HEADWATERS.CA The People Have Posted. If you want to see yourself as you really are, they say, let a stranger show you. We did. And here it is. For the past few years, we’ve been trying to convey the pull of this no-longer-hidden treasure called Headwaters, a billowing horse blanket of hills, lakes, rambling farms and storybook villages, to people hungry for the undiscovered and unspoiled. And boy, have you responded. Not just with your feet, but with your tweets, likes, loves, snaps, grams, tags, and words. Posting poets, you are. We’re so impressed that this year, you’re the Guide. And we’ve mapped out the itinerary the same way you seem to love doing it: town by town, region by region, hill by hill. Because Headwaters is the perfect size for a day-or-two-trip, where you can collect as many Welcome To signs as you’ve got room for in your head and your hard drive. Although the drive up here is anything but hard. So here we go. Let’s share the driving. Let’s go where we both want. Let’s collect towns and tastes, fill the trunk and empty our cares, and trade notes at the end of where we end up. We think it might be someplace called real. 3

CALEDON ESSENTIAL EXCURSION Cheltenham Badlands Q &A Gail Winters, Co-Founder GoodLot Farmstead Brewing Company, Caledon #caledon #farmraisedbeer #drinklocal Despite the craft beer craze, hops aren’t new to Ontario? Hops were a very prolific crop here. If you drive through old tobacco country you’ll still see some remnants of old oast* houses. But between prohibition and disease the industry got driven out west, where it’s more arid. Why did you choose hops? We didn’t want to do the big three, canola, corn, soy. My partner Phil and I are both avid craft beer drinkers. So we planted our first stock in the spring of 2011. It takes three years to get your full yield. MONO of Newmarket is one of the best places in the world to WEST lose yourself for day or a lifetime: tiny, hilly, real-country Mono. Squeeze into a cave at Mono Cliffs Provincial Park that suddenly reveals a sun-soaked natural chapel. Pick an ancient farm to live on for pretend or real: there’s lots. Fill your lungs with some of Ontario’s highest elevation air. Then marvel at how this tiny enclave holds some of Canada’s best restaurants and watering holes. Where you’ll plot your escape of course. Come hide in Mono, we won ’ t tell a soul. Photo by: James MacDonald The foliage at Mono Cliffs Provincial Park is known to produce zen-like calm and even joy — as well as fiery debate, if not prose. Some argue that the panorama from Cliff Top Hill’s edge-jutting platform is “heaven for leaf peepers.” Others insist Lookout Trail is not just the best view of all, but “as if you’ve stepped into a painting.” But all agree that Mono, as a sensory symphony, is definitely in stereo. 28

SHELBURNE of Mount Forest is a place you hear well before you see. As EASt Ontario’s fastest-growing town, sleepy Shelburne is abuzz with the sounds of an old town getting new blood. SHELBURNE ESSENTIAL EXCURSION Heritage Music Festival / Pickin’ In The Park Q &A Andrew James, Co-Founder STREAMS Community Hub, Shelburne #passion #potential #futureleaders The idea for STREAMS began how? I used to host a monthly talent show at a local church, and a lot of young people who came to that show went off to do some very cool things. I felt I might have a knack for bringing the best out of young people, and I had a vision for creating a place and a space for young people to create. When we moved to Shelburne, I deliberately looked through the eyes of a young person seeking something to do — multimedia, graphic arts, dramatic arts — those outlets.
