WORD FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER « It is with lots of enthusiasm and great excitement that the Ultra-Trail Harricana du CanadaTM team is preparing to receive you in Charlevoix. We have worked hard for this 10th anniversary to offer you an exceptional event. Over the years, the event has continued to grow and consolidate all the while preserving that authentic and convivial spirit we love so much. Despite the challenges of COVID, we hope to present a festive and unforgettable rendez-vous that will live up to the expectations you have been nurturing for months. Thank you to the many partners who have made this event possible for 10 years as well as to the hundreds of volunteers who have helped us year after year. Every involvement makes a significant difference in the success of this project which is much more than an event, but the annual summit of a community of enthusiasts, active all year long. » Marline Côté, General Manager 4 | Athlete guide UTHC
WORD FROM the race director « Dear athletes, It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2021 edition of the Ultra-trail Harricana du CanadaTM. What a joy to see so many of you coming to join us in Charlevoix to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the event! For the occasion, we have prepared a very diversified program. From the 1 km for children, to the 125 km master event, we are offering exceptionally this year the nine (9) courses developed by UTHC. In addition we offer you the new 42 km of Saint-Siméon. Technical and wild, this last one will amaze you with its grandiose panoramas on the St-Lawrence river. Another novelty, the 125 km will now start on Friday afternoon to offer you an improved experience (and a longer weekend with us!). On the health and safety side, we have gone to great lengths to provide you with the best possible support, day and night, throughout your challenge. UTHC is fast approaching and, after the smaller 2020 edition, we are looking forward to seeing many of you on our different routes. We'll be able to celebrate 10 years of the Ultra-trail Harricana du CanadaTM, but above all, the pleasure of being together. Happy training and see you soon! » Julien Harvey, Race director WORD FROM the Deputy director and Head-Volunteers « It is with great exhilaration that we have been planning the 2021 edition of the Ultra-Trail Harricana du CanadaTM for the last several months. We always look forward to welcoming you, this year especially, to celebrate the tenth anniversary! I remember with great emotion that very first edition. Even back then , we were already setting the bar high. And today, we are more than ever committed to delivering an event that will be remembered for a long time. And to celebrate its tenth anniversary, UTHC marks the occasion by offering you ten races! It is with great pleasure that I will be on site for the tenth consecutive year with all the ultra- volunteers who get involved year after year and allow us to make this event happen. I take this opportunity to warmly thank them and wish you all a good race! » Erika Potvin, Deputy director and Head-Volunteers ultratrailharricana.com | 5

A WORD FROM LA traversée de charlevoix Surpassing oneself and perseverance are things that we know well at La Traversée de Charlevoix. Since its creation in 1978, this 105 km long hiking trail between Saint-Urbain and Mont Grand- Fonds, which Harricana has now been using for 10 years would not exist today if it had not been for the dedication of its founder, Eudore Fortin, and the many volunteers that have followed over the decades. Today we are proud to be able to share this heritage with athletes who also embody surpassing oneself and perseverance and to see our trail shine internationally through an event of such quality. We wish each participant the best of success and long life to the UTHC! Justin Verville Alarie, General Manager Sentiers Québec Charlevoix, gestionnaire de la Traversée de Charlevoix.
RUN TO END MS THE STORY OF A FUNDRAISER Sébastien Boivin learned a few years ago that he had multiple sclerosis (MS). Before his life changed, Sébastien was a man, a partner and a father, living a fulfilling life, and there was no way this damned illness would stop him. Versatile, he quickly swapped his hammers and his tool belt for a microphone and a job in events. Following a rare infection that had him hovering between life and death, Sébastien had to relearn how to live, talk, write… He will never walk again but he’s becoming more and more independent every day. Together with his sister, Geneviève Boivin and their friend Sebastien Cote, they founded the UTHC in 2012 to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. , WHAT IS IT? Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that attacks the central nervous system. Unpredictable, it manifests through various, often invisible symptoms, that differ from one person to another (fatigue, loss of balance, dizziness, numbness, vision problems, cognitive issues, among others). EVENTS 125 km / 4220 m D+ Duration: 13 h 15 to 29 h | 5 ITRA points Qualifying race for the Western States and the UTMB. A remote linear route in the heart of Quebec's boreal forest The 125 km of the Ultra-Trail Harricana du CanadaTM is a linear route through the mountains, lakes, rivers and deep forests of the Charlevoix tourist region. Mainly running on single track, often entwined by roots, adding to the technicality of a course where vigilance is required from start to finish. Although the beginning of the event is technical and abrupt, many sections are rolling, which makes it a demanding and exhausting track where it is possible to run all the time. The trail passes through four peaks. You will thus climb the Mont du Lac-à-l'Empêche, the Mont Morios which offers a breathtaking view of the region , the Noyée mountain which has the profile of a woman floating on water and finally the Montagne Noire, which precedes the finish line at the Mont Grands-Fonds ski resort and its green and marshy paths. Be careful not to underestimate this difficult course. In fact, just over half of the participants crossed the finish line since its inception in 2016. Starting in September 2021, the race will be launched on Friday afternoons in the depths of the boreal forest. Course overview Tips Read the detailed description of the course on our website. This will help you anticipate how to manage your energy and your effort during each section of the race. The race begins with 4 km of forest trails, a segment where you will position yourself properly before entering into a much more technical section where passing other runners will be difficult. But don’t worry – you’ll still have over 100 km to pick up the pace if you wish. Take advantage of this time to save your energy and give yourself better chances to succeed. The 125 km race is a very difficult course that’s not to be taken lightly. If you must abandon the race because you are poorly prepared, there will be major safety concerns for you, the other athletes, and the volunteers. Only well prepared, experienced athletes may participate. If you are uncertain about your ability to complete the race, do not hesitate to contact expert coaches or consult the Le Coaching du coureur training programs to evaluate whether your training plan will be sufficient. 12 | Athlete guide UTHC
80 km / 2146 M D+ Duration: 7 h 30 to 15 h 30 | 3 ITRA points The start of the 80 km is given at the Parc des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie reception area. You will run a loop of about 15 km in the Hautes Gorges valley by taking the Riverain trail which climbs into the forest to the des Érables dam that you will cross to follow the Malbaie river and join the 65 km route, halfway through the 125 km UTHC. You will cross several lakes and will be able to see, if you are lucky, hawks, beavers, porcupines or moose. The UTHC 80 is the ideal springboard for athletes who aspire to someday race in the UTHC 125 km. This competition takes place only every two years alternating with the 42 km Classic. The 80 km is held in even years (2022, 2024 ...) and the 42 km Classic in odd years (2021, 2023 ...). For the 10th anniversary of UTHC in 2021, we will make an exception to the alternation rule to offer all our routes, including the 80 km. Course overview 65 km / 1870 M D+ Duration: 5 h 40 to 11 h 30 | 3 ITRA points The 65 km is one of the most popular events of the Ultra-Trail Harricana du CanadaTM. It's a magnificent gateway to the ultra. It sets off in the early morning at the reception point of the Parc des Hautes- Gorges, which marks half way for the 125 km event, and shares the route of the Canadian Ultra-Trail World Tour event until the finish line at Mont Grand-Fonds. It is a linear route running along the Malbaie River before venturing into the mountains to play on the single tracks that weave their way between the ubiquitous trees. Top athletes run the entire length of this fast track (victory in 5 h 30 despite the 1900m D +) where race management is essential to perform. The trails require extreme vigilance due to an abundance of entwined roots. Course overview ultratrailharricana.com | 13
42 km -classic / 1 300 m D+ Duration: 3 h 30 to 8 h 30 | 2 ITRA points This trail strikes a balance between speed and technicality and is a perfect challenge for those who want to try out a long distance for the first time. You will come across many lakes and will maybe get the chance to cross paths with some of the local Canadian fauna such as the sparrowhawk, the beaver, the porcupine or the moose. Course overview NEW 42 km - St-Siméon / 1 545 m D+ Duration: 3 h 50 to 8 h 30 | 2 ITRA points The circuit, which connects Saint-Siméon to Mont Grand-Fonds through the National Trail, is a technical and singletrack trail throughout most of the distance. It takes you to the top of several wide-open summits offering spectacular and little-known views over the region, the St. Lawrence River, and the Palissades de Charlevoix. This trail is classified as difficult, offering few exit points to athletes abandoning the race, and is therefore reserved for experienced trail runners. Course overview 28 km / 1 000 m D+ Duration: 2 h 00 to 5 h 30 This race kicks off with an ascent of Mont Grand-Fonds for a little over 300 meters. Are you up for such an explosive start? This course is challenging and diverse in nature, some of its legs can be completed rather fast while others are extremely technical to the point of making you dance. It is the most popular race of the Ultra-Trail Harricana du CanadaTM. Course overview 14 | Athlete guide UTHC

TRAIL MARKING/FLAGGING There will be pink flags every 200 meters or less on all courses. There will also be markers counting down every kilometer (see picture above). The 80, 65, 42, 28, 20 and 10 km courses all eventually join up to the 125 km course, converging together towards the finish line and partly sharing the same markers. The 125km course is marked for the night time as of kilometre marker 109 onwards and are additionally marked with either reflective markers fixed to trees at 3 feet from the ground or placed on the ground on the forest roads. The 28 km is also fully marked for the night. Follow the red arrows to make sure you stay on the right trail. Prohibited sections are identified by prohibition markers (square and white) with the Harricana wolf logo or with orange ground markings. If you don't see any ribbons for 10 minutes, you have left the trail. Be alert when you leave the forest roads and must use the trails of the Ultra-Trail Harricana du CanadaTM. We have installed trestles to help you find the red arrows that direct you to the trails. Athletes are responsible for being on the correct course. In case of error, athletes must backtrack and take up the course again from where they left it. Any athlete who has not completed the entire marked course must notify the organization and declare themselves as disqualified. ultratrailharricana.com | 21

However, in order to avoid congestion and traffic problems at the departures of the 125 km and 42 km from Saint-Siméon, we recommend that you use the shuttles to get there. The shuttle is compulsory for the 42 km Classic. Once at the start site, attendants can drop off the athletes or use the temporary parking spaces for their race preparations. Due to the limited spaces in the departure area parking lots, your attendants will be asked to leave as soon as possible. In addition, no vehicle can stay at these sites for the day. RIDE-SHARE We have created a platform to ease ride-sharing in between participants who want to get to the start line the morning of the race. Please go to the following site to post or ask for available spots. shuttle buses Shuttle buses represent a risk for the spread of the virus as part of your race. We ask for your collaboration in following the volunteers’ guidelines. You will have to give your name before entering a vehicle. You will have to wash your hands before boarding the bus and wear a mask or face covering for the entire length of the trip. Thank you for your collaboration! To use a shuttle bus, each athlete must reserve a seat before August 25th by filling out the form on the following page: Register for shuttles 26 | Athlete guide UTHC

DROP BAGS Only athletes running the 125 km event have access to a drop bag service. 125 km A The North Face bag will be given to you when you pick up your bib. You must clearly identify your TNF drop bag. The morning of the race, at the starting line, you will be able to leave the bag, identified with your name and bib number. This drop bag will also be your finish bag so you should pack a towel and change of clothes. You should also pack enough clothes and equipment to spend a second night on the course. Drop bags will be available twice: once at the halfway mark at the parc national des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie aid station, and once more at the arrival site. (This service was supposed to be canceled according to the Health Guide, but we were able to reintegrate it after having discussions with Public Health authorities. We would invite only those people with no support crew to use the service). 42 km, 65 km and 80 km Participants in the 80 km and 65 km races can leave a bag with personal effects at the race start. A bag will be provided at the bib pick-up. The bag must be labelled as specified. A shuttle will bring the bag to the finish area. 30 | Athlete guide UTHC harricana.info | 30
support crew The assistance of a crew is permitted for the 125k only. The role of the crew is to offer comfort, equipment and food to their athlete. The crew is permitted at the La Marmotte, Parc des Hautes-Gorges, and Split aid stations as well as the Mont Grands-Fonds finish area. Crews are expected to be autonomous and will not have access to the food and fluids at aid station. Since space is limited, only one car per athlete is allowed at La Marmotte aid station. When they pick up their bibs, athletes will receive a sticker to give to the support crew. The sticker numbers will be noted as the cars arrive. Crew members must follow the access schedule to ease traffic on the road that will also be used by athletes during the race. Please note that the road leading to this refueling station is bumpy and is not recommended for low floor vehicles. See map. Warning about the cold and the night: With the change of schedule of the 125 km this year, the support teams will be present at night on certain sections of the course. Nights are cool in September and can even reach freezing. We invite you to prepare yourselves adequately with warm clothes. Small shelters (for example a small marquee tent) and stoves can be taken to the support team sites to help warm you up. The SEPAQ Hautes-Gorges aid station is accessible by car (paved road). See map. To get to the Split aid station. See map. To ensure easy access to aid stations, download the ONDAGO app for your smart phone. Interactive maps of the UTHC will show you the way to the aid stations. Members of the support team are limited to family members or close friends, that is; those living at the same address or including only one additional address. ultratrailharricana.com | 31

CUT OFF TIMES The cut off times are shown in the pace charts below. We ask that you respect these times and the on site personel who must enforce them by not arguing the cut offs with them. The race director has the authority, not the onsite volunteers. These times are realistic and are based on the results from past years. Because the events are held deep in the backcountry, we must ensure that the safety systems in place are not compromised. The medical team on-site could require you to abandon the race at any time should they determine your safety is at risk. An analysis of your physical state by the medical staff onsite could be required at the Parc des Hautes-Gorges aid station to determine whether you may continue the race or not. 38 | Athlete guide UTHC harricana.info | 38

SUSTAINABLE RACE From its very beginnings, Ultra-Trail Harricana du CanadaTM has taken an environmentally responsible approach in almost all of its actions and activities. These values guide our decision-making process and have helped the event stand out in several ways in the areas of social, economic and environmental development over the last several years. While this philosophy has always been an informal part of the organizational culture, our team wanted to ensure the continuity and coherence of our actions. In 2017, we decided to send a clear, consistent message to all our team members, partners, collaborators, suppliers as well as our runners, with a global, long-term vision aiming to structure and consolidate the steps that still need to be taken to continue reducing the environmental impacts of Événements Harricana’s projects. Our commitment to sustainable development Waste management ffProvide bins to collect compostable and recyclable materials at the main site and at the 15 aid stations, and encourage runners to use them correctly ; ffProhibit runners from throwing garbage on the ground during the run under penalty of disqualification ; ffGradually incorporate washable dishware for the post-race athlete meal ; ffGive remaining food to a local organization (the Service alimentaire et aide budgétaire de Charlevoix-Est) to redistribute to people in need ; Reducing the event's footprint ffGive out virtual swag bags. Instead of receiving printed materials, runners will be able to download partner promotions and ads on the web ; ffMake event medals out of biodegradable Quebec-sourced wood ; ffLimit the distribution of promotional items, especially those that don’t last long or that have limited value ; ffSell t-shirts so that only people who want them get them ; ffCut down on printed materials. Most communication is done on the web through the digital newsletter, social media, website, etc ; ffBorrow or rent materials from other organizations rather than buying them or having them custom-made for us. Likewise, we will lend out our materials and share our expertise with other organizations ; ffNo longer hand out drinking cups at the races. Runners must have their own reusable cups/ bottles ; ffEliminate disposable energy gel packs at aid stations ; ffUse reusable containers to deliver water to the aid stations ; 46 | Athlete guide UTHC
