Stationery: You will need to be extremely well-organised. French A-level is a very academic subject, which will prepare you adequately for your university studies. Therefore you will need to come to all your lessons fully equipped at all times. A4 level arch file (a big ring binder) One pack of 10 extra large dividers, hole punched lined paper, and strong plastic pockets) Pencil case with: a few black pens, blue pens, a red pen, a green pen, glue, child- friendly scissors, highlighters, rubber, pencils, small stapler, small hole puncher, small ruler etc. Post-its and small revision cards 8
Expectations of work and effort – The keys to success You will need to work very hard for your A-level French, as for all your A-levels. You will need to do the work in this booklet over the summer. Over the next two academic years, you will be expected to: Come to all your lessons and on time – your attendance and punctuality will be closely monitored and reported to the leadership of the school as well as to your parents. You are expected to CATCH UP on lessons missed: we will assume that you have caught up in fill in time for the following lesson. You will need to complete all homework and hand it in on time. You are now a Sixth Former. You cannot afford to be a passive learner anymore. Participating actively in the class discussions will be non-negotiable: you will gain confidence and improve your speaking skills. You will need to research and learn a great deal of advanced vocabulary every week, and will be tested on it on a regular basis. This will constitute short assessments that will be recorded and reported to all parties. You will need to do the same for grammar. You will be given a list of French speaking films to watch and you will need to complete some work about them. You will be expected to watch and read news about France and French-speaking countries on the Internet and report to the class. We will all endeavour to speak French as much as possible in class, not only when working on a particular task but as routine classroom language. Have a go at setting your IPhone or Facebook profile to French. This will familiarise you with basic everyday language. You can probably show off to your teacher in class that you know all the technology vocabulary, which will be useful in exams. Get used to it, do not hesitate to ask when you are stuck and enjoy! Probably the most exciting but different part of an A-Level language course is how much you are expected to know about other cultures. Look on Wikipedia to learn about the French countries asking yourself: what do people eat in Senegal? What are French Canadian schools like? What is the French penal 9
system like? Do the Swiss celebrate birthdays? If you’re feeling brave, look through these pages in French…go on – be brave! Finally, we will work very hard so you can enjoy and get the best grades possible. So you will do the same: work hard and enjoy! Bonne chance et à très bientôt! 10
