MLN302 HISTORIC FORTRESS EXPLORATION MAY 2, 2022 | 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM 3 HOURS $149pp Enjoy a guided walk through the fortified enclosure known as The Citadel. The Citadel, or “El Pueblo” as the local Melillans know it, is a 15th-century defensive construct built on the rock that served as a base for the old town of Rusadir of Phoenician and Roman times. This monumental city is composed of four areas separated by a moat. The first three advance into the sea while the fourth goes into the continent. You will have a chance to visit each area, including a group of caves used as shelter placed under the citadel known as Conventico Caves. Witness a magnificent example of Spanish architecture and an ancient civil engineering work with the medieval cisterns. NOTE: There are steps throughout the route. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. To Book Your Atlas Ashore Land Programs, Contact Our Voyage Specialists at 1.844.44.ATLAS (28527) or LandPrograms@AtlasOceanVoyages.com
FORMENTERA, BALEARICS, SPAIN FMT301 FORMENTERA BONITA MAY 4, 2022 | 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM 3.5 HOURS $249pp Your first destination is going to be the furthest and highest point on the island, but there’s no need to worry. Only a mere 19 km from port lies the distinguished El Faro de la Mola (La Mola Lighthouse). While Formentera is usually known for its white-sand beaches and turquoise waters, it also has a small peak, located on the easternmost edge of the island and ending on a 120-meter cliff. This is where the famous lighthouse sits. From there, the views of the Mediterranean Sea are impressive. So much so, that Jules Verne makes mention of the lighthouse in his book Héctor Servadac (Travels and Adventures Through the Solar World). In gratitude, the island erected a monument to the writer. Your next stop is the quaint and quiet town of El Pilar de la Mola, a small village that invites you to slow your pace as you take in its contrasting personality from the rest of the island. In the 18th century, they built their own church so they would not have to travel to the “other side of the island.” After your refreshing hike to La Mola, start a beautiful walk from the top along the path of the Ascent. Along the way, you can appreciate the wonderful views that this road offers, allowing you to see the rest of the stunning island in its entirety. Once you’ve come down, you will arrive at Es Calo (the Little Cove), a fisherman village with a charming and tiny port. Here you find some curious wooden boathouses. Their function is to protect small boats from salt water, but their true allure is how the village declared them of cultural interest in 2002, showcasing their importance to the island’s identity and humble beginnings. FMT302 CAN MARROIG - NATURE & ECOLOGY MAY 4, 2022 | 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM 3.5 HOURS $259pp Leaving the port immediately, you find Es Calo de s’oli (Oil Cove), a small, rocky area in the shape of a crescent moon where rocks, vegetation and water intermingle. It is one of the points that marks the entrance to the salty lagoon called El Estanque del Pez (the Fish Pond). Its name comes from the tranquil water that makes the ideal conditions for fish farming. It’s also a perfect anchorage for the locals’ small boats and their bathing spot of choice on a peaceful beach day. The coastal walk takes you to the Can Marroig Interpretation Center, a natural park of salt flats belonging to both Ibiza and Formentera. With an extension of more than 6,795 acres, the marine covers the south of Ibiza, while the north of Formentera encompasses a set of terrestrial and marine habitats with ecological, landscape, historical and cultural values. In the center, you can discover the importance of sea salt in the history and economy of the island, centuries before tourism also began to be a source of income. But what makes the ecology center truly unique is its status as a resting and nesting area for migratory birds. In the heart of Ibiza lies this eminently agricultural town far from the coast.
