Annual Spring Conference and Awards Banquet Fanshawe College April 21, 2012 - Presents
Welcome to the 2012 Conference and Awards Banquet!
Our conference format has changed this year, as we are combining our annual half-day
conference and “Spring Fling” awards banquet. We have an exciting event planned for
everyone, including a variety of break-out sessions, our Annual General Meeting, a
plenary presentation by Judy Thompson, a Publishers’/Exhibitors’ display, and our
awards banquet which will be held at the The Oasis, and catered by the Fanshawe
Student Union.

Our theme for this year’s conference is “Springing Forward”. The theme is meant to
encourage our members to think about their future directions in this ever-changing field,
whether that be through learning new skills, career changes, or personal growth.

Our “Springing Forward” logo was designed by Melissa Smith (also one of our
presenters this year). Melissa has captured the idea of growth and flexibility in the
stems of the flowers which are depicted as springs, as well as the Spring season that is
currently upon us. The leaves from the TESL London logo on top of the springs
represent our members, and the connection between each stem depicts how growth
does not only take place individually, but also collectively as a group. Lastly, the three
primarily colours used in the logo are the basis of all creativity, and also represent the
variety of cultures that are present in both our affiliate and our classrooms.

Please refer to our website at www.tesllondon.org for registration information, and don’t
forget to submit your nominations for this year’s awards by April 6, 2012.

We hope that you enjoy the conference we have planned for you this year, and look
forward to seeing you in April!

Annual Spring Conference and Awards Banquet Fanshawe College April 21, 2012 - Presents
Break-Out Sessions (8:30 to 9:30 a.m.)
A1 - How to Create a Successful ESL/LINC Open House for the Public – Karen Elliott
and Milka Stupar

Many organizations want to have their programs in the public eye but aren't sure how to go
about it successfully. An Open House is one way of getting information to the people in your
city. After a successful Open House this past fall, Karen and Milka have the necessary
information to go about promoting and executing a rewarding day for both instructors and
students.

Karen is finishing up her first year of teaching and teaches in level 4/5 this year.
This is Milka's 3rd year as an instructor teaching levels 2/3.

A2 - Evaluating Grammar Activities: The E-Factor and the A-Factor - Dianne Tyers

In his book How to Teach Grammar Scott Thornbury presents two criteria for evaluating
grammar exercises and lessons: the E-factor and the A-factor. The E-factor refers to
efficiency and the A-factor refers to appropriacy. In this interactive workshop we will work
with these two factors to evaluate sample grammar activities for use in our language
classrooms. For activities that don’t satisfy the E-factor and the A-factor we will discuss how
to make adaptations. At the end of this workshop participants will be able to use the E-factor
and the A-factor to make good decisions when selecting grammar activities for their students.

Dianne owns Advance Consulting for Education, INC, Canada's leading provider of English
language teacher training. She has a Masters of Applied Linguistics and an MBA.

A3 - Integrating PowerPoint into your Lesson Plan – Melissa Smith

Transform pen & paper lessons into engaging interactive works of art! From basic layout to
advanced animations, learn how to WOW your students (and yourself!) Explore PowerPoint's
limitless possibilities in design and media and create masterpieces you will look forward to
sharing with your students!

Melissa has been teaching at London Language Institute since June 2009 and has helped
implement their new technology-based curriculum including multimedia PowerPoint and
whiteboard software.

A4 - The English Phonetic Alphabet Workbook - Judy Thompson

Publisher's workshop showcasing a collection of photocopiable L/S exercises to complement
Chapter One of English is Stupid. The workshop includes a unique collection of copy-and-go
activities that makes teaching easier for instructors and speaking easier for students. The
goal of the exercises, the workbook and the workshop is to provide a framework for
transforming students’ ability to speak English outside the classroom.

Author of 'English is Stupid' and the EPA Workbook, Judy Thompson is a TEDx speaker, an
expert on pronunciation and a teacher trainer at OISE

A5 - Teaching Here and There - Theresa Hyland

Horner, DeCamp and Donahue (2011) argue that in a global world we need to advance
composition scholarship toward a translingual norm. In this presentation, Theresa Hyland will
discuss a collaborative research project in which she was able to compare the classroom
strategies, faculty perceptions and administrative barriers to curriculum development that
exist in our own, Canadian system and in an education system situated in a very different
geographical and cultural context. By comparing the two systems that serve very different
populations in terms of culture, academic goals, and expectations of students, she hopes to
develop a set of best practices in writing instruction that would be applicable to both.

A6 - LEAP: Learning Skills Necessary to Thrive in an Academic World - Rita Leithead

LEAP (Learning English for Academic Purposes) is the highly anticipated second release of
Pearson ELT Canada's most popular EAP textbook. Available in two strands:
Reading/Writing and Listening/Speaking, LEAP can also be used in an integrated
environment through eight linked academic themes.

See how students will learn to develop skills needed to thrive in a real-life academic context,
while developing academic vocabulary in a range of disciplines and applying critical-thinking
skills to a variety of global issues. Challenging texts and tasks call for students to reflect
critically on the learning content.

Rita Leithead, a former ESL Instructor and Supervisor of Technical Training, is now the
Senior Sales Consultant in Ontario for Pearson ELT (formerly Pearson Longman). Rita has
been with Pearson ELT for over eight years
Our Plenary (10:45 to 11:45 a.m.)
Turn! Turn! Turn!

Pete Seeger then The Byrds made famous a biblical passage, "Turn! Turn! Turn! To
Everything There Is a Season" and for ESL the season is Spring. The transition from the
short dark cold days of winter to a season of rebirth, renewal and growth are upon us.
Change isn’t always fun or easy. We can postpone it but never get rid of it. Let’s Spring
Forward together and embrace this new season in the exciting ever-changing world of
teaching ESL.

Presented by Judy Thompson, a professor, author of “English is Stupid” and the “English
Phonetic Alphabet Workbork”, and professional speaker dedicated to teaching international
students to speak English and teaching native speakers not confuse them.

With a B.A. in English and TESL certification she began her ESL teaching career with LINC
then taught for the Peel Board of Education for 10 years.

Inspired to improve speaking programs Judy designed “Speaking Canadian English” that has
been taught at Sheridan College since 2005. The textbook for the course is “English is
Stupid” and it is based on the differences between written and spoken English.

“English is Stupid” was been warmly received by the ESL community in 20 countries. The
media has also embraced the program with interviews on CBC, Toronto Star and a TEDx
video on YouTube to name a few.

A new book, the “English Phonetic Alphabet Workbook” was launched in Toronto in October,
a new curriculum and a sound dictionary will be available in 2012. From Windsor to Ottawa
Judy trains teachers in an effective new way to teach people how to speak English
confidently.
