Cambodian Living Arts (CLA)’s mission is to be a catalyst in a vibrant arts
sector, inspiring new generations. In 1998, their founder Arn CHORN-POND
returned to Cambodia after being a refugee in the USA. He started CLA to
help master artists pass on their skills to young students, in order to keep
Cambodia’s endangered cultural heritage alive. As Cambodia developed, a
new generation of artists began to emerge. CLA supported them by running
scholarships and fellowships, creating jobs, and building new audiences for
arts. Now, as CLA enters their third decade, their programmes aim to give
artists the resources and opportunities to start telling their stories of
contemporary Cambodia — from stages, schools and community spaces, to
international forums and audiences across the world.

The Music Academy, Madras is a landmark institution in the history of the fine
arts. Run entirely by voluntary effort, it was founded in 1928 as an outcome
of the music conference that was held in conjunction with the All India
Congress Session in Madras city. It was conceived to set the standard for
Carnatic music. In 1929, it began hosting annual conferences on music and
started the December Music Festival of Madras. Its series of publications have
been of immense use to scholars and the public. In the 1930s, the Academy
championed classical dance, provided a forum for discussions and presented
dance performances. It is also a venue for Hindustani music and classical
dance forms from the rest of India and the world. Last year, UNESCO gave
Chennai the creative city tag chiefly because of the December Music Festival.
