A. KNOWLEDGE AND INTELLECTUAL ABILITY NEEDED TO CARRY OUT EXCELLENT RESEARCH A1. Knowledge i. Academic literacy and numeracy There is a rapid progression in the evolution of data science analytical methods and data integrity. Statisticians have evolved from managing and analysing small data sets to managing, analysing and reporting (as statistical consultants) on mega sized multidimensional data sets in previously unimaginable short computational time. As a statistical consultant and faculty member in higher education institutions, I have educated, advised and guided others in appropriate academic literacy and numerate skills. Cognitive abilities I have the innate ability to perform various mental activities simultaneously as result of my gender and self-discipline in managing home career, extended family and other 7
relevant activities that require my attention. In this context however, I refer to my ability for critical thinking and synthesis in matters most closely associated with learning and problem solving. A3. Creativity I have demonstrated creative ability to undertake effective theses supervision, secure fellowships and written proposals that have attracted funding. This has been for personal research and support for others to secure funding. i. Intellectual Insight My ability for intellectual insight affords me the opportunity to not only think outside the box when seeking solutions to challenges, but to also undergo self-reflection as a result of better self-knowledge. ii. Innovation Teaching and research can be more effective through the use of non-traditional methods. This is key to ensuring the continued relevance of institutions of higher education given the rapidly changing dynamics of reduced funding, bloating class sizes and staff/students ratios. Some of the methods I have adopted are rewarding students’ participation during classes, regular intergroup class competition, use of videos to simulate real-life scenarios and Prized Mathematics problems introduced in the Department of Mathematics and more recently, Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science. iii. Argument Construction I educate, advice and guide others in argument construction for effective communication and dissemination of research findings. B. PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS B1. Persevearance I started my academic career at age 34, much later than my contemporarries. There is an 11years gap between my BSc and my MSc degree. This required a great deal of perseverance and a tenacious determination to excel in my career which I had come into from an academic hiatus. This personal quality has enabled me make steady progress in my career while attending to my other duties. iii. Integrity I understand and demonstrate standards of good research practice in my research area and the University.
