APPLICATION PACK Communications & Development Director - | Riverside Studios
INTRODUCTION
Riverside Studios is looking for someone to fill the newly created position of Communications &
Development Director. Reporting to the Executive Director, and leading a team of in-house staff and external
suppliers, the incumbent will take the lead on all of our fundraising and revenue generation activities (both
commercial and charitable) with responsibility for all marketing and communications, as well as providing
leadership in our community engagement and stakeholder management programmes. This is a full-time
position, however we offer a flexible approach and strive to accommodate all working styles.

It is an exciting role at the forefront of Riverside being able to deliver on its core charitable objective of
making the arts accessible to all - and it is a role that we hope will capture the imagination of a dynamic
individual who shares our passion and values.

Like most arts organisations, Riverside has had to navigate carefully the world of Covid.

With the support of Arts Council England, our funders and loyal audiences, we are in a position to focus on
re-building our business and fulfilling our charitable objectives.

We’re also a relatively new team, with loads of energy, great ideas and ambition for the future of Riverside.
We’re seeking to introduce new people to that team who enrich our thinking and approach, and who
represent our core values of inclusivity, diversity, the pursuit of excellence and embedding high levels of
creativity across all we do. We want to be a welcoming employer, sensitive to the needs and lived experience
of a diverse team, confident that such an approach enriches the whole organisation and our work. This role
is a critical part of that plan.

Riverside offers you an excellent working environment with enthusiastic colleagues who get along well,
communicate and co-operate with each other. The working climate is informal but we work hard. Next to
good terms of employment Riverside offers you the opportunity to work in a responsible and challenging
job within a dynamic and ambitious environment. We are all proud to be part of Riverside – we all share
                                                                                        the same passion
                                                                                        and dedication to
                                                                                        the company and
                                                                                        embrace differences
                                                                                        in cultural

RIVERSIDE STUDIOS BACKGROUND
For over 40 years Riverside Studios has been the home of an extraordinary mix of theatre, film, comedy, art,
dance, music and television: a cultural hub that has attracted some of the world’s best creative talent including
the likes of Samuel Beckett, David Bowie, Benjamin Zephaniah, Amy Winehouse, Yoko Ono, Allen Ginsberg,
Anna Massey, Alan Bates, Tadeusz Kantor, Lenny Henry, Michael Clark, Complicite and The Wooster Group to
name but a few, and TV studios that brought us much loved shows including Doctor Who, Top of the Pops, TFI
Friday and The Apprentice: You’re Fired! from the past, through to Have I Got News for You and Eggheads today.

We are driven by a simple belief. We believe in the power of creativity to bring people together, unlock new
possibilities and ideas, and spark positive change in the world. We are for our community, and for artists and
audiences - a team who love the new and the next. And so we seek out bold, innovative new ways for audiences
to experience the arts, and for artists to tell their stories.

Our currency is the arts and creative expression. We are clear, focused, and single-minded in our mission to
make the world a better place, starting with our local community. We present an artistic programme and operate
an arts centre that is inclusive and accessible.

We intend that the new Riverside will be at the forefront of innovative performance and art in the UK; a
supportive and welcoming home for artists, able to take their creative vision in any direction. The Covid
pandemic has dealt numerous devastating blows to the industry. Riverside wants to use this moment to
reinvigorate ourselves and reinvent the way in which we work with artists in a post-Covid world. What this means
is that we will be an affordable, innovation-friendly home, that offers artists a one-stop shop where they can
rehearse, stage, film, stream and present their work to a live audience in person or streamed online worldwide.

In the post-Covid world Riverside is in a unique position to support artists and theatre makers as they look for
digital solutions to audience reach and engagement and as they discover new ways of working. We are extremely
proud that the new Riverside Studios has been built with the most advanced digital technology at its core. This
has enormous potential for theatre makers to present their work simultaneously in the theatre and online or
   direct broadcast globally.

As we emerge from the pandemic, audiences will want to consume their culture in different ways. Some will
want to be in the space where the work is created as traditional audience members, others may prefer to watch
in a cinema, or on an outdoor screen, on their computers in the foyer or on their phones walking along the river.
We are uniquely positioned to enable this.

APPLICATION PACK Communications & Development Director - | Riverside Studios
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The main duties associated with the role span the abovementioned key areas.

Specific expectations for delivery in each area are as follows:

• Marketing and Communications
The Communications & Development Director will have oversight of our Marketing and Communications
Strategy and will work with the Marketing Manager and outside agencies to deliver on that strategy.

The Marketing team has a dual function – to market Riverside broadly as well as to market specific
Riverside offerings (e.g. food and drink, cinema and events), and to utilise all channels available to it to
position Riverside positively in the minds of our audience.

The team also supports productions using Riverside for performances and the third-party agencies
they retain to maximise audiences for their work. Crucially, to maximise the audience development
and income generation potential for every production in our season, this will involve working with
independent, commercial and emerging producers and artist as well as outside agencies.

To oversee marketing and income generation initiatives for our cinemas and exhibitions.

Success in this role will be measured in terms of audience growth and levels of engagement, as well as
success at driving a shift in audience profile as part of our broader business objectives.

• Fundraising and Sponsorship
As a charity, fundraising is a critical part of Riverside’s sustainability, and the Communications &
Development Director will take the lead in identifying suitable fundraising opportunities from trusts
and foundations and funders such as Arts Council England; writing and submitting fundraising
proposals; entering into funding agreements and attending to all necessary reporting and governance
responsibilities associated with funds received.

The Communications & Development Director will also oversee the development and implementation
of our individual giving fundraising strategy and our relationships with key individual donors, including
Patrons and Founder Members.

Corporate sponsorship is a new area of exploration for Riverside and we would expect the
Communications & Development Director to take the lead in developing our commercial offering, and to
work with agencies and direct clients to secure ongoing corporate sponsorship.

For this area, specific fundraising goals would be set and agreed, and the incumbent’s performance
would be regularly reviewed against those goals.

• Stakeholder Management
Riverside, as a progressive arts institution, seeks to develop a wide range of relationships with key
stakeholders in the arts, fundraising, civil society, educational, corporate and charity sectors. The
Communications & Development Director will take ownership of our high-level stakeholder management
plan and oversee its implementation.

A specific, critical stakeholder group for Riverside is our surrounding community. The Communications
& Development Director would, together with our Development & Community Manager, formulate and
implement plans and opportunities for us to engage with this community and to meet our charitable
objective of making the arts accessible to all.

Success in this area will be ascertained by the frequency and depth of engagement with our community,
participation levels in our community events, and through the measurement of positive growth in
sentiment towards Riverside through ongoing and regular surveys of our community.
APPLICATION PACK Communications & Development Director - | Riverside Studios
• Events, Hires and Tenant Management
The Communications & Development Director will work with the Events Co-Ordinator to ensure the
successful delivery of private and third-party events and hires of Riverside’s facilities. The Director will
also pull together teams across their portfolio to develop marketing strategies to build this part of our
business and to maximise revenue streams we derive from it.

The Communications & Development Director, together with the Events Co-Ordinator, would be
accountable for achieving specific revenue and usage targets.

Beyond the specific aspects of the portfolio detailed above, the Communications & Development
Director, as a member of the Senior Management Team, will have specific budget development and
monitoring responsibilities for their area; will be expected to contribute to discussions about all aspects
of Riverside’s business and objectives and will be part of broader discussions around HR and other
company policies. As a result, we would expect the successful candidate to have some experience
working at a senior level for an organisation of similar size and scope.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
We’re committed to fostering a workplace in which individual differences are recognized, appreciated,
respected and responded to in ways that fully develop and utilise each person’s talents and strengths.
Inclusivity is one of our core values, and so we actively encourage those from diverse and minority

• Over 10 years’ experience in either communications or fundraising/development, with five years’
experience of working across the other areas detailed in this job specification.
• Have an established network of contacts and relationships with relevant funders and funding agencies.
• Experience of managing a range of specialist suppliers and agencies, and aligning those suppliers
around the achievement of strategic objectives.
• An affinity for the mission, vision and work of Riverside Studios and a passion to help achieve its
success.

• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with a range of people and environments.
