Extensive lawns and avenues are framed by impressive, clipped yew hedges and many fine trees. Take the short transfer to a local country pub for dinner – a chance to enjoy some fine local produce in a sophisticated atmosphere. DAY 3: After breakfast, join your guide and transfer to Hush Heath Winery, a hidden gem in the wine garden of England. The estate produces one of England’s most iconic and exclusive sparkling wines using the traditional method. Built in 1503, Hush Heath Manor initially served as a pair of wealthy weavers’ cottages. By the time the Balfour-Lynn family purchased it in the 1980s, it required extensive restoration. The following four years entailed a full restitution of the roof, gardens and interior period features. Here, the label, Balfour 1503, was born. The names Balfour 1503 Classic Cuvee and Balfour 1503 Rosé relate back to the wines’ provenance and ties them into the rich heritage of the estate. Today, the hillside on which Hush Heath Manor sits overlooks the vineyards, apple orchards and winery and is at the heart of Hush Heath Estate. Enjoy a bespoke private tour with your own dedicated guide and visit the state-of-the-art winery to discover how they make their award-winning still and sparkling wines. Situated within the ruins of a great Elizabethan house, framed by the rich Kentish landscape of woods, farmland, lakes and streams, the famous garden with romantic pink brick tower is the result of creative tension between the formal design of Harold Nicolson and the abundant planting of his wife, Vita Sackville-West. The layers of color, intimacy of different garden rooms and rich, herbaceous borders are the epitome of an English garden and provide an ever-changing picture throughout the seasons. An ancient site, its name in Saxon means “clearing in the woods.” The evolving history of the gardens and the remains of the castle are a true treat to see. Soak up the well-presented exhibition that tells you the castle’s involvement during the past from the Napoleonic wars right through to the popular hop picking era. The castle itself was developed around the surviving parts of an Elizabethan mansion with a central red-brick prospect tower, which still survives today. The rooms inside these impressive turrets are intimate and romantic in atmosphere and provide enchanting libraries as well as the study, where Vita worked on her famous books. Sit back and relax as you’re treated like royalty once more and enjoy a farewell dinner with your fellow guests. ST. MARY’S, ISLES OF SCILLY, ENGLAND, UK SCI301 ARCHAEOLOGICAL WALK JUNE 20, 2022 | 9:15 AM – 11:45 AM 2.5 HOURS $79pp Surrounded by ocean 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly are a place like no other. Isolated and remote, they are home to a remarkable range of historic sites, many dating as far back as the Bronze Age. Beginning in the busy little harbor on St. Mary’s, the largest of the islands, walk through the tiny capital, Hugh Town, following the scenic coastal path as it wraps around the northwest side of the island. Passing pretty Porthmellon Beach, with its grassy dunes and white sands, you’ll head up a brief incline to Harry’s Walls, an unfinished mid-16th-century fort. Continuing inland along the Lower Moors nature trail, you can admire the lush subtropical vegetation and keep your eyes open for a myriad of bird life that call this wetland home. Take in the remains of 13th-century Ennor Castle, Scilly’s only medieval castle, before arriving in the Old Town, which also dates to medieval times. It’s thought to be the oldest settlement on St. Mary’s. Stroll around the beautiful, sheltered bay, admiring the clear, azure waters before visiting the small, 12th-century church and cemetery. It is here where former British Prime Minister Harold Wilson is buried in an unassuming and secluded grave. SCI302 TRESCO ABBEY GARDENS JUNE 20, 2022 | 1:45 PM – 5:15 PM 3.5 HOURS $99pp Tender ashore to Scilly’s second-largest island, Tresco, and be met by a local guide before walking to the world-class Tresco Abbey gardens for a guided tour. This incredible, subtropical botanical paradise was planted in the ruins of a Benedictine priory under the direction of Augustus Smith. A wealthy merchant banker, Smith purchased the island from the Duchy of Cornwall in the mid-1830s and began working on the gardens almost immediately in 1834. Today, the gardens are home to an impressive collection of 20,000 plant species heralding from as far as New Zealand, South America and South Africa. The mild climate in Scilly combined with high numbers of sunshine hours has allowed plants to flourish here when they would not likely survive anywhere else in the world. A walled enclosure around the priory ruins acts as a windbreak, providing shelter from the force of the Atlantic weather during the winter months when more than 300 plants are in flower. These magnificent gardens lure visitors from around the globe, each eager to explore this perennial Kew, where red squirrels, one of Britain’s most treasured yet most endangered species, dart about in the trees alongside the humble bee, both species thriving, safe in this garden sanctuary. Following an introduction, stroll the gardens at your leisure to uncover the many treasures, including the magnificent Valhalla figurehead collection. These ship-wrecked figureheads and decorative carvings, most dating from 19th-century merchant sailing vessels and steamships, met their demise off Scilly’s shores. Conclude your visit with a delightful cream tea before heading back to the pier. SCI303 WILDLIFE CRUISE & ST. MARTIN’S VINEYARD TOUR JUNE 20, 2022 | 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM 4.5 HOURS $119pp Located 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly are a beguiling cluster of low-lying islands, only five of which are inhabited by a total of just 2,200 residents. With their raw, rugged edges, these isles are a haven for wildlife and keen eyes may spot gannets, cormorants, shearwaters and the friendly Atlantic grey seals, some of the rarest seals in the world. From mid-April, the puffins return to breed and the Isles of Scilly are one of only a handful of sites in the UK where puffin spotting is possible. Learn more about this popular seabird and discover why this fantastic natural habit is so important. Your cruise ends on St. Martin’s, a quiet island with some of the finest beaches in the world, where iridescent seas lap over powder-white sand. Offering spectacular views and life’s simple pleasures, St. Martin’s rich, natural beauty has attracted an enterprising bunch of residents, each making the most of where they live. One such thriving local business is St. Martin’s Vineyard, the UK’s most southwesterly vineyard set on the site of a former flower farm. Established as a vineyard in 1996, the first vines to be trialed were white varieties, Reichensteiner and Madeleine Angevine, with the first vintage in 2000 yielding just 120 bottles. Today, the vineyard produces five varieties – three white, one rosé and one red – and is a fine example of a working vineyard in action. The current owners moved to the island in early 2020 to continue the traditional management of the vineyard while increasing focus on biodiversity and sustainability, including a move toward organic production. Enjoy a tour of the vineyard and sample the splendid wines accompanied with delicious Cornish cheeses. Next, head to Highertown along the island’s one and only concrete road. Highertown is home to a charming gallery showcasing local artists, a flower farm and a thriving artisanal bakery. After free time to browse at your leisure, it will then be time to walk back to the pier for the boat transfer back to the ship. In 1943, Brendan O’Regan opened a restaurant and coffee shop in the Foynes terminal building. It was in this restaurant in 1943 that Chef Joe Sheridan created what is now known as an Irish coffee, a creamy, hot coffee blended with Irish whiskey. Sit back and enjoy a demonstration of how this delightful beverage is made and get an opportunity to taste this delicious drink. In addition, and more recently in 2016, the invention of Irish peat wine was created by two Limerick locals. Enjoy an introduction of the process to how this peat wine is made and sample some.
