E Fail F Ungraded Fail (no assessment undertaken) DNC Did not complete both all compulsory assessments for a course and CAR (grade) (AEG) Aegrotat Pass CR Specified or Unspecified or Cross Credit W Withdrawn R Restricted Pass CO Conceded Pass CP Conditional Pass The following percentages for each grade shall be used: A+ 85 – 100 A 80 – 84 A- 75 – 79 B+ 70 – 74 B 65 – 69 B- 60 – 64 C+ 55 – 59 C 50 – 54 D 40 – 49 E 0– 39 F Ungraded Fail (no assessment undertaken) Faculty of Humanities and Business - Student Handbook 2021 MA4379 Bachelor of Design and Arts Level 7 21
Assessment in Te Reo Māori UCOL endorses the rights of its students to use Te Reo Māori in assessments. Assessments may be conducted in Te Reo Māori, provided the conditions outlined in the Te Reo Procedure are able to be met (refer to Assessment and Moderation Policy). Students, fluent in Te Reo Māori, who wish to present all or part of their assessed work in Te Reo Māori should notify their lecturer and the Programme Leader of this at the beginning of their programme, refer to Assessment in Te Reo Māori Procedure Schedule of Assessment A schedule of assessments will be provided to you in your first class or is available from your Lecturer in the form of a course outline. Conduct During Assessments During your study, you are expected to observe and comply with the Academic Statute and all programme regulations. Plagiarism or cheating is not tolerated. Academic dishonesty includes: Copying from or inappropriate communicating with another person during an exam or assessment Possessing any unauthorised material during an exam or assessment Submitting any work for assessment that is not your own and whose author has not been acknowledged Copying another’s work Collaborating with others in the preparation of material, except where this is an assessment requirement Resubmitting work without prior written approval of the lecturer Turnitin, or a similar programme, may be used to determine whether you have committed academic dishonesty. See Conduct of Examinations and Assessments Procedure. Part VIII of the Academic Statute outlines the disciplinary proceedings that apply should you breach these rules. Extensions Extensions for an assessment can only be granted prior to the assessment due date in exceptional circumstances. These circumstances may include: Sickness – in which case a medical certificate must be presented to the lecturer. Bereavement – in which case the lecturer must be informed as soon as possible. Extenuating circumstances – these circumstances must be explained to the lecturer and proof may be required. An application for an extension must be submitted to your lecturer in writing using the Appendix 2 – Request for Extension form at the back of this handbook. It can also be made in electronic form via email which must include all the information required by the form. You will receive notification of the outcome once your lecturer has reached a decision. Extensions will be for seven (7) days only unless stated otherwise. Where an extension has been granted, and the extension deadline has been met, no penalties will apply. Your assessment will be marked and feedback provided in the same way as if the assessment was submitted on the original date and time. Faculty of Humanities and Business - Student Handbook 2021 MA4379 Bachelor of Design and Arts Level 7 22
Penalties for Late Submissions The following conditions apply to all late submissions of assessments that do not have an approved extension: All assessment work received after the due date and time, and not subject to a lecturer- approved extension, will attract a penalty. The penalty for late submission is the deduction of 10% of the mark achieved for each day beyond the due date for submission. The penalty is applied for a maximum of five (5) days. An assessment received after one week from the due date for submission will be returned unmarked and a zero (0) grade will be entered. No late submissions may be accepted after marked assessments have been returned to students, unless it can be determined that there will be no advantage to the student submitting the late assessment or disadvantage to students who have submitted the work on time. Reconsideration of Results Any assessment may be reconsidered if a student believes that a particular outcome for an assessment is unreasonable or has been incorrectly assessed. Within five working days of the return of the assessment, the student must return the script or other work to the lecturer responsible for the course with a written request for reconsideration. This request must specify the parts of the assessment that are to be reconsidered and give reasons why reconsideration is sought. A Request for Reconsideration of Result form is provided in the student handbook. Students must be informed that, as a result of the reconsideration of assessment, their result may be unchanged, raised or lowered (refer to the UCOL Academic Statute). The reconsidered result will be recorded as the final result. Students still have the right to appeal this result in accordance with the Academic Statute. Resubmits and Resits An application for a resubmit or resit must be submitted to your lecturer in writing using the Appendix 4 – Request for Resubmit/Resit form at the back of this handbook. It can also be made in electronic form via email which must include all the information required by the form. You may be charged a fee for this process. Students must attend all scheduled assessments. In the event of a student being unable to attend an assessment, a medical (or comparable) certificate is required. Students who do not attend the scheduled assessment time and who do not offer such a certificate will be deemed to have voluntarily missed the assessment. Generally, this will mean that these students will have made themselves ineligible for a resit opportunity. A resit is an opportunity for a second attempt for a successful result at an assessment task (whether submitted assignment work or a theory test). No more than one resit opportunity will be available for each course. Resit opportunities must be approved by the Executive Dean. Any resulting grade from a resit will not exceed the minimum pass mark (C) for that assessment, i.e., an A or B grade (or an associated plus/minus) cannot be obtained from successful completion of an achievement-based resit. Faculty of Humanities and Business - Student Handbook 2021 MA4379 Bachelor of Design and Arts Level 7 23
Any resit must be successfully completed before the end of the calendar year if the student is to complete pre-requisite requirements prior to the next academic year or to receive their degree in the following graduation ceremony. Special Passes If through illness, accident, bereavement or other exceptional circumstances beyond your control, you are unable to complete an assessment or programme, you can apply for a Special Pass. The four types of Special Passes are: Aegrotat Pass: awarded when you are unable to present work for assessment at the time it is due, you are unable to attend a test or examination, or your performance is seriously impaired in a test or examination. Conceded Pass: awarded when you have otherwise reached an acceptable standard in the programme but have narrowly failed one course, thus affecting your ability to complete the qualification. Conditional Pass: awarded when you have marginally failed to meet the required academic standard but in all other aspects have demonstrated an ability to meet it. Restricted Pass: awarded when you have marginally failed to meet the required academic standard for the course and, if awarded, does not qualify you to enrol in a subsequent course/programme for which a pass in the original course is a pre-requisite. If you are interested in requesting a Special Pass, contact your lecturer. Programme curriculum regulations and other conditions may apply. Academic Appeals The academic appeals process is outlined in Part IX of the Academic Statute. Inability to Meet Programme Requirements Under certain circumstances, an individual study contract may be drawn up to encourage you to meet programme requirements. Any failure to meet this contract may result in you being asked to leave the programme. If you have a serious health problem or other personal circumstances that impact on your ability to meet programme requirements, please inform your Lecturer. Remember, if you are having difficulties with your programme there are ways UCOL can help you. If you do decide to withdraw, you must complete a Change of Circumstances Form. These can be obtained from the Information Centre. Faculty of Humanities and Business - Student Handbook 2021 MA4379 Bachelor of Design and Arts Level 7 24
