THE DOCTORAL COURSE IN KUROSHIO SCIENCE, GRADUATE SCHOOL OF INTEGRATED ARTS AND SCIENCES KOCHI UNIVERSITY APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION TO THE DOCTORAL PROGRAM (Start of Academic Year: October 1, 2020 and April 1, 2021) ADMISSION FOR FEE-PAYING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS This program is intended for applicants who have graduated from Kochi University and those from universities that have an Agreement of Exchanges with Kochi University (partner universities) to pursue a graduate course (doctoral program for the 2020 or 2021 academic year) at the Graduate School of Kuroshio Science, Kochi University as follows: 1. PROGRAM (1) The program consists of thesis research and course work. All instruction is either in English or in Japanese. (2) The program is a three-year doctoral course. Students are required to gain 14 or more credits and receive the necessary research guidance and successfully pass the final examination and dissertation. (3) Students will be awarded the degree Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from Kochi University after completion of the course. 2. MAJOR FIELDS Applicants are requested to find a suitable supervisor from the list of Fields of Instruction and Professors at the end of this guide (pp. 5-7) and to contact the prospective supervisor in advance. 3. NUMBER OF STUDENTS The total number of successful applicants is limited. 4. ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS (1) Nationality: Those who do not have Japanese nationality or the right of permanent residence. (2) Educational record: 1. Those who hold a Master’s degree or who are expected to complete a Master’s degree from a partner university by the end of September 2020 (for admission in October 2020) or by the end of March 2021 (for admission in April 2021). 2. Those who hold a valid degree from a partner university, comparable to a Master’s degree. 3. Those who have a Master’s degree or professional degree, or are expected to receive such a degree by March 2021, from a foreign educational institution in Japan which has a graduate course conforming to the educational system of the relevant country and is accredited by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. 4. Those who have completed a course of study at the United Nations University and have received a Master’s degree or equivalent or those who are expected to receive the degree by September 2020(for admission in October 2020) or by March 2021 (for admission in April 2021). 5. Those who have undertaken a course of study at a foreign educational institution, an educational institution as designated under item 3, or the United Nations University, and have passed the examinations stipulated in Article 16 (2) of the Standards for Establishment of Graduate Schools, or equivalent examinations, and have been deemed to possess an -1-
academic ability equivalent to or greater than that of a Master’s degree. 6. Those who hold a Master’s degree or who are expected to complete a Master’s degree at a non-partner university by the end of September 2020 (for admission in October 2020) or by the end of March 2021 (for admission in April 2021) and were recommended by a faculty member of Kochi University (exchange faculty member) who has engaged in joint research, etc. (3) Health: Those who are mentally and physically in good health. (4) Language ability: Those who have sufficient English or Japanese proficiency. (5) Arrival in Japan: Those who are able to arrive in Japan between October 1 and 5, 2020 (for admission in October 2020) or between April 1 and 3, 2021(for admission in April 2021). Notes: (1) Military personnel and civilian employees of armed forces are not eligible. (2) If successful applicants are unable to arrive in Japan by the designated date, the offer of admission shall be withdrawn. (3) If applicants fail to graduate from their prospective university by September 2020 (for admission in October 2020) or by March 2021 (for admission in April 2021), their enrollment shall be cancelled. 5. LIST OF DOCUMENTS FOR APPLICATION (1) Application form (Form A). (2) Application form (Form B). (3) A certified copy of the applicant’s university graduation certificate from the last school attended, prospective university graduation certificate, or an academic degree. (4) A certified transcript of the applicant’s academic records from the last school attended, and the English translation issued by the university concerned. (5) Transcripts which show that the applicant demonstrated excellent ability at his/her last university (a specific indication on the transcript, such as GPA, A・B・C (grade), rank (out of the total number of students), etc.). (6) A certified copy of the applicant’s birth and family records, citizenship, etc. (7) An agreement written by a prospective supervisor as listed in the Fields of Instruction and Professors (pp. 5–7) (e-mail copy is acceptable). (8) Those who are eligible under “4. ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS (2) 6” must submit a letter of recommendation (free format) written by an exchange faculty member. (9) An abstract of the applicant’s master’s thesis or equivalent (up to 4 pages, A4 size). If an applicant is not required by the university concerned to submit a master’s thesis, he or she should make a statement to that effect and describe any research work undertaken (up to 4 A4 pages). If applicable, an applicant should submit their publications (copies are acceptable). (10) A letter of recommendation (Form C) written by the Dean of the applicant’s university, or written by the head of the division concerned with the applicant. Applicants are also encouraged to attach references from their supervisor or an equivalent person who knows both the applicant and his or her work and academic career very well. (11) A certificate of health (to be completed by an examining physician) (Form D) (12) Three photographs (6×4 cm, no hat, full-faced photograph taken within six months prior to the date of application): one of the photographs should be attached to the designated space on the application form, and the remaining two should be enclosed therein, with the applicant’s nationality and name written on the reverse side. (13) The application fee is 30,000 yen and should be paid in cash or by a postal money order when the application form is submitted. (Exemption from paying the entrance examination fee applies to those who will graduate from the master’s course or the first term of the doctoral course at Kochi University in September 2020 -2-
(candidates who want to enter the second term of the doctoral course at Kochi University in October 2020), or in March 2021 (candidates who want to enter the doctoral course at Kochi University in April 2021). Notes: (1) All documents for application should be filled out in English or Japanese and be typewritten and double spaced on A4 paper. (2) Applicants should discuss their research plan for the program [directly via email] with their prospective supervisor at the Graduate School of Kuroshio Science, Kochi University before application. The Screening Committee will not consider an applicant eligible for admission if they do not have a proposed supervisor. Applicants should choose a supervisor from the Fields of Instruction and Professors (pp. 5-7). (3) Submitted applications that do not contain all of the required documents will be rejected. (4) The application documents received by Kochi University will not be returned. In addition, the application fee is not refundable. (5) The letter of recommendation and reference(s) should include an indication of whether the applicant’s English and Japanese proficiency is excellent, good, or fair, respectively. 6. PAYMENT OF ENTRANCE FEE AND TUITION FEE (1) Application fee: 30,000 yen* Exemption from paying the entrance examination fee will apply to those who will graduate from the master’s course or the first term of the doctoral course at Kochi University in September 2020 (candidates who want to enter the second term of the doctoral course at Kochi University in October 2020), or in March 2021 (candidates who want to enter the doctoral course at Kochi University in April 2021). (2) Entrance fee: 282,000 yen* Successful candidates must pay by the following date: For admission in October 2020: by September 16, 2020 (those who are expected to complete a Master’s degree at Kochi University by the end of September 2020 do not have to pay this fee) For admission in April 2021: by March 5, 2021 (those who are expected to complete a Master’s degree at Kochi University by the end of March 2021 do not have to pay this fee) (3) Tuition fee for one year: 535,800 yen*. The fee may be paid in two installments: 267,900 yen* for the first semester and 267,900 yen* for the second semester. *If the amount of fees or payments changes, the revised examination fee, entrance fee or tuition fee shall apply. 7. BENEFITS (1) Depending on their economic situation, students may be exempt from the full amount or half the amount of the tuition fee. (2) The Japan Student Services Organization will bear 35% of the cost of medical treatment. (3) Several scholarships (other than the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship) are available. Students are encouraged to apply. (4) The International House of Kochi University is available for accommodation for newly arrived overseas students. Tenants are selected by a committee. Those who are not admitted as tenants in the International House of Kochi University must find a private apartment, which currently has a monthly rental charge of about 40,000 yen. -3-
8. SCREENING AND ACCEPTANCE (1) The Screening Committee decides acceptance or rejection of applicants based on the documents submitted. (2) Notification of admission will be sent to applicants by the end of July (for admission in October 2020) or the beginning of January to mid-February (for admission in April 2021). (3) If any statement on the application form or related documents is ascertained to be false, the Screening Committee reserves the right to withdraw any offer of admission even after enrollment. 9. SUGGESTION Overseas students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with Japan’s climate, customs, weather and university situation before coming to Japan. Although students can use English in classes and carrying out research on campus, they will need to use the Japanese language in daily life. Therefore, students are expected to have sufficient conversational ability in Japanese. 10. SUBMISSION AND INQUIRIES Applicants are requested to submit the documents listed in 5. [Fields of Instruction and Professors] The principal objective of the comprehensive, interdisciplinary Kuroshio Science course is the education through integrating and providing an overall perspective of a number of specialist fields. The course focuses on resources, environment and society, medical health science, food and nursing pertaining to the extensive regions and marine areas (hereinafter, Kuroshio Region) extending from the countries of Southeast Asia to Northeast Asia and Japan. Kuroshio Science aspires to promote education and capable people in the following ways. ・ To train researchers and educators to possess a high level of expertise in their respective fields as well as knowledge of and perspective on different fields ・ To train new types of researchers and educators who gain an understanding of the new concept that is Kuroshio Science and possess a broad global perspective ・ To provide capable people who lay a foundation based on Kuroshio Science with a broad global perspective, as well as who can play an active part in regional industry and the business community ・ To implement the fine tuning of education through challenging research and education for active members of society at all levels In order to realize the objectives for education and research, Kuroshio Science course is composed of academic members with a variety of research fields, as listed below.
