B.C. BC Angus News April 2020 | Volume 6 - Edition Seventy Three B.C. Angus Commercial Breeder of the Year Ilnicki Family from Riske Creek, BC. The Commercial Breeder of the Year Award is given to a breeder who has demonstrated loyalty to the Angus breed in BC and is engaged with our Angus fraternity and utilizes Angus genetics. The BC Angus Association Board of Directors is excited to announce that our inaugural Commercial Breeder of the Year is the Ilnicki Family from Riske Creek, BC. Ken and Deb Ilnicki run River Ranch; a family owned and operated ranch located in Riske Creek B.C. The Ilnicki’s have been breeding Angus genetics for over 35 years. Ken’s parents Tom and Donna-Rae began ranching in 1974, both descendants of farm and ranch families, making Ken a third-generation cattle producer. Although in the early years, the family business was logging, the purchase of the ranch complimented their way of life. Ken worked alongside his father in logging, establishing his own successful business. Ken and Deb raised their family on the ranch then moved to nearby Williams Lake in 2001, as work and education demands of raising five children grew. They returned frequently to help with branding and haying. The couple was thrilled to transition to include ranching once again when Ken’s parents chose to retire in 2015. Today, the ranch runs 1,200 head of black & red Angus influenced cattle. Ken & Deb maintain the production of this premium quality breed as they consider the characteristics to be hearty and productive. While taking ownership of the ranch, they purchased additional property, expanding the grazing and feed growing capability of the operation. Their goal is to provide sustainable agriculture to ensure that the land is improved for future generations. Their children and grandchildren live and work nearby returning often to help with the branding and haying. The tradition continues. Ken is an active participant in the Riske Creek Stockman’s Association and currently serves on the BC Cattleman’s Environmental Stewardship Committee. Edited and Published by the B.C. CAA Office Closure Alert The Canadian Angus Association has made the decision to close our offices to visitors in an attempt to reduce the impacts of COVID-19. We are committed to maintaining our service and business operations as close to normal function as possible. Our office will remain open as we perform our day-to- day operations adhering to all current health protocols as recommended by Alberta Health Services, however, to assure the safety of our staff, if you need our service, we ask that you contact us via email or telephone rather than an office visit at this time. A drop box will be placed outside our doors during regular business hours so that work can be dropped off by those who are unable to send via email, courier or Canada Post. A staff member will collect the work and sanitize it before entering it into the work queue for processing. If you require one-on-one assistance, please call our office. If you are not able to reach a staff member immediately, leave a message so that we can call you back as the number of requests for one-on-one assistance is higher than usual and we are spending significant amounts of time on the phone supporting our members. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we all work through this together. Our revised operations will not affect our ability to work on your behalf. Along with other industry stakeholders, we are dedicated to maintaining business continuity that includes live cattle trade both within Canada and with our American customers during the COVID-19 outbreak. The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association has created a dedicated section on their website with information about COVID-19 specific to the beef industry: https://www.cattle.ca/cca-resources/covid-19/ TOLL FREE 1.877.553.3373 | PRAIRIECOASTEQUIPMENT.COM BC Angus News | Page 4 April 2020 | Volume 6 - Edition Seventy Three
B.C. Junior Angus Report Sarah MacDonald, BCJAA President and CJAA Director Hello everybody! I hope this article finds you all in good spirits! Calves are on the ground, bulls are sold, and the grass is, hopefully, greening up! I have just recently completed my first year in Crop Technology at Lakeland College and have returned home to BC, although a little earlier than planned! The Canadian Junior Angus Association hosted their annual GOAL Conference from February 15-17 in Calgary, AB. Over 60 Angus enthusiasts from across Canada, and 3 American guests, met in Calgary for three days to listen to speakers and learn about the cattle industry. Some of the topics included marketing, mental health in agriculture, genomics and DNA, careers in agriculture, and a meat cutting demonstration from Canada Beef! BC saw 17 juniors travel to Calgary to take part in the weekend’s events! Despite a few travel ‘hiccups’ everybody made it and had a fantastic time! The Canadian Angus Foundation Legacy Scholarship Competition also happened at GOAL Conference. This year, two of the five finalists were from BC. Part of the competition is a panel discussion where applicants answer questions around the Canadian Angus Association, political effects on agriculture, and the beef industry. All five finalists did a fantastic job, with Alana Higgins winning second place and myself, Sarah MacDonald, receiving runner up. CJAA Showdown will be July 23-25 in Brandon, MB. It is fast approaching, as is several deadlines. The Canadian Angus Foundation graciously offers bursaries to juniors to help offset the cost of travel. I highly encourage BC juniors to take advantage of this opportunity, but hurry as the deadline is May 25! Showdown registration is due June 1 and registration forms can be found at juniors.cdnangus.ca. Follow the Canadian Junior Angus Association on Instagram for more updates. For our graduating juniors, don’t forget that the CJAA offers several scholarships! The BC Junior Angus Association has been hard at work preparing two field days, Southern Experience on May 23 and Northern Experience on June 10. Many events in our industry have been cancelled or continued in a different fashion due to covid-19. At this point in time the events have not been cancelled but BCJAA will continue to evaluate the situation as the events near. Follow the BC Junior Angus Association on Instagram and Facebook for regular updates. Finally, the Canadian Beef Industry Conference is right out our back door this year, in Penticton, BC. Happening August 11-13, this is a great opportunity to network, learn about innovation in the cattle industry and visit a beautiful corner of our province! I hope that that Covid-19 situation will subside and allow for us to meet at an event some time throughout the summer. As always, if you have any questions feel free to contact me at 250-444-9317 or sdmacdonald01@ gmail.com and I will be more than happy to help! Enjoy some spring weather and I will see you all soon! Best regards, Sarah MacDonald, BCJAA President and CJAA Director BC Angus News | Page 5 April 2020 | Volume 6 - Edition Seventy Three

The beef industry and Angus community have shown great resolve through these times, and I thank everyone involved in making 2020 bull sales and business continue through these difficult times. Due to the unknown circumstances that we face ahead over the next few months and all the planning that goes into having a successful convention, the Canadian Angus Association has made the difficult but necessary decision to postpone our National Convention 2020 in Moncton, New Brunswick until 2022. Our National Convention 2021 will proceed in Saskatchewan as originally planned at this time. An announcement about the specific location will be made at a later date. We still look forward to engaging with our members and industry colleagues and are exploring options to host our AGM under a different platform in 2020. As details get confirmed, they will be shared. Please check back to our National Convention webpage (https://cdnangus.ca/activities-and-services/national-convention) and watch our social media channels and Angus Advisor newsletter for more information. President’s Report By Jim Moon, BCAA President Hello Fellow Angus Breeders and Commercial Cattle Producers, Spring has been slow coming and those calving in late March through April have been busy keeping calves warm and alive. Most producers are doing assessments of the new calf crop and potentially seeing the outputs of their genetics from last spring actually meeting or exceeding their expectations. Bull Sale season is in full swing… or at least in a somewhat altered state of the same. Some uncertainty to be sure among the bull producers in what to do in order to move forward with numerous restrictions placed on them through Health Ministries regarding COVID-19. Somewhat different holding an auction when attendance is minimal and offsite, online or phone bidding is vital to maintain any success for the sale. The good news is most of the technology previously existed and now just needs to be utilized. There is a lot of information in regards to calving cows, cattle reproduction, efficiency of cattle, and a host of other topics related to cow/calf operation available on the web. This information can be used as part of a tool box of information as far as bull selection for your herd. So as not to get caught up in particular tactics when purchasing a bull, one must evaluate their own cattle first. One bit of information to consider is the ratio of a new born calf to the mother’s weight, which should be 8%. In that, a 1,300 lb. cow would be at 104 lb. for the calf. As producers get paid by the pound for their crop, too small is too small and not to mention the pelvic size of any females that may not be retained by using the small light birth weight bulls. Some of you are beginning seeding others still have snow on the ground. One thing that is the same for all of us, is that COVID-19 has invaded all our lives, and has changed some of our thinking likely forever. Likely the virus will effect cattle prices in the months, and maybe years to come. It is certain during this time however, that farmers and ranchers are essential to the global value-chain and the public seems to realize this now more than ever. Wishing you all a productive and safe season, stay healthy and take care of each other. Respectfully Submitted, Jim Moon BC Angus News | Page 15 April 2020 | Volume 6 - Edition Seventy Three
