An Exploration of the Astrological Chart of the United States: 2021-2025

Preamble
In my preparation for the Shamanic Astrology Mystery School’s (SAMS) 2017 online summit Preparing
for 2020: Seeding a New World, my focus was primarily on the greater global cycles impacting all of
humanity. By all counts, it was obvious that something extraordinary was going to occur in 2020. During
those presentations, as well as in a variety of other seminars, Vlogcasts, and Facebook posts since, I
have weighed-in on a number of important features specific to the chart of the United States (US). This
article is an attempt to further build upon the established foundation and to provide a more
comprehensive account of the influences and experiences we might expect for the US in its near future.
I will cover the major astrological cycles that will impact the US chart between now and 2025, the
eclipse cycles starting with the spring/summer of 2021, and the distinct turning point we are now in with
respect to several rhythms, or cycles, known to shift the tides of human history.

I believe we have entered into a truly remarkable and unprecedented time on this planet. Based on the
combination of events described below we could find ourselves, within a few short years, living in a very
different “middle world” reality than the one we now know.
Whether this new reality appeals to us, or amounts to our
worst nightmare, is only partly in our hands. To have
foreknowledge of the upcoming astrological events and
influences and their potential intent is, based on my many
decades of experience in working with clients, the most
optimal basis for participating with full awareness in the
energies at hand.

With respect to an accurate casting of the US chart, I
continue to return to Dane Rudhyar’s rectification of July 4,
1776 as the most useful and valuable when using the lens of
the Shamanic Astrology Paradigm™. In addition, I will as
much as possible use a “three worlds approach” (articulated
below) in presenting the material I’m sharing here.

Upcoming Major Astrological Cycles of Impact
2021: Three Major Cycles
    1. Transiting Saturn conjunct the US South Node at 6° Aquarius 35’: from Feb 3, 2021 - Oct 11,
         2021
This transit can only occur once every 29.5 years and, as with all Saturn transits, lasts about nine
months. Saturn initiations teach us how to grow, change, and evolve via limitations and boundaries.
Applying this to the US, I like to think of this initiation as a referendum on the country’s past history and
responsibilities. Through the lens of Shamanic Astrology™ (SA), the lineage of the US is the Gemini job in
the Aquarius tribe. This is strongly related to the original intent of the US founding fathers: freedom,
egalitarianism, a belief in intellect and rationality, as well as sovereignty and autonomy (not to be
confused with democracy). The inquiry revolves around the Aquarian shadow issues I have been writing
and speaking about for four years now. Are we dealing with Saturn controlling Aquarius, in a top-down

way, or is the prompt we’re being given instead to look toward authentic Aquarius and the original
ideals?

    2. Transiting Lunar Nodes conjunct the US DSC/ASC Axis of 13° Sagittarius/Gemini 10’: Dec 26,
        2020 - Jun 26, 2021
This transit can only occur once every 19 years (or 9.5 years if the alignment is the North Node with the
ASC). The transit timeframe is generally about six months, with three months on either side of the
March 26th exact alignment. I have found this transit to be one of the most beneficial transits possible
when it comes to individual charts: universal intent aligns individual intent. In client work, I sometimes
say that this is the time when the future self reaches back to get our attention. In the case of the US, the
future point is the North Node aligned with the US DSC at 13° Gemini 10’. This can be understood as the
US looking for friends, allies, and collaborators. I have always felt that the strong Gemini element in the
US chart (including Mars and Uranus) is an active part of the country’s shadow. The US is infamous for
using, and even selling out, its friends and partners. Perhaps this alignment affords the chance for the
US to change the road it’s on. Let’s hope for an awakening here!

    3. Transiting Jupiter conjunct the US Moon at 27° Aquarius 12’ from Apr 16, 2021 - Dec 12,2021
This transit occurs about every 12 years. This cycle of initiation specifically applies to the US Moon
position, and highlights the entire lineage storyline as seen with the Saturn conjunction to the South
Node referenced above. Generally, the intent of a Jupiterian initiation is to expand and activate its
target. The expansion of its Aquarian Moon can, at best, ignite a soul retrieval of original intent for the
US. This could include a greater ability to see an objective and expanded view of US history and to
authentically address whether the intellectual ideals of the US founders—inspired by the European
Enlightenment of the 17th and 18th centuries—have been met. However, the expansion could also go
the other way: more pronounced cognitive dissonance, willful ignorance, light polarization, or some
other form of ‘toxic positivity.’ There is always a hopeful element in the mix when a nodal alignment is
immediately followed by a Jupiterian activation.

2022-2023: Two Major Cycles
     1. Transiting Saturn conjunct the US Moon at 27° Aquarius 12’ : Jun 4, 2022 - Feb 12, 2023
This transit occurs about every 30 years. This initiation, which specifically applies to the US Moon and
the lineage storyline of the US, is related to the above-noted Saturn conjunction to the South Node.
Saturn teaches us how to grow, change, and evolve via limitations and boundaries. I feel that this cycle is
yet another testing ground regarding whether the US has been in ‘right use’ of its Aquarius Moon
(meaning, the SA storyline of the Gemini job in the Aquarius tribe). At its worst, this is yet another
possible example of a top-down attempt by Saturn to control the ideals of Aquarius. In its shadow
expression, Aquarius becomes the totalitarianism side of collectivism, wherein egalitarian freedom
ideals are high-jacked for the ‘greater good.’ This sets the stage for the belief in trans-humanism,
artificial intelligence, and democracy to become the rule of the majority. These shadow tendencies
diverge significantly from the ideals of the founding fathers and the revolutionaries that led to the
creation of America. Most optimally, when paired with the earlier Saturn transit to the South Node, facts
and truth could become important once again. Objective reality could inspire a course correction that
resurfaces the original ideals of freedom, liberty, and individuality. How the US responds to this Saturn
transit will go a long way towards determining how the following two cycles will be experienced.

    2. United States Pluto Return at 27° Capricorn 32’: Jan 22, 2022 - Oct 11, 2023
For many astrologers, myself included, this is the big one. A Pluto return can only occur every 248 years,
therefore the furthest Pluto cycle an individual can conceivably experience (and only in certain

generations, based on Pluto’s orbit) is a Pluto opposition. Given the lifespan of a human being,
experiencing a Pluto return is impossible. A country, however, can ‘live’ long enough to experience a full
Pluto cycle and beyond.

The US will experience its Pluto return beginning in January of 2022. In addition, in the US natal Pluto
will be opposing Mercury retrograde in Cancer and squaring Chiron. Also of note is that the US has the
Sun, Jupiter, and Venus all in Cancer, in the 8th House.

 In the Shamanic Astrology Paradigm ™, Plutonian (and Chironic) initiations are seen as underworld or
lower world initiations. Pluto’s job is to compost whatever is decaying or already dead: everything that is
outmoded or worn will be composted. What can then emerge from this compost is new growth, new
life, a re-birth, or even a renaissance. Applying this globally, including beyond the US, the final few years
of Pluto in Capricorn can easily symbolize the death throes of patriarchy, hierarchical controls, and
rotten bureaucratic systems. Out of this can arise a new and re-animated version of the “Circle of
Grandmothers” and Council of Elders dedicated to honoring the remaining wisdom of the past, all the
way back to our matrilineal gatherer/hunter roots, along with the conception of new ways to care for
the future generations to come.

As I see it, this composting process must also include the ingredients embedded in the Kali Yuga (the
time nearing the completion of the descending phase of the Yuga Cycle doctrine, characterized as a
period when the proper order of human relations is reversed, wealth is coveted, falsity goes hand-in-
hand with success, sexuality is the primary form of human enjoyment, and religion has become an
empty ritual) and other historic texts granting humans “dominion over” the earth and its life forms and
resources. This is the attitude that is now ushering in what is referred to as the sixth mass extinction.
With successful disintegration of the old, there is the possibility of a resurgence and reanimation of a
shamanic, animistic awareness wherein humans participate in right relationship with the entire, vast
web of life. Without this lived awareness, human beings are in essence alien to their own planet.

2024-2025: One Major Cycle
    1. US Chiron Return at 20° Aries 08’: Apr 2024 - Feb 2025
Chiron returns happen approximately every 50 years, making this the US’s fifth return. As indicated
above, the Chiron placement on the US chart is connected to Pluto, as well as to the Cancerian positions
of the Sun and Mercury.

Chiron returns seem to have two primary functions: 1) to indicate where a specific wounding or fracture
point is located, and 2) to serve as a teaching/learning experience to aid in digesting and integrating the
wound, eventually transforming it into an elixir or personal ‘medicine.’ My sense is that this particular
Chiron return highlights one of the three main challenges of the US chart: the shadow side of Cancer
itself, which translates into provincialism, clannishness, and a disinterest in cultures other than its own.
A manifestation of this is the blindness inherent in the American assumption of exceptionalism, with
utter disregard for any objective evidence to the contrary. The less actualized expression of Cancer can
also include an attachment to sentimental notions of the past that actually never existed. Further, I
would be remiss here if I did not acknowledge the many imperialistic actions of the US, often packaged
under the guise of humanitarian endeavors and the exportation of democracy. This connects with the
Saturn transits to other planets in Aquarius, as outline above, revealing another of the shadow elements
of the US chart.

Chiron’s return to its natal location on the US chart compounds with the implications of the Pluto return.
It’s hard to not see this time period as a deep reckoning and referendum on the original intent and
promise of the American project.

From the Vantage Point of a Three Worlds Approach
When taking into account the larger global story, one cannot ignore the likelihood that something truly
extraordinary is currently taking place. Co-occurring events such as the bottoming-out of Kali Yuga; the
completion and beginning of a 25,920 year Precession of the Equinoxes cycle, or “Turning of the Ages”
(which by some reports could actually be the completion of the 12th of these precessional cycles—or
312,000 years—now estimated to the distance in the past that Homo sapiens sapiens first appeared on
Earth); the recent “great mutation” alignment of Jupiter and Saturn; and the “fourth turning” (more on
this later in this article) of the US, Europe, and even China, all weigh in at this auspicious time on planet
Earth. (Also see the 2021 Global Update I recorded with fellow Shamanic Astrologer Levi Banner on
March 19, 2021 https://vimeo.com/526425590/a04b0aa774 ).

When viewed through the perspective of a “three worlds approach”—upper, middle, and lower
worlds—we get a more nuanced picture of events that is in fact not all ‘doom and gloom’:

    1. Upper World (symbolized by the cycles of Uranus and Neptune): Through this lens, the universe
       is unfolding as it should and all is well. Gaia and Great Mystery are orchestrating the current
       events and for human beings, we are well-served to relax into the understanding that it is
       impossible to completely know the intent. If we can see and experience all that is happening
       from a healthy expression of objective awareness, as a high witness with a cosmic overview, it is
       then possible to hold a non-evaluative and non-judgmental stance in response to what is
       happening. This perspective includes knowing who we really are as sovereign and autonomous
       sparks of divinity or, said another way: as Atman within the Brahman. Toxic positivity and light
       polarization are not useful and only polarize the darkness.

    2. Middle World (symbolized by the cycles of Jupiter, Saturn, and the Lunar Nodes): This reality,
       where we humans dwell, requires a courageous ability and willingness to look directly at what is
       actually occurring in the world situation, including the amazing possibilities of transforming the
       world. We must also be willing to see the evil that can exist at the time of Kali Yuga and at any
       time of a Turning of the Ages. SA reminds us that it has never been more important than now to
       find your personal place on the wheel, to know your archetypes, and to show up
       wholeheartedly with your contribution. Be willing to inquire deeply into what it really means to
       be human and whether transhumanism—leading to “human 2.0”— is what you actually want.
       What is being sold to us as linear ‘progress’ could in fact be devolution. We need to look
       beyond mainstream information sources to grasp a fuller picture of what already is in the works
       and where it might be leading us.

    3. Lower World (symbolized by the cycles of Pluto and Chiron): My own take on this perspective is
       that it is important to include the possibility that the sixth mass extinction is natural and even
       inevitable. Current events could be a form of composting, based on similar patterns wherein
       autumn and winter naturally follow spring and summer. Surrender, and the chaos that can
       accompany it, is a completely natural occurrence. In this we find a link to the upper world
       perspective, namely, that it is critical that we connect with the essence of who we really are,
       extending beyond our accumulated knowledge, our experiential resumes, and whatever peak
       experiences we have accrued. We come to see that our frail ego identities are transitory and

        hold little truth or actual substance. At the same time, we are each here to play a unique and
        essential part.

The Shamanic Astrologer’s role is to communicate with Great Mystery in order to connect and align
with universal intent as an awakened, collaborative, and co-creative human. I like to say that we inform
the Great Mystery as much as it communicates with us. I offer here my own prayer that the suffering
that accompanies times like the one we are in will be as minimal as possible, while also knowing that we
cannot ultimately control the outcome, nor are we the prime causative reason for what is occurring.

Adding Eclipses to the Mix: A “Quadruple Cross” Pattern of Influence
The Eclipses of 2021
There are two eclipse seasons each year, occurring about six months apart. The first one in 2021 is from
May 26th through June 10th, featuring a total lunar eclipse followed by an annular solar eclipse. The
second eclipse season in this year is November 19th through December 4th with a partial lunar eclipse,
and then a total solar eclipse of nearly two minutes in duration. At least three of these four eclipses
appear to have strong connections with the US chart and can indeed foreshadow or presage the Pluto
and Chiron returns written about earlier in this article. They also contain strong relevance to the other
highlighted aspects of 2021.

Let’s look at these one at a time:
May 26th Lunar Eclipse: Although not directly visible in the US, the South Node at 10° Sagittarius 43’ is
nearly conjunct the US natal ASC. The Sun, at 5° Gemini 25’, is very close to the US Uranus position and
the Full Moon at 5° Sagittarius 25’ is also near the US ASC. The transiting nodal axis is in alignment with
the US DSC/ASC axis, which always signifies past and future destiny: a linkage between fate and original
intent. Meanwhile, during this first 2021 eclipse season, Saturn continues its transit to the US South
Node, and Jupiter continues its transit to the US Moon.

June 10th Annular Solar Eclipse: The path of this eclipse will sweep through Canada and only briefly
brush the edge of Northern Michigan. Annular solar eclipses are generally underrated in their impact,
however the alignment of Sun, Moon, and Earth (or syzygy) at an annular eclipse is as exact as with a
total solar eclipse. The difference is that the Moon’s distance at the time makes it not quite large
enough—from our visual vantage point on Earth—to cover the entire width of the Sun, creating a
unique ring-of-fire effect. At 19° Gemini 47’, this super new moon will also line up quite closely to the
US ASC/DSC axis of 13° Sagittarius/Gemini 10’, as well as form a close conjunction with the US natal
Mars. Transiting Mars recently passed over the US Mars (exact April 8, 2021 with a window of Mar 22nd
– Apr 24th when including 10° on either side) as well as the US Jupiter, Venus, Sun, and Mercury.

December 4th Total Solar Eclipse: Although not visible in the US, this eclipse is also quite fascinating
relative to the US chart. Happening at 12° Sagittarius 22’, the eclipse point is within one degree of the
US ASC at 13° Sagittarius 10.’ The North Node is 1° Gemini 44,’ marking this as a North Node, forward-
looking super new moon, as with the June 10th eclipse. Several alignments will cluster around the timing
of this second eclipse season of 2021, likely shaping the direction of the US path as the year comes to a
close. Transiting Pluto will close in on natal Pluto, the final hit of Saturn square Uranus will exact, and
Jupiter will make its final pass over the US Moon.

THE 2023 and 2024 ECLIPSE “TRIPLE CROSS”
The eclipse seasons of 2021 together with the Jupiter and
Saturn initiatory cycles to the US chart are mere
forerunners to what is to come. The rare convergence of
the upcoming eclipse seasons in 2023 and 2024 are among
the most remarkable phenomena that I have ever
encountered. Three different solar eclipses—two total and
one annular—will in the short space of seven years create a
pattern of three crosses over the continental US (illustrated
right).

We all remember the marvelous total solar eclipse of
August 21, 2017. A number of us in SAMS gathered in
Oregon to witness it. This eclipse, beginning at the 5:48 AM sunrise in the Pacific Ocean just west of
Portland, traversed the entirety of the continental US: originating in Oregon, it continued on through the
heart of America, and then exited over South Carolina into the Atlantic. Although lasting only a mere
two minutes and 40 seconds of totality, it was eagerly witnessed by many millions across the US, causing
quite a sensation. Chart-wise, this North Node eclipse took place at 28° Leo 50’, with the nodal axis at
24° Leo/Aquarius 13.’ This was in close opposition to the US Moon and South Node. Interesting to note
here is how connected this location is to Donald Trump’s ASC of 29° Leo and his Mars at 26° Leo.

From 2017 to 2023: Forming the First Cross
On October 14, 2023, an annular solar eclipse will arise
just after 6 AM PDT in a similar area of the Pacific
Ocean west of Oregon, traveling over Eugene and on
through parts of Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Texas, and
the Yucatan. From there, the path will extend through
areas of Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama,
Columbia, and finally the Brazilian Amazon, exiting the
land masses via the Atlantic Ocean. Some locations of
ancient and modern significance in the path of
annularity include Kayenta, Window Rock, Roswell, and
Los Alamos.

The location of this solar eclipse is 21° Libra 08’. It will
include over four minutes of annularity. Considered a
South Node eclipse (24° Aries/Libra 52’), the location is very close to the US Chiron and Saturn
positions. As well, at the time of the eclipse, Chiron will be at 17° Aries 31’. Of even greater potential
significance, at the time of the eclipse transiting Pluto (at 27° Capricorn 53’) will be squaring the US
nodes and in a near exact conjunction with the US Pluto (as noted above, the US begins its Pluto return
on January 22, 2022). The impact of transiting Pluto conjunct natal Pluto, for a country, may include an
orb of influence even wider than that generally used in the chart of an individual. In this case, the time
window for the US’s Pluto return could be even wider: beginning in 2021 and extending into 2024.

The two eclipse tracks (2017 and 2023) intersect just off the Oregon coast. This area holds a major fault
line, the source of massive tsunamis that inundated the Northern West coast as recently as several
hundred years ago.

The Second Cross: 2024
Back in 2017, it was pretty well known that the path of the eclipse would intersect with the path of a
future total eclipse of even greater duration (four minutes and 28 seconds) that would also traverse a
large portion of the continental US. Beginning on April 8th, 2024, at about 6:41 AM in the Pacific Ocean,
the path of totality will include Mexico (over places like Mazatlan and Durango) and then continue
through Texas, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Maine, and Northeastern
Canada, exiting from Nova Scotia into the North Atlantic. Many large cities will fall under the path of the
umbra. Quite likely, and with weather permitting, even larger crowds of enthusiasts than in 2017 will
witness this spectacular eclipse.

The second cross will occur over Carbondale, Illinois
within the vicinity of the much-written-about New
Madrid Seismic Zone. Located near the Mississippi
River, this was the location of the largest earthquake
in US history in 1812.

This 2024 North Node eclipse takes place at 19° Aries
24’, not far from the nodal axis at 15°
Aries/Libra37’and nearly precisely opposite the
degree of the 2023 eclipse. But what is incredible is
that the eclipse location is exactly conjunct Chiron at
19° Aries 24’! The US Chiron placement is 20° Aries
08’and at the time of this eclipse, America is in the
throes of its fifth Chiron return. It’s true what they
say: “You just can’t make this stuff up!” (A little further on, I have included the Sabian symbols for 20°
Aries.) A further punctuation point here is that the transiting South Node will also be conjunct the US
Saturn. Meanwhile, Pluto will have entered into Aquarius.

The Third Cross
Considerably less well-known at this point is the occurrence of a third cross. The path of the 2024 North
Node eclipse will cross the path of the 2023 eclipse in Texas, directly over San Angelo, a point very near
San Antonio. I am writing this article in May of 2021, a time when Texas is very significant in the primary
global narrative now unfolding. In considering the included diagram of the three crosses (above), notice
the shape these crosses make and any associated meaning that comes to mind. There are many clues.
It will certainly be interesting to see how this all unfolds.

And a Fourth Cross...
 An interesting add-on here, if we look even farther
back to May of 2012, the path of the annular eclipse
at that time is also crossed by the path of the 2023
eclipse, occurring over the US in the area of
Texas/New Mexico. When you consider that some
locations in the world can have as much as a 100-
year interval between ‘hits’ by the path of a solar
eclipse, the occurrence of four crosses over the US
within a 12-year span (or similarly, three crosses in
seven years) is rare.

THE “FOURTH TURNING”
To develop a larger context for understanding the potential meaning and intent of these events in
relation to the US chart, I now turn to what has become a rather important source of information for
me: a 1997 book entitled The Fourth Turning: What the Cycles of History Tell Us About America’s Next
Rendezvous with Destiny, by William Strauss and Neil Howe. The authors detail a recurring pattern at
the core of modern history: over the past five centuries, Anglo-American society has entered a new
pattern—a new turning—every two decades or so, and these turnings come in cycles of four. Paralleling
the ancient Etruscan concept of the saeculum (referring to a time period of approximately 90 years), the
entire cycle spans the length of a long human life. Within the timeframe of each cycle, four turnings of
the saeculum occur along a ‘seasonal’ rhythm of growth, maturation, entropy, and destruction. Within
each full cycle, the turnings come with their own discernible mood. An upbeat “high” period is followed
by a passionate era of “awakening,” and then an “unraveling” phase ushers in two decades of “crisis.”

While there is no astrology in the book, I have found it to be remarkably useful for expanding the
Timeline material in the Shamanic Astrology Paradigm ™ (see the SAMS newsletter archives for my
review of the book).

The book’s framework provides a marvellously useful application in examining US history (and the major
historical turning points in Europe and China as well, however the pattern does not as accurately apply
to Russia). We are currently in the era of a fourth turning, which is a “decisive era of secular upheaval,
when the values regime propels the replacement of the old civic order with a new one.” It is a time of
“maximum darkness” that begins with a catalyst, shifting society to regenerate out of an old order into a
new one.

Looking back, the American Revolution took place during a fourth turning between the years 1773-
1794. The US Civil War was also a fourth turning: 1860-1865. The next one was the Great Depression
and WWII, occurring in 1929-1946. Within the current saeculum, the fourth turning —which the
authors refer to as the “Millennial Crisis”— began with the 9/11 event in 2001 and is estimated to end
around 2025. It is totally fascinating to me that this current turning corresponds with the US Pluto and
Chiron returns. The triple cross eclipses over America should certainly get our attention, if we are
willing to look at history. Each fourth turning for the US has resulted in a distinct shift into a different
national paradigm; however none of these former turnings have been concurrent with the powerful
astrological factors outlined in this article.

The authors begin their book with this sentence: “America feels like it’s unraveling.” What might we
expect as a result of this turning? Will it be the death of the American experiment? Will it be another
revolution, resulting in the breakup of the US as we have known it? Will it be something like post WWII
(Cancerian) development of the largest middle class ever? Will it be similar to the sellout of the Black
population after the Civil War? Or will the dominant energy of Saturn and then Pluto in Aquarius
catalyze the technocratic, trans-humanist, top-down, Homo Sapiens 2.0, Great Re-set agenda of the
New World Order?

Or, might it herald the Great Awakening, ushering in the restoration of primal Earth/Gaia and a
commitment to personal autonomy and sovereignty, emphasizing our shared humanity and connection
to Spirit/Divinity and our capacity to co-create with Great Mystery? I heartily vote for the latter
outcome!

It is my hope that this article and other related resources I am working on will assist us in preparing for
the potentials of these pivotal next few years. As we expand our awareness to include all possibilities,
supported by SA, we can truly embody a three world approach as events unfold. We can meet this
fourth turning with awareness, embodying the individual role we are each here to play in the collective
drama, aligning with life purpose and whole-heartedly taking up our place in the intricate mandala of
life.

PHASE 20 (ARIES 20°): A YOUNG GIRL FEEDING BIRDS IN WINTER
KEYNOTE: Overcoming crises through compassion.
Nature’s seasonal rhythms imply an oscillation between living and dying. Through creative imagination
man can “fly over” the cycle, and discover means not only to escape from the fatality of seasonal decay
or deprivation, but to assist other living entities to survive through crises. Migrating birds fly south (cf.
symbol of Aries 12°), but by establishing a partnership with other creatures unable to escape wintry
deprivation or death, man can maintain the life of the spirit (symbolized by birds) steady through all
crises if, like a “young girl,” he is widely open to the promptings of love and sympathy.

At this fifth stage of the symbolic sequence we witness human activity motivated by sympathy
