ARTISTIC DIRECTOR The Timeline The Salmon Arm Folk Music Society is seeking to fill the Artistic Director position for the 30th Annual ROOTSandBLUES Festival to ensue in August 2022. The new Artistic Director position will begin on October 1, 2021. With a one month overlap with the current Artistic Director to enable a smooth transition. The Organization The Salmon Arm Folk Music Society is a non-profit, charitable organization that presents the annual ROOTSandBLUES Festival (SARB) and is currently planning its 29th festival for August 2021. Taking place in the beautiful Shuswap Lake area in the interior of BC, the festival has been a cultural presence in the community for over two decades. The SAFM mission is to present excellent world class, culturally diverse music, and artistic experiences to enrich and build community. The Position Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Artistic Director (AD) is responsible for conceiving, developing, and implementing the artistic vision and programming focus of the Salmon Arm ROOTSandBLUES Festival. The AD works under the guidance of the ED and supervises SARB artistic contractors and the event program. The AD will ensure the SARB is guided by its objectives of artistic excellence, creativity, diversity and community engagement. The AD’s SARB vision and program will inspire staff, sponsors, stakeholders, and audiences. As a public face of the society for the SARB program, the AD will play a key role in maintaining and enhancing the SARB brand and awareness in this community and in targeted audience markets. The AD must be willing to make the SARB his/her priority. Specific Responsibilities • Provides visionary and inspirational leadership to development and presenting the SARB event and delivering an ambitious and distinctive artistic policy and program that ensures a strong artistic identity and excites a broad range of audiences. • Works with the ED to develop sponsorship and fundraising activities that will ensure the SARB’s financial stability and sustainability. • In support of the ED, the AD will act as the visible “face” of, and spokesperson for, SARB festival and supporting activities. • Represents SARB to relevant regional, national and international cultural networks. • Builds new partnerships and identifies opportunities for expanding SARB’s reputation locally, nationally and internationally. • Leads on all aspects of the SARB’s artistic festival program, including produced work, commercial co-productions and collaborations, presenting, rights negotiation and agreements and other forms of creative work. • Leads and inspires creative teams, both permanent and freelance. • Delivers an artistic program based on diversity that appeals to a broad range of audiences and increases the diversity and loyalty of audiences. • Works actively with staff in developing and implementing audience development initiatives, ensuring strong links between programming decisions and audience development based on the SARB strategic plan and market analysis. • Adhere to SAFMS Code of Conduct policy. Outreach • Leads a well-designed SARB program of activities and educational opportunities that build on past success and continue to support our community approach. • Works with school and educational partners to implement programs and outreach that are sustainable and practical. Team Leadership • Demonstrates a track record as a leader, strategist, and creative thinker. • Provides leadership which inspires and motivates the festival team. • Keeps the office team updated with emerging priorities and assists them in modifying plans and practices as required. External Communications, Partnerships and Relationships • In collaboration with the ED, seeks out and leverages relationships and resources to establish and build on partnerships which drive organizational success. • Maintains key relationships with existing funding partners, develops new relationships for the SARB, and assists in identifying alternative funding opportunities. (Grant writing) • Supports staff in creating and maintaining sponsor and donor relationships. • Provides written content to support promotional and communication activities. • Through building strong community relationships, contributes to the generation of new sponsor/donors. • Supports the strategic objectives of the organization by communicating SARB messaging that is consistent with the communications plan. • Acts as a key spokesperson (with Board Chair and ED) on behalf of the SARB. Board Relations • Prepares and presents monthly updates to the Board on artistic programming, performer budgeting and SARB artistic planning. • Participates in the strategic planning process and ensures that the artistic vision and programming supports the strategic direction of the board. • Assists in identification and recruitment of prospects for Board membership. • Supports Board committees in the development and implementation of their respective goals and objectives. Financial Responsibilities • Collaborates with the ED in the budget planning process to ensure the delivery of the artistic program. • Works within agreed upon budgets and provides monthly updates to the ED and the Board of Directors. • Ensures adherence by creative teams, both permanent and freelance, to the organization’s code of conduct policy and current operation procedures. • Responsible for all SARB artist negotiations, agreements, and payouts. • Ensure SARB complies with BC Arts and other grant requirements which stipulate at least 65% of the performers are Canadian. Reporting Structure Reports to: • Executive Director and the Board of Directors Supervises: • All SARB Artists • SARB Contracts related to artists, artist hospitality and accommodations • Stage Manager, Artistic Coordinator, and Artistic Liaison Head Supervisor Liaises with: • Administrative and marketing staff • Creative team members and contractors • Donors • SARB staff • Volunteers • Community & Business Stakeholders • Local, regional, national and international media Qualifications General • The ideal candidate is an experienced artistic director with a proven track record of success in festival production. • He/she is a collaborative artist who is committed to working as part of a team to build on the reputation of the SARB and help it to maintain and enhance its importance in the cultural community of Interior BC. • The successful candidate will be aware of developments in creative practice and inspired by the challenges and opportunities of festival programming in 2022 and beyond. • He or she is passionate about the relationship between a community and its audience, and the building an audience that reflects diversity for the community. Skills and Abilities • Has a proven track record both in programming, event creation, budgeting, contract writing, and human resource management. • Has the ability to collaborate as part of a team to achieve strategic goals and measurable objectives. • Possesses a thorough understanding of and commitment to the values of a culturally based non- profit society. • Values the involvement of volunteer leadership and is skillful in harnessing and directing volunteer support. • Has experience in delivering educational, youth-oriented community programs. • Possesses a proven commitment to engaging young people, families and new, diverse audiences. • Ability to deliver results within clearly defined budgets and timelines. Leadership Skills • An effective manager of people and a good communicator who provides value-based leadership, clearly articulates and models expectations and is willing to be accountable and to hold others accountable in a positive and effective manner. • A highly effective mentor who is able to build a team, delegate responsibility, monitor performance and ensure accountability. • Possesses a coaching and mentoring style that engages and motivates staff and a diverse group of volunteers. Relationship Skills • Superior relationship builder –possesses the presence, stature and ability to generate respect and build relationships with various internal and external stakeholders and partners; committed to building positive, collaborative relationships. • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with other agencies and various public, private and not-for-profit partners. Understands the value of building relationships for the long-term. • Ability to listen, understand and respond to needs; ability to build credibility and trust. Personal Characteristics • Capable of motivating and attracting young artists and creative partners and inspiring those both in and outside the SARB/SAFMS organization. • Possesses a high degree of integrity and has a passion for the mandate of the SARB. • Ability to maintain and forge new creative relationships. • Exceptional oral and written communication, presentation, facilitation and interpersonal skills. Is able to present reports and ideas in an honest, confident, clear and forthright manner. • Energetic and enthusiastic. • Has experience in programming culturally diverse work. • Influences and inspires confidence in others.
