ATHLETE GUIDE 2021 IRONMAN 70.3 Maastricht - Limburg - Ngin
WELCOME!
  THE NETHERLANDS
                    Rob Frambach - RACE DIRECTOR
The time has finally arrived: the time for an IRONMAN 70.3 in beautiful Maastricht.

We are delighted to welcome you to the first edition of IRONMAN 70.3 Maastricht - Limburg. Together
we are going to a festive weekend! However, we should consider the measures that have to be taken in
order to organize the event safely. In the coming period we will work on this and communicate what you
can expect in a timely manner.

The IRONMAN 70.3 Maastricht - Limburg is organized in a region with a rich IRONMAN history. From
2015 to 2018, the long-distance triathlon IRONMAN Maastricht - Limburg took place here. After the dis-
continuation of the long distance, IRONMAN Netherlands has continued with the IRONMAN 4:18:4 and
IRONMAN 5150. More than 50 percent of the athletes who participated in one of the shorter distances
now participate in the IRONMAN 70.3 Maastricht - Limburg.

Finally, we express our deep thanks for your trust and patience. Also, a heartfelt ‘thank you’ for our host
city, the municipality of Maastricht, the entire team, the suppliers and other partners who have worked
with heart and soul to give the participants an unforgettable weekend

sportive greetings,

Rob Frambach
Race director IRONMAN The Netherlands

WELCOME!
  THE NETHERLANDS
                    Els Visser - Winner 2018
I love Maastricht. The city is in my heart

Welcome athletes to this special city. The place where I won my first IRONMAN, a day I will never forget.
I am very honored to be able to work as an ambassador for IRONMAN The Netherlands in the coming
years!

Triathlon, what a unique sport it is and what a great passion we share! We all train hard to be able to deli-
ver this tough physical and mental performance. We are all going through the same thing and we share
our enthusiasm and our adventures. In the coming months I will try to further amplify the pure and deep
feelings we all experience so that during one of the IRONMAN competitions such as IRONKIDS, in a sprint,
5i50 or IRONMAN 70.3 competition, you will create memories on which you can always look back on and
inspire others!

I see the ambassadorship as an opportunity to create more attention for our sport and for sports in ge-
neral. Unfortunately, 50% of the Dutch population over the age of 18 is moderately or seriously obese and
45% of the Dutch do not participate in sports every week. I find this shocking! Sports means, among other
things, being fitter, having more energy, being more productive and living a happier life.

In addition to my personal athletic goals, I see it as a mission to get people moving and to let them expe-
rience the effect of sports. IRONMAN Netherlands organizes events accessible to everyone. I would love to
bring the not yet active athletes together and become part of the IRONMAN family!

After a period in which sport was unfortunately not encouraged by the government and many of us were
unable to do anything, we now have the opportunity to organize events again. The start line of the
IRONMAN Maastricht is in sight and we can go wild! We all did everything we could to be as fit as possible
at the start. I can’t wait to see you race and cheer to the finish!

If you see me walking around, I would really like it when you come up to me for a chat!

Also, I want to tell everyone to believe in yourself. You can do this, and you will make it an unforgettable
day. Together you are on the course and together we can do this! Enjoy and see you at the finish!

Love, Els

Anyone who lives on the border is quite used to it.
They know the neighbours’ habits and their culture.
To them borders don’t mean obstacles but opportunities.
Opportunities to create something together. To work
                    together cross-border.

Limburg is the Dutch front line with Europe.
That makes Limburgers powerful partners in
cross-border cooperations from which all parties
                  can reap the benefits.

You as a contender of Ironman Maastricht-Limburg are a
guest in a cross-border region famous for its international
and cross-border nature. Let’s cross some borders and have
                 a great race in Limburg.

CORONA MEASURES
  THE NETHERLANDS
                    IRONMAN 70.3 Maastricht - Limburg
The organisation of the IRONMAN 5150 and 4:18:4 Maastricht - Limburg will follow the guidelines pro-
vided by the gouvernment. We are continously in contact with the local authorities and are happy to
announce that the event will take place. However, we have to implement some measures to ensure the
race can take place.

The measures during the event:
• The one and a half meter measure applies at all locations, except during sports practice.
• During the competitions it is not mandatory to keep the one and a half meter distance. However,
there is plenty of space everywhere for athletes who want it. We ask every athlete to respect the wis-
hes of his or her fellow athletes
• Athletes are asked not to bring spectators. Public is not allowed in and around the start and finish
area. The swimming course is also hidden from view by means of fencing.
• Passers-by and residents alongside the course are asked to respect and comply to the measures in
force at that time, including the one and a half meter distancee. The organization monitors compli-
ance with the measures along the course.
• In addition, you may be requested to wear a mouth mask when entering the starting area. The orga-
   nization provides this.

Because the guidelines change rapidly, we will inform you in the week before the event about the
measures that will be in order during the event.

Please have a look at the following websites for an indication of the guidelines:

HISTORY
  THE NETHERLANDS
                    Origin and development of IRONMAN
In the year 1978 Naval Officer John Collins was out for a night out with some others
marines. The discussion arose about the challenge of three sporting events;
• Waikiki Swim over 3.8 kilometers,
• Around Oahu Bike Ride over 180 kilometers,
• Honolulu marathon over 42.195 kilometers.

The evening wore on and they could not agree which was the most challenging. They decided to find
out experimentally which of these events would be the toughest, by sticking them together and doing
it. The first to arrive could call himself a man of steel. This resulted in the first IRONMAN. Twelve athletes
managed to reach the finish line. The winner was Gordon Haller.

IRONMAN Hawaii currently has 2500 participants. The world-famous Long Distance World Champi-
onship had a mass start until last year. Now athletes are divided into different (age) groups and start
with time differences.

The following year 50 participants registered, but the competition was postponed one day and only 15
participants were at the start. The competition was initially hosted in Honolulu. From 1981 the organizati-
on moved to Kona, where the official Triathlon World Championship is still held today.

The IRONMAN triathlon became famous worldwide in 1982. Julie Moss was in the lead for the entire race
among the ladies, but was hit by the man with the hammer 1 kilometer before the finish. Due to dehy-
dration, she could no longer stand on her legs and crawled towards the finish. Hardly anyone remem-
bers that she was overtaken by Kathleen McCartney just before the finish, but the images of Julie Moss
went around the world and triathlon became a well-known sport.
The finish line; “You are an IRONMAN” originated from the mouth of Kona speaker Mike Reilly. In one
of his early years as a speaker, a friend of his joined in. Out of respect he spoke the words; You are an
IRONMAN for his friend. The response from the audience and his friend was so overwhelming that Reilly
decided to repeat it several times, with great success each time. From that moment on, the iconic image
that athletes have at their finish when they hear: “You are an IRONMAN”! and it has become a goal in
itself for triathletes to hear these famous words at their finish at least once in their sports career. Inciden-
tally, the use of these special words only applies to the full distance of the IRONMAN.

The first IRONMAN in Europe is that of Lanzarote, organized since 1992. Dutch over-
extractions there for Ben van Zelst, Frank Heldoorn and Katinka Wiltenburg in the past.

The first IRONMAN in the Netherlands took place in Maastricht. Bas Diederen and Yvonne van Vlerken
took the win in the first IRONMAN race in the Netherlands in 2015. Dutch win was there again in 2018
with Els Visser.

Since 2019, IRONMAN has been expanding its empire with so-called IRONMAN Multisport Festivals.
Westfriesland had the world’s first in 2019. A multisport festival consists of shorter and accessible dis-
tances such as the IRONMAN 4:18:4 (sprint triathlon) and the IRONMAN 5150 (Olympic distance). In 2021
IRONMAN Westfriesland and Maastricht - Limburg will be expanded with a 70.3.

Swimstart
• Take your white bag (clean clothes for after the race) with you when entering the starting area and
hand it in at the drop-off point. The organization ensures that these bags end up in the BLACK-
ROLL® Recovery Finishzone so that you have them at your disposal after the event.
• All athletes are obliged to use the swimming caps distributed by the organization.
• Before the start you will be checked for wearing the swimming cap and timing chip (on the left
ankle). It is also checked whether or not it is compulsory to wear a wetsuit.
• At the rolling start of the swim segment, the athlete passes a timing mat. No time can be observed
for athletes jumping the fences or entering the water at any other point. The athletes must leave
the swimming course through the official exit and walk on the time registration mat. Otherwise,
the organization cannot check whether an athlete is still in the water and possibly in distress. The
organization must then call in a rescue team to search for this athlete. The athlete is liable for the
      costs of this rescue operation.
• If for any reason you are unable to complete the swimming section, you must report to an official
      immediately.
• IRONMAN The Netherlands has set up a rolling swim start for its competitions.
• Athletes line up according to their realistically estimated swim time.

The locations of IRONMAN 70.3 Maastricht -Limburg, normally in the city center, have partly been moved
to ensure the passage of the event. The start location and transition zone is located on the Griend, so
swimming is also done in the Maas from the Kleine Griend, this is the normal start location. The cycling
route starts from De Griend, this route leads you through the beautiful South Limburg Heuvelland,
among other things. The running course goes via Oost-Maarland to Eijsden and back again. This year’s
finish location is at the Gouvernement in Maastricht. This location was the most suitable and yet unique
location that we found for you as a one-off alternative to the city center.

The registration, merchandise, athletes briefing and Expo are located on the “van Hasseltkade”,
collectively this area is called the IRONMAN Village.

                    All information about the swimming

Cut-off time
The cut-off time for the swim part is 01:10 hours after your start time.

Important information
Start protocol swimming part
Make sure you are ready in the starting area (15 minutes at the latest before the start). When entering
the starting area, it is checked whether you are wearing your swim cap and timing chip correctly. If you
do not wear the swim cap, timing chip or wristband, you are not allowed to start. A ‘rolling start’ applies
to all distances, in other words, 8 participants are started at the same time every 10 seconds. Stand in the
start area with your expected finish time. Follow the instructions of the organization and volunteers.

Keep the buoys on the swimming course to your left at all times. The buoys are red and yellow in color.

Extra information
The organization may decide, depending on the water temperature, to require a wetsuit. You will receive
by e-mail or in case of doubt at least one hour before the competition whether a wetsuit is mandatory,
whether it is a free choice, or whether it is prohibited.

CYCLING
  THE NETHERLANDS
                    All information about the cycling

Cut-off time
The cut-off time for the bicycle part is 04:20 hours after leaving the transition area.

Important information
During the race it is important that you follow the general traffic rules and that you stay healthy
mind used. Dangerous maneuvers and unheard of cycling behavior can lead to a dis-
qualification. It is also important that you always go to the right side of the road while driving
bicycles. Staying (cycling in the slipstream of another athlete) is not allowed and if you want to overtake
a previous athlete, this must be done within 25 seconds. There must be a minimum distance of 12
meters between you and the other athlete.

Although it is a closed track, be aware of unexpected traffic, stray pets, etc.

During the cycling part, two aid stations have been set up; at 32 and 68 km on the course. These are
arranged as follows:

WATER BYE! COLA BANANEN REPEN/ BYE! WATER WC WC LAATSTE
                                                   GELS KANS AFVAL

From the transition zone it is forbidden to overtake for the first 1.4 km because of the many bends, the
narrow road section and the much expected pedestrians. Here are signs with “no passing”. As soon as
overtaking is allowed again, you will see the “passing allowed” sign. There will also be a summons in
some places to reduce speed with “slow down” signs. This is usually followed by a sharp bend or several
bends.

Cut-off time
The cut-off time for the bicycle part is 03:00 hours after leaving the transition zone.

Important information
The running course initially follows the bicycle course (there are then no more cyclists on the course).
It is important that you keep left where indicated. This has to do with the fact that a small part of the
course is double-sided. A small part of the trail, 3 kilometers, you walk twice. You will receive a total of 2
lapbands, this is a reminder to yourself that you do not have to walk the round again after this, but can
turn left towards the finish.

There are 2 aid stations where you pass several times. At the following kilometer points you will pass a
service station: 5km, 10km, 13km and 18km.

                    All information for Relay Teams

Registration
Every team member must register and also submit a signed waiver (usually already done at the time
of registration). Relay teams receive: 1 start number (at registration) and 1 timing chip (at bike check-in).
Each team member receives an athlete’s bag (when registering) and a wristband. It is checked whether
every athlete has registered and whether a contact person is mentioned in case of emergency.

Bike check-in
Relay teams check in their bikes in the same way as individual athletes. However, athletes from relay
teams do not check in colored change bags because athletes do not have to change clothes. Athletes
attach their helmet to the bike at check-in.

Transition Zone
Relay teams have indicated their own location in the transition area with the ‘Team transition area’ sign.
See the map of the transition area.

Timingchip en startnumber
The timing chip and start number will be passed on at the team location in the transition area. The
timing chip is passed from the swimmer to the cyclist. The cyclist is already wearing the start number.
Upon return, the cyclist hands over the timing chip and the start number to the runner. Relay partici-
pants are allowed to finish together! You are asked to take individual finishers into account. They are also
entitled to a nice finishing moment.

Bike check-out
The bike check-out can only be done with the start number, the wristband and the timing chip. The
cyclist of the relay team takes care of the bike check-out and collects his bike.

Swimmer
Before the competition, the swimmer can bring a sports bag to the transition area. The bag will be deli-
vered to the transition zone and collected after the swim in the relay teams area.

Cyclist
The cyclist takes the blue transition bag with equipment. This can be brought to the transition area be-
fore the start. This is hung on the bag rack at the corresponding start number.

Runner
The runner gets a white transition bag. This will be brought to the transition zone before the start and
the organization will bring it to the BLACKROLL® Recovery Finishzone.

A relay team consists of 2 or 3 athletes. The decision which team member swims, cycles and runs can be
made at the latest until registration.

Cycling in Eijsden-Margraten
The extensive hilly landscape is especially popular with cyclists. Various professional cycling tours are

bikers, among others, the Bart Brentjens Challenge. But how about a slower acceleration? For recreatio-
nal cyclists there are numerous routes along places of interest in a very varied landscape.

For example, you can cycle to freedom. After years of war, Mesch is the first village in the Netherlands
to be liberated on September 12, 1944! In Eijsden-Margraten there is still much to see and hear from this
turbulent time. So much that you better get on the bike! ‘Cycling to freedom’ is a thematic cycle route
