Understanding men: initiation and resonance
Bill Rumble returns to conference by popular demand with a presentation on understanding men via
initiation. In Bill’s experience asking a male patient how he feels often generates a lack of response
accompanied by a mild form of shock followed by a simple request for a treatment for indigestion.
The male patient may even be eager to please and respond with a prefabricated emotional testimony
that lacks any sense of ‘real.’ Bill has found it more effective to actually ask the patient ‘what
happened?’ This allows a narrative to unfold which is animated by powerful experiences and
enlivened by physical sensations and visualisations. What is being told is a story of initiation, maybe
intense and life changing, similar to an earthquake or a flood, or maybe just a small tremor that has
rattled the patient. As men we generally experience initiation in the world, outside ourselves, outside
our bodies. Bill will look at the dynamics of initiation as an event that alters the ‘tunement’ of the life
force and activates the ‘symptom creator’ as a communication system. Bill will continue the journey
by exploring the concept of resonance; symptoms come from an unknown part of ourselves. Our
project in each individual case is to tune in to the ‘presence’ of the unknown; the realm of the
symptom creator; to set up an information channel. To do this we must abandon what we know;
about men and women and most of all we must abandon our desire for meaning.
