INTRODUCTION Riverside Studios is looking for someone to fill the newly created position of Communications & Development Director. Reporting to the Executive Director, and leading a team of in-house staff and external suppliers, the incumbent will take the lead on all of our fundraising and revenue generation activities (both commercial and charitable) with responsibility for all marketing and communications, as well as providing leadership in our community engagement and stakeholder management programmes. This is a full-time position, however we offer a flexible approach and strive to accommodate all working styles. It is an exciting role at the forefront of Riverside being able to deliver on its core charitable objective of making the arts accessible to all - and it is a role that we hope will capture the imagination of a dynamic individual who shares our passion and values. Like most arts organisations, Riverside has had to navigate carefully the world of Covid. With the support of Arts Council England, our funders and loyal audiences, we are in a position to focus on re-building our business and fulfilling our charitable objectives. We’re also a relatively new team, with loads of energy, great ideas and ambition for the future of Riverside. We’re seeking to introduce new people to that team who enrich our thinking and approach, and who represent our core values of inclusivity, diversity, the pursuit of excellence and embedding high levels of creativity across all we do. We want to be a welcoming employer, sensitive to the needs and lived experience of a diverse team, confident that such an approach enriches the whole organisation and our work. This role is a critical part of that plan. Riverside offers you an excellent working environment with enthusiastic colleagues who get along well, communicate and co-operate with each other. The working climate is informal but we work hard. Next to good terms of employment Riverside offers you the opportunity to work in a responsible and challenging job within a dynamic and ambitious environment. We are all proud to be part of Riverside – we all share the same passion and dedication to the company and embrace differences in cultural backgrounds and skills. This is a position in which you can thrive. Whether you’re early in your career or an experienced professional, Riverside provides you with everything you need to excel in your job and for personal growth. You will be actively encouraged to increase your skillset Mischief at the Movies (Studio 3, June 2021) and to attend relevant events. We are constantly looking for ways to make our work more rewarding, and to build a workplace that matches the energy, flexibility and creativity on which we flourish.
RIVERSIDE STUDIOS BACKGROUND For over 40 years Riverside Studios has been the home of an extraordinary mix of theatre, film, comedy, art, dance, music and television: a cultural hub that has attracted some of the world’s best creative talent including the likes of Samuel Beckett, David Bowie, Benjamin Zephaniah, Amy Winehouse, Yoko Ono, Allen Ginsberg, Anna Massey, Alan Bates, Tadeusz Kantor, Lenny Henry, Michael Clark, Complicite and The Wooster Group to name but a few, and TV studios that brought us much loved shows including Doctor Who, Top of the Pops, TFI Friday and The Apprentice: You’re Fired! from the past, through to Have I Got News for You and Eggheads today. We are driven by a simple belief. We believe in the power of creativity to bring people together, unlock new possibilities and ideas, and spark positive change in the world. We are for our community, and for artists and audiences - a team who love the new and the next. And so we seek out bold, innovative new ways for audiences to experience the arts, and for artists to tell their stories. Our currency is the arts and creative expression. We are clear, focused, and single-minded in our mission to make the world a better place, starting with our local community. We present an artistic programme and operate an arts centre that is inclusive and accessible. We intend that the new Riverside will be at the forefront of innovative performance and art in the UK; a supportive and welcoming home for artists, able to take their creative vision in any direction. The Covid pandemic has dealt numerous devastating blows to the industry. Riverside wants to use this moment to reinvigorate ourselves and reinvent the way in which we work with artists in a post-Covid world. What this means is that we will be an affordable, innovation-friendly home, that offers artists a one-stop shop where they can rehearse, stage, film, stream and present their work to a live audience in person or streamed online worldwide. In the post-Covid world Riverside is in a unique position to support artists and theatre makers as they look for digital solutions to audience reach and engagement and as they discover new ways of working. We are extremely proud that the new Riverside Studios has been built with the most advanced digital technology at its core. This has enormous potential for theatre makers to present their work simultaneously in the theatre and online or direct broadcast globally. As we emerge from the pandemic, audiences will want to consume their culture in different ways. Some will want to be in the space where the work is created as traditional audience members, others may prefer to watch in a cinema, or on an outdoor screen, on their computers in the foyer or on their phones walking along the river. We are uniquely positioned to enable this. Lisa Dwan in Happy Days (Studio 2, June/July 2021)
