AUGUSTANA BASEBALL 2018 National Championship The 2018 Augustana baseball season was one for the history books. The Vikings dominated every facet of the game, shattered records, and sent players to professional levels in a season that culminated in a National Championship. The 40-8 Vikings charged into the NSIC Tournament led by First Team All-NSIC players Jacob Blank, Sam Baier, and Riley Johnson. Blank wound up finishing the year with a perfect 9-0 record with 100 strikeouts and a 1.98 ERA. Baier brought the power with eight homers and 56 runs batted in while Johnson was on an on-base machine with a .374 batting average, 72 runs scored and 34 stolen bases. Baier and Johnson were also awarded NSIC Gold Gloves for shortstop and center field, respec- tively. All-NSIC second-teamers, Tyler Mitzel, David Flattery, Jordan Barth, and Zach Reeg also fueled the Vikings postseason run with impressive stats of their own. Mitzel went 12-0 on the year and Barth posted an impressive stat line of .362 BA, seven Homers, and 61 RBI’s. Augustana dominated Wayne State in game one of the tournament behind Jacob Blank’s eight shutout innings. The Vikings smashed three doubles and two homers in the 10-0 rout. Although the Vikings trailed 2-0 early against St. Cloud State in game two, Barth and Ryan Nickel hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the second and once Mitzel settled in, Augustana cruised to a 5-2 victory that set the school record for wins (42). Highlighted by a six-run fourth inning, the Vikings advanced to the NSIC title game after defeating Concordia St. Paul 8-4 in game three of the tournament. Game four was a nail-biter, but similar in fashion with a big inning in game three, the Vikings tallied a six-run fourth before Reeg earned a four-out save to give Augustana a 10-9 victory. The win gave Augustana its first NSIC Tournament Championship since 2014 as the Vikings started their postseason run 4-0. The Vikings proved that no stage was too big for them at the Central Regional. In five games Augustana trailed in just five innings, en route to a 4-1 record and a regional championship that sent the Vikings to the Division II College World Series. After Mitzel improved to 10-0 on the mound in a 9-4 win against Pittsburgh State in game one, the Augustana baseball team found itself in the most pivotal point of the tournament in game two. Tied 2-2 with Emporia State in the top of the ninth inning, Baier hit a leadoff double and then stole third. After a walk, Augustana played some small ball when Lucas Wylie dropped down a bunt that Emporia State could not field. After the bunt, an error, and a sacrifice fly, the Vikings went into the bottom of the ninth with a 4-2 lead, which was plenty for Reeg to lock down the win. Reeg recorded a save in the very next game against Central Missouri before the Vikings would drop their first, and only, game of the postseason to host Southern Arkansas in the regional championship series. Augustana avenged the loss to Southern Arkansas in the Central Regional Championship deciding game with a 6-3 win. The Vikings scored five times in the first two innings and cruised the rest of the way, all the way to the College World Series. Pitching was the name of the game for the Vikings at the World Series. Mitzel won his 11th and 12th games of the season in games one and three of the World Series. The senior pitched all nine innings and only allowed two runs in game one and pitched seven while allowing two again in game three. The fifth-seeded Vikings knocked off number one seed Florida Southern in game two of the World Series. After jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings, Augustana clung to a 6-5 win thanks to Reeg’s five-out save. After incredible pitching performances all season long, the stage was set for the most impressive one of the season. Blank took the mound against Columbus State in the national championship game. After RBI singles by Michael Svozil and Lucas Barry, JT Mix delivered an RBI single of his own in the top of the sixth to give the Vikings a 3-2 lead. That score would prove to be the final as Blank pitched a complete game gem, allowing only two runs on four hits with 12 strikeouts. Blank struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to give Augustana baseball its first national title. Mitzel was named the World Series MVP. After all the confetti and celebrations, the Augustana baseball team had a season to truly be proud of. The 2018 squad set the school record for most wins (52), fewest losses (9), stolen bases (170), and nearly every pitching and defensive stat. Jacob Blank, Zach Reeg, Tyler Mitzel, Riley Johnson, Lucas Wylie, and Sam Baier earned All-Region honors with Blank, Reeg, and Wylie being named All-Americans shortly after.

AUGUSTANA BASEBALL On June 4, 1992, Augustana College Baseball received an estate gift from Maurus and Anna Ronken. With this gift, the development of Ronken Field began. Located just west of the Elmen Center, Ronken field is a picturesque setting for college baseball. Dick Ronken was the head baseball coach at Augustana and was instrumental in the building of the “new” field, which is still in the same location. As a result of the Ronkens’ generosity, the Augustana baseball program made several key upgrades to Ronken Field. In 2010, the team completed the construction of a new 7-foot wooden fence in the outfield. The fence is made from Cedartone treated wood, and it took 1,400 planks and many hours of work to complete the structure. In 2006, Lee “Goldy” Goldammer began to throw batting practice to the Augustana baseball program. In succes- sive years, Goldy began to travel with the team and have a significant presence within the baseball program. As he became more involved with Augustana baseball, he became interested in helping to improve the facilities for student-athletes. In October of 2011, Goldammer gave an initial gift of family land, which translated into a significant donation to the Augustana baseball program. This gift kicked off a large fundraising campaign known as “Step up to the Plate.” The campaign was set up to make improvements to the facility one step at a time. The first project was the installation of the artificial turf infield in the summer of 2012. In June of 2012, Augustana submitted a grant proposal to the Baseball Tomorrow Fund, through Major League Base- ball. After going through the process, the Baseball Tomorrow Fund awarded Augustana College $84,700 towards the installation of field lighting. As the projects were completed, Ronken Field has become one of the best baseball facili- ties in all of Division II. The field now features a turf infield, grandstand with chairback seats, bleachers and a state-of- the-art press box and luxury suite.
AUGUSTANA BASEBALL The Sanford FIELDHOUSE is one of the latest amenities available to Augustana student-athletes. Viking athletic teams use this facility for various team workouts through- out the school year. The Sanford FIELDHOUSE is the pre- mier indoor sports facility for local, regional and national athletic training, soccer, baseball, softball, football, co-ed sports leagues and POWER fitness programs. Athletes enjoy 62,000 square feet of professional grade Field Turf®, state-of-the-art training facilities, full amenity locker rooms – all designed to make sports an integral part of staying healthy. Sanford FIELDHOUSE is also home to Sanford POWER Athletic Enhancement Program, Sanford Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation, Sanford Sports Medicine Out- reach (Athletic Training Program) and the future home of the National Institute for Athletic Health & Performance. Augustana baseball utilizes the large weight room at the FIELDHOUSE, including Sanford Power strength and condi- tioning trainers during the off-season.
