SAHRA (via website, 19 March 2018): A Palaeontological Impact Assessment was The SAHRA Archaeological, Palaeontological and undertaken by Professor Marion Bamford. The Meteorites (APM) Unit requests that a desktop outcome of this assessment was that there is no chance Palaeontological Assessment must be completed as of finding fossils because the rocks are too old for body the development is located in an area of moderate fossils. Taking account of the defined criteria, the potential impact to fossil heritage resources is zero. As far as the palaeontology is concerned the project may proceed. SANParks (via email, 14 May 2018): According to the Marakele National Park: Park The areas highlighted for development falls under Management Plan 2014 – 2024 the areas highlighted remote zone and the suggested additional for development do not fall under the remote zone but development will have ecological implication. rather the primitive zone. The general characteristics of the primitive zone are described as generally retaining wilderness qualities. The objectives of this zone is to have limits of acceptable change. Deviation from a natural/pristine state should be small and limited to restricted impact footprints. Existing impacts should be reduced. Any facilities constructed in these areas, and activities undertaken here should be done in a way that limits environmental impacts. Road and infrastructure specifications should be designed to limit impacts. The type and size of facilities allowed includes facilities designed for high levels of luxury, but with limited visitor numbers that can be accommodated (e.g. controlled access private camps or concession sites). Vehicular access is limited to low-spec roads, often high ground clearance or 4x4. Tourist and game viewing roads are mostly high ground clearance or 4x4. Taking into account the above the Proposed Development of New Access Roads, Staff Accommodation and Tourist Facilities within the Marataba Section of the Marakele National Park are aligned with the use zoning objectives according to the Marakele National Parks Management Plan 2014- 2024. See section 9 Activity Motivation in the BAR for further details on this matter. A meeting has been set up between the EAP and SANParks on the 15 June 2018 to discuss this matter further. Various Marataba Trails Lodge Staff Members (via EAP has noted concerns of staff members. See letters email, 11 May 2018): in Appendix E.7. Submitted letters of concern with regards the existing Staff Accommodation conditions at the Trails Lodge. 19
