SB Welcome from our Chairs Thank you for your interest in the CEO position for our wonderful charity, MediCinema. Over 20 years ago our founder, Christine Hill, had the crazy idea of installing a full, proper, industry-specified cinema into the heart of St Thomas’ Hospital in London. Her love of film and passion for the NHS fuelled the project, along with a deep-rooted belief that patients in hospitals – especially those in long term care – would benefit enormously from the power of film and the escape of cinema. Two decades on we now have six full MediCinema venues with plans and the ambition for many more. We have delivered more than 230,000 experiences for patients, peaking at 43,000 experiences in a single year in 2020. Christine’s beliefs have been substantiated by both the feedback from our many visitors but also research that the charity has commissioned showing that the experience helps with recovery from hospital treatment. A few hours of release, excitement and wonder in the darkened room of one of our cinemas, with a full-size screen and immersive sound is disproportionately important to patients as well as their families and friends. A genuine physical and emotional escape from the constraints of their wards and their own thoughts and concerns. Covid has challenged us like everyone else and has also given us new opportunities. Whilst some of our venues continued operating all had some interruptions to their service. Like so many great businesses, our team adapted and swiftly worked with existing hospital bedside AV suppliers to offer some exclusive free bedside content to our patients. This in turn got us thinking about the future and how we could continue to do this alongside accelerating our ambitious expansion plan for new cinema venues, thus bringing some of the escape through film to many, many more patients. Running an individual MediCinema venue - and indeed the charity as a whole – is a complicated business with so many stakeholders from the local teams, sponsors, partners in the film industry and, of course, the amazing local NHS trusts. Keeping the charity running effectively even in ‘normal’ times is a task in itself. Add into that the priority of fundraising alongside our ambitious growth plans then the importance of finding our new leader - someone who can balance driving strategic momentum with looking after the existing operations – is obvious. You will be leading a small yet passionate central team and some amazing individual cinema managers; in turn, you will be supported by a strong group of trustees recruited from NHS, film, finance and charity backgrounds. Our outgoing CEO, Kat Mason, has been with us for seven years and leaves us in a very strong place, despite the challenges of navigating through a pandemic. We are MEDICINEMA | CEO
SB immensely grateful to her and yet are excited by the new phase we are now headed into. There is planned change occurring in the position of Chair as well. Having fulfilled the maximum statutory six years in the position, Paul has to leave us but is being replaced by Kezia. Hence the dual signatories to this letter. Kezia has been a Trustee for the charity for two years and has had a well-planned and thorough handover period for the last twelve months as Deputy Chair. If you are passionate about making a difference for patients, and want to be part of growing an exciting organisation, which is embracing digital technology and at the heart of the film business, then please apply! SB About us MediCinema is a growing national, registered UK charity that improves the wellbeing and quality of life of NHS patients, their families and carers through the power of the shared cinema experience and the magic of film. We achieve this by building and running cinemas in hospitals equipped with space for beds, wheelchairs and medical equipment, and providing free films (and activities) at bedsides for patients of all ages. Our services help to improve emotional, mental and physical health, reducing feelings of isolation, anxiety and stress, and increasing patient resilience. Founded in 1999 at St Thomas’s Hospital, we build, install and manage state-of-the-art cinemas in hospitals, providing ‘Cinematherapy’ and an invaluable space for patients to escape the isolation of their wards or illness, by offering them stimulation, social engagement and relaxation through films they can enjoy with family and loved-ones, whilst remaining safe in the hospital environment. Our purpose-built and purpose-run MediCinemas screen for free the latest releases the film industry has to offer; they are set up to accommodate patients in wheelchairs, beds, on drips or monitors, and are manned by trained volunteers and nurses. We cater for all ages, including special children’s and paediatric support at a number of our sites. Click HERE to watch a 1 minute video featuring patient Sienna, with actor Simon Pegg, which brings to life what we do and why Feedback from attendees is conclusive. Our patient surveys show that: 99% of respondees said MediCinema makes a positive difference to their experience of hospital 92% said it reduces anxiety 93% that it reduces isolation 95% that is makes them feel relaxed 90% that it gives them something to talk about afterwards 96% that it gives them a sense of normality 91% that it makes them feel better. SB The charity is well supported by the film industry. All films are donated for us to show to patients and their families, and the film and cinema industry are keen to support us more in our fundraising and profile-raising endeavours. We are also supported by talent, and we have a high-profile roster of patrons. Recent support can be seen in Simon Pegg fronting our cinema advert campaign, Emma Thompson spearheading our private ‘bridging fund’ asks this year, as well as multiple stars supporting the charity on social channels in 2020, including Tom Hiddleston supporting the charity through twitter and at his recent Loki premiere. The charity has developed considerably in the past six years, from delivering 17,000 cinema experiences to patients and their families in 2015 to 24,700 cinema experiences in 2019 and 43,000 cinema and bedside experiences in 2020. It currently runs 6 MediCinemas around the UK. Our revenue income has also been growing, reaching £1.2m in 2019 through greater visibility and the development of sustainable income streams, and closer working with the film and cinema industry as well as our hospital partner charities. While our cinemas had to close in March 2020, the charity responded exceptionally well to the needs for patients during the pandemic, reimagining its services and extending its reach through a bedside service and on-ward activities in 2020. Our cinemas started reopening in August 2020 for socially distanced screenings and have provided lifelines to patients and staff alike, where able, through the crisis. Financially, the charity has weathered the covid crisis well, and was fortunate to go into the crisis with good reserves to fall back on and excellent financial management, with board and executive support, has seen the charity maintain a stable financial situation despite 50% of its annual revenue income being lost due to the closure of commercial cinemas that are a key source of our fundraising. MediCinema is rebuilding and reimagining this year, and we are refining our strategic vision and returning to our ambitious growth plan to increase the number of people we reach each year to 75,000 by 2025 and doubling our cinemas. With our funding streams rebuilding, and our activity growing, we are now looking for an exceptional, inspiring Chief Executive to join the team at this exciting time to direct the charity’s strategy and activity, building the team needed to continue our journey of transformation and achieve our ambitious growth strategy.
