WELCOME TO THE 1st FILIPINO FESTIVAL AND FLORES DE MAYO AT THE MISSION! Malugod na pagbati at ang kapayapaan ni Kristo ay sumainyo. (Welcome and peace of Christ be with you) I wish to extend a very warm welcome to all who have come to celebrate this day with us. I was very happy when the Filipino community came to us and offered to do so some fund raising for the SMA Fathers here in Tenafly. They said they would organize everything. This is the finished product of their labors. When they chose to center the event around the festival of Flores de Mayo I researched on the festival. This festival is for honoring Mary during the month of May. Special interest is on the Im- maculate Conception. The tradition goes back to the time when the dogma of the Immaculate Conception was first proclaimed in 1854. This significant to the SMA Fathers Our founder, Melchior de Marion Brésillac, went to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière in Lyon, France on December 8, 1856 (feast of the Im- maculate Conception) to dedicate his new community to the Immaculate Conception. He wished that all his endeavors and those of this Mission Society be under the protection and guidance of Mary, Our Blessed Mother. This Society has been in existence for as long as the celebra- tions of Flores de Mayo! Also of note, since May 18, 2001 we have had a structural represen- tation in the Philippines which reached out to the Filipino Church in its desire to go to the most abandoned of Africa. So in a very real way this day is a celebration of our mutual bond and acknowledgement of our catholicity. Truly, " In Christ there is no East or West, in him no South or North, but one great fellowship of love throughout the whole wide earth." I thank you for coming and cele- brating with us this day. May the joy of these activities move you to a greater appreciation of God present in our daily activities. Take in all the magnificent colors, smells, dances and ex- pressions of culture that are presented this day. I am deeply grateful to all who put in so much effort in the planning of this beautiful day. I am sure it will be a wonder filled day. God Bless you all. Fr. Michael Moran, SMA Provincial-American Province.
Flores de Mayo at Santacruzan During the month of May, in the tropical islands of the Philippines, the fra- grance of flowers float in the air. When the rains begin to pour after a long dry spell, flowers magically bloom over night. And being predominantly Catholic, the Filipinos celebrate the beautiful rains by giving praise to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The town folks gather the colorful flowers to decorate the parish church altars and aisles. They bundle the blooms in exotic arrangements for the many different festivities altogether referred to as the “ Flores de Mayo” (Flowers of May) Many towns celebrate “Flores de Mayo” with the community congregating in the afternoon to pray the rosary, offer flowers to the Virgin Mary and share home- made delicacies. Children and adults wearing their Sunday best sing and dance to welcome the rains that will water the new crop. Santacruzan is a religious – historical beauty pageant throughout the Philip- pines during the month of May. Santacruzan is one of the most colorful May time festival in the Philippines. The festivity commemorates the search for the Holy Cross by Queen Helena and her son, the newly converted emperor Constantine. After the Holy Cross was found in Jerusalem and brought back to Rome, there was joyful celebration and thanksgiving. Santacruzan is considered to be the “ Queen of Filipino Festivals” It is a week- long street pageant in almost every town from the dirt road barrio to the me- tropolis honoring beautiful Philippine maidens and their handsome escorts under hand- carried bamboo arcs decorated with fragrant native flowers. The procession is always the final part of the festival of “ Flores de Mayo”
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS 3:30 PM Flores de Mayo Procession and Rosary Floral Offering to the Blessed Mother 4:30 PM Holy Mass 5:30: Fiesta Celebration Food, Parade, Songs, Raffles, Chinese Auction and Dances: Tinikling - The name is a reference to birds locally known as tikling. The term tinikling literally means tikling like. The dance is an imitation of tikling birds dodging bamboo traps set by farmers in the rice fields. Dancers imitate the birds legendary grace and speed by skillfully maneu- vering between large bamboo poles. Malong — It is also called Sambi sa Malong. This Maranao dance shows the many ways of wearing a malong, a simple tubular yet highly functional piece of cloth. The tradi- tional women’s version shows this cloth of colorful designs. Sinulog — Sinulog es annual festival held on the third Sunday of January in Cebu city in the Philippines. Its origin dates back in the year 1521 when a Portuguese navigator Fer- dinand Magellan placed a croos onb the shores of Cebu and claimed the territory in the name of the king of Spain. He offered the image of the child Jesus (Santo Nino) as a baptismal gift to the rule’s wife. Hundreds of natives were also baptized to the Chris- tian faith along with the rules of the island. At the moment of receiving the image, it was said that the Queen danced with joy holding the image of the child Jesus. Natives followed her example this moment was considered the first Sinolug. The dance is ac- companied by the sound of the drums shouting petitions and thanksgiving to the Santo Nino. Harana—Harana is an old Filipino courtship tradition of serenading women. It is mostly practiced in rural areas and small towns,. The man usually accompanied by his close friends, goes to the house of the woman he is courting and plays music and sings love songs to her.

"Lupang Hinirang" Philippine Hymn (English Version) Composed by Julian Felipe on By Camilo Osias and A. L. Lang June 12, 1898 > Land of the morning Child of the sun returning Bayang magiliw, perlas ng silanganan. With fervor burning Alab ng puso, sa dibdib mo'y buhay. Thee do our souls adore. Lupang hinirang, duyan ka ng magiting Land dear and holy, Sa manlulupig, di ka pasisiil. Cradle of noble heroes, Sa dagat at bundok, sa simoy at Ne'er shall invaders Trample thy sacred shores. sa langit mong bughaw, may dilag ang tula at awit Ever within thy skies and through thy clouds And o'er thy hills and seas; sa paglayang minamahal. Do we behold thy radiance, feel the throb Ang kislap ng watawat mo'y Of glorious liberty. tagumpay na nagniningning. Thy banner dear to all hearts Ang bituin at araw niya Its sun and stars alight, kailan pa may di magdidilim. Oh, never shall its shining fields Be dimmed by tyrant's might. Lupa ng araw, ng lualhati't pagsinta, Beautiful land of love, O land of light, buhay ay langit sa piling mo. In thine embrace 'tis rapture to lie; Aming ligaya na pag may mang-aapi, But it is glory ever, when thou art wronged ang mamatay ng dahil sa iyo For us, thy sons to suffer and die. The U.S. National Anthem "The Star Spangled Banner", Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence re- poses, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half dis- closes? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream: 'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion, A home and a country should leave us no more! Their blood has washed out of of their foul footsteps' pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave' From the terror of flight and the gloom of the grave: And the star- spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved home and the war's desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust." And the star- spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
