National Facilitator Kathy Benn Kathy is the current dietitian representative for ANZMOSS board members and principal dietitian for BENN-efit Nutrition. Kathy began her career in hospitals, then moved into private practice clinics a decade ago. During this time, she refined her skills in clinical nutrition, and spent time as an Accredited Sports Dietitian. These days she found her niche in weight loss surgery and disordered eating behaviours, and recently became Dietitian Representative on the Australia New Zealand Metabolic Obesity Surgical Society (ANZMOSS) board in 2019. Consolidating the range of previous nutritional training with knowledge gained from returning to study a Bachelor of Psychology, Kathy aims to incorporate them to clarify the science of mixed messages in a noisy health and wellness industry. Kathy often presents to various groups on a range of nutrition topics and is on the organising committee for ANZMOSS conferences and roadshows. Speakers Biographies Fiona Sammut – Accredited Practicing Dietitian Fiona Sammut has been an Accredited Practicing Dietitian for 23 years starting her career at Austin Health working in a wide range of clinical areas, and as Deputy Manager of the Nutrition Department for 15 years. Fiona has worked in both public and private services specialising in weight management and has been part of the team at Darebin Weight Loss Surgery for the last 16 years. Over these years Fiona has supported thousands of bariatric surgery clients over their weight loss and health management journeys and has developed a vast experience of all aspects of bariatric surgery nutrition management. Fiona has a special interest in micronutrient management and pregnancy following bariatric surgery and is very passionate about patient centred approach to client management. Fiona is a member of ANSMOSS and has presented and participated in many conferences and professional development seminars. Fiona welcomes opportunities to share and collaborate with other colleagues to continually improve the experience and health of our clients. Dr. Edo Aarts – Bariatric Surgeon and Medical Director After completing medical school in 2008, Dr Aarts commenced his PhD research at Rijnstate Hospital, Netherlands titled "Results and Complications of Bariatric Surgery". Completing in 2014, his thesis contained 15 original publications. Many of these reported on micronutrient deficiencies after bariatric surgery. To date, Dr Aarts has published 70 articles in peer reviewed journals and his international experience and credibility in the field of bariatrics allows him to be serving member of the Editorial Board of Obesity Surgery. Dr Aarts started as a surgical resident at the Radboud University and Rijnstate Hospital, the largest bariatric centre in the Netherlands with over 1,200 cases each year. During his residency, Dr Aarts was also head of the Bariatric Research Department at Rijnstate Hospital. This research department focused its work mainly around micronutrient deficiency prevention and treatment. Now a surgeon with over 1,000 bariatric surgical cases completed, Dr Aarts is in the process of opening his own bariatric surgical centre. Additionally, Dr Aarts serves as the Medical Director at Allurion Kliniek.
Annemarie Hindle – Research Officer and Clinical Psychologist Annemarie is a clinical psychologist working in private practice at the Centre for Eating, Weight, and Body Image in Melbourne. She primarily works with those experiencing eating, body image, and weight related concerns and pre- and post-bariatric surgery patients. Annemarie is also a researcher and research supervisor in the psychology departments of La Trobe and Australian Catholic Universities. Annemarie’s areas of research interest include predictors of weight and quality of life outcomes after bariatric surgery, dieting behaviours after bariatric surgery, measurement of adaptive and maladaptive eating after bariatric surgery and general eating disorder research. Merril Bohn – Accredited Practising Dietitian Merril has been working in the area of Bariatric surgery as part of her clinical dietetic work for over 25 years. She has extensive experience in the area of gastric bands, sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. As the first Allied Health dietitian representative on the ANZMOSS Board, Merril has been instrumental in getting the Bariatric Dietitians together and establishing both networking and clinical programs at ANZMOSS conferences. Merril is a sought-after speaker on bariatric nutrition and an active member of the DAA Obesity Interest Group. She maintains her interest and expertise in this area and continues to mentor dietitian’s starting out in this specialty.
Associate Professor Ken Sikaris – Director of Chemical Pathology, Melbourne Pathology A science and medical graduate of the University of Melbourne graduate, Dr Sikaris trained at the Royal Melbourne, Queen Victoria, Prince Henry's and Heidelberg Repatriation Hospitals. He obtained fellowships from the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA), the Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists (FAACB) and the RCPA Faculty of Science (FFSc) in 1992, 1997 and 2011 respectively. Dr Sikaris was appointed Director of Chemical Pathology at St Vincent's Hospital in 1993 and Medical Director of Dorevitch Pathology in 1998 before starting at Melbourne Pathology in 2003. He specialises in Prostate Specific Antigen, cholesterol and quality assurance but has a broad interest in blood testing. Ken is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology at Melbourne University and lectures to undergraduates, GPs and a variety of specialist groups across Australia and overseas. He has hundreds of publications and holds several international committee roles particularly in the field of interpretation, reference intervals and clinical decision limits. At Melbourne Pathology he is responsible for the biochemical testing of thousands of patients every day and is constantly called on to support clinicians by discussing the clinical appropriateness and interpretation of laboratory tests. Daniella DiBenedetto –Dietitian, PhD Candidate Daniella has a master’s degree in nutrition and Dietetics, a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science and a Graduate Diploma in Exercise and Sports Science. She is a member of Dietitians Australia and ANZMOSS and has been an Accredited Practicing Dietitian for 16 years while actively working in many facets of dietetics. Daniella is also an academic, with a history of lecturing in the Biomedical Science department at Swinburne University in Melbourne and was the recipient of the 2015 Deans Award For Teaching and Learning. Daniella’s interests lie in clinical dietetics, in particular Bariatrics, where she is currently a reviewer for the Obesity Surgery Journal. She is about to embark on a PhD researching the dynamics of glucose variability using Continuous Glucose Monitoring technology, post RYGB surgery.
