Welcome to AMEB Queensland 2018 Welcome to AMEB Queensland 2018 It is with great excitement that I welcome you to the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) Queensland in 2018, the centenary year of AMEB as a national organisation in Australia. On the 15th May, 1918, the AMEB emerged as a national body with the purpose of providing graded music examinations for developing musicians – examinations which have since diversified considerably from the early days of music assessments. From classical instrumental studies and vocal performance, including Musical Theatre, Speech and Drama to contemporary music studies and Rockschool, AMEB now provides progressive experiences, assisting students to reach their potential as performers and musicians. The Board provides syllabuses encompassing a wide range of subjects, offering students access to the best repertoire through its various publications, and a number of new and revised syllabuses have been released for examination from 2018, including Oboe Series 1 and Piano for Leisure Series 4. In 2018, AMEB (Qld) will have the pleasure of hosting a number of Piano for Leisure Series 4 workshops with Tim Topham in Brisbane (Saturday 10th March), Sunshine Coast (Sunday 11th March) and Townsville (Sunday 22nd April). I ask all teachers interested in attending these workshops to monitor our website (http://ameb.qld.edu.au/) and Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/amebqld/) for more information. Our State is also witnessing exponential growth in the number of candidates undertaking the Rockschool syllabus. In 2017, AMEB (Qld) held the first Rockschool ukulele examinations in Australia and, as a result of the increasing demand for the popular music syllabus, we will also be holding a number of Rockschool workshops throughout 2018. Again, I ask all teachers interested in attending these workshops to monitor our website and Facebook page for updates. Queensland’s increasing appetite for music and speech and drama education is incredibly exciting. I’m sure the upcoming year will be filled with numerous learning opportunities, new challenges and great performances. We are delighted to be of service to the Arts community, and look forward to welcoming you and your students back in 2018. Note: Piano for Leisure Series 1, Series 2 and Series 3 can still be used with the current Piano for Leisure syllabus. No Grade Book series is being withdrawn. Note: Piano for Leisure Series 4 Recording and Handbooks – Preliminary to Grade 8 (2017) – do not contain a CD, as was the case for previous series. These books now contain a code to download the tracks online. Oboe AMEB is pleased to announce that the following publications are available from November 2017 for Oboe: • Oboe Series 1 – Preliminary to Grade 4 (2017) • Oboe Technical work (2017) • Oboe Sight-reading (2017) • Oboe recorded accompaniments – Preliminary to Grade 3. Recorded Accompaniments In 2018, AMEB will continue to release recorded accompaniments for use in study and examinations. Where AMEB recorded accompaniments are available, candidates may perform with those recordings in examinations as an alternative to using an accompanist. Recordings will be available as CDs from AMEB’s Online Shop, from AMEB Preferred Retailers, and as downloads from iTunes and other digital music outlets. For more information, refer to AMEB’s website (www.ameb.edu. au). New Syllabus: Oboe AMEB is proud to announce the launch of its new Oboe syllabus, available for examination in all states from 2018. As well as the comprehensive review of the Manual Lists and the technical work requirements, culminating in the release of Oboe Technical work (2017), for the first time ever this syllabus features Grade Books for Oboe (Series 1), from Preliminary to Grade 4. The Grade Books include a selection of appealing and pedagogically valuable repertoire in a range of styles. The new syllabus also includes two additional examinations: Preliminary, at the beginning of the syllabus; and Certificate of Performance, which serves both to cap the Level 2 examinations as well as prepare candidates for the requirements of the Level 3 examinations. The following resources, available from November 2017, may be used with the new syllabus: • Oboe Series 1 – Preliminary to Grade 4 (2017) • Oboe Technical work (2017) • Oboe Sight-reading (2017) • Oboe recorded accompaniments – Preliminary to Grade 3. Oboe Technical work (2000) may not be used with the new syllabus. This book may only be used with the Oboe syllabus that last appeared in the 2017 Manual of Syllabuses. This new Oboe syllabus will be examined concurrently with the version of the Oboe syllabus that last appeared in the 2017 Manual of Syllabuses for two years after the release of the new syllabus. From the start of 2020, the previous Oboe syllabus will no longer be available for examination. 6
Revised Syllabus: News and Information 2018 Tuba A revised version of the Tuba syllabus appears for the first time in the 2018 Manual of Syllabuses. The main aims of these revisions are: • to replace works in the Manual Lists that are no longer in print; • to replace works in the Manual Lists that are infrequently used; • to remove the Orchestral Excerpts from Level 3 (Associate and Licentiate); and • to update references made to widely used pedagogical volumes such as the Method for Tuba/Trumpet/ Trombone by Jean-Baptiste Arban so that page numbers and exercise numbers correlate to the current edition of the volumes. There have been no changes to the grade books or technical work requirements for this syllabus. The revised Tuba syllabus will be examined concurrently with the version of the Tuba syllabus that last appeared in the 2017 Manual of Syllabuses for two years after the release of the revised syllabus. From the start of 2020, the previous Tuba syllabus will no longer be available for examination. Syllabus Changes: Theory of Music – Grade 3 Under ‘Creative’, candidates are now required to complete BOTH a) and b). That is, they are now required to BOTH write a rhythmic pattern to a simple couplet AND write a melody of 4 bars (previously they chose either a) OR b)). Theory of Music – Grade 4, Grade 5 and Grade 6 Under ‘Creative Work’, option b) to complete a melody has been removed. ALL candidates are now required to complete a), that is, to write a melody to a passage of text. Recital Examinations (2018 Trial Continuation) The Recital Examination trial will continue in 2018, allowing a full year of data to be collected and reviewed before a decision is made as to the future of this examination. Therefore, in 2018, candidates will still be able to undertake a Recital Examination in violin, flute, trumpet and drama and communication. The Recital Examination will comprise of repertoire only, and will feature material from the AMEB syllabuses along with an ‘Own Choice’ option. Go to www.ameb.edu.au for more information. Syllabus Developments: Syllabus Reviews In late 2018, AMEB plans to release a new Piano syllabus for examination from January 2019, supported by publications including: Grade Books (Preliminary to Grade 8); and Recording and Handbooks (Preliminary to Grade 8); as well as a new Technical work book and a new Sight-reading book. Rockschool: Rockschool Examinations The Board of AMEB Ltd is pleased to continue our partnership with Rockschool in 2018 to deliver exams and syllabuses in Australia through AMEB. Policies and Procedures Policies and Procedures 2018 Acceptance of Enrolments Enrolments are accepted by AMEB (Qld) on the understanding that teachers, private entrants, candidates and parents: • agree to AMEB (Qld) policies and procedures; • accept that assessments shall be made strictly in accordance with the syllabus, requirements, objectives and regulations prescribed in the 2018 AMEB Manual of Syllabuses; and • pay the required fees associated with the enrolment. An examination schedule advising enrollers and candidates of the allocated examination time and date will be sent to the enroller three weeks prior to practical examinations. All rescheduling must occur in consultation with AMEB (Qld), with appropriate fees paid prior to the requested change being approved. Annual Diploma Concert and Awards Presentation AMEB (Qld) 2018 Annual Diploma Concert and Awards Presentation will take place on Friday 9 February, 2018, at the Queensland Conservatorium in South Bank. AMEB (Qld) has a cut-off date (for successful completion of the required Theory of Music, Musicianship or Music Craft [or other alternate examining authority] examinations), which is subject to change each year depending on the concert date. These cut-off dates will be posted on AMEB (Qld) website (http://ameb.qld.edu.au/) and Facebook page (https://www.face- book.com/amebqld/) towards the end of the year. Care and Supervision of Candidates Parents/guardians and/or enrolling teachers and candidates are responsible for candidates’ transportation to and from the examination venue, and for the care and supervision of candidates at all times when the candidate is not in the examination room. Candidates for written examinations will not be allowed to leave the examination room within the first hour of the examinations. Candidates who have finished writing at any other time may leave the examination room, but will not be allowed to return. Once candidates have left the examination room, AMEB has no further responsibility for supervising candidates. Responsible parents, guardians and/or enrolling teachers should instruct candidates aged 18 years or younger to remain in the examination room until the scheduled completion time of the examination, unless arrangements have been made for their care and supervision outside the examination room. It should be noted that, pursuant to the current Working with Children (Risk Management & Screening) Act 2000 (Qld), all AMEB Queensland Supervisors and Examiners hold current Blue Cards or Exemption from Holding Blue Cards Registration. Complaints AMEB (Qld) Examiners assess the performance they hear on the day of the exam against the Regulations, Grading Descriptors and Objectives for the grade, outlined in the 2018 Manual of Syllabuses. We understand that receiving an unexpected result may lead to disappointment given the dedication and many hours of practice that goes into preparing for an exam; however, the Examiners bring their professional judgement to bear on the day. Complainants should note that when a candidate’s grade is submitted for review by the Principal Examiner, the original grade can be upgraded, upheld or downgraded. AMEB (Qld) is a part of the Queensland Government’s Department of Education. As such, all customer complaints received are processed in line with their Customer Complaints Management Framework, Policy and Procedure. For more information about AMEB (Qld) Customer Complaints Management approach, please visit: http://ameb.qld.edu.au/ AMEBinfo/Pages/policies.aspx 10
Examination Centres for Practical and Written Examinations Policies and Procedures 2018 Examination centres are selected based on availability within the nominated session and in convenient proximity to the enroller, where possible. For examinations outside of metropolitan Brisbane, a minimum of five hours examining is required. Where there are insufficient candidates to meet the minimum requirement, AMEB may negotiate alternative arrangements. Options may include requesting candidates to travel to the nearest available centre; or providing the opportunity to withdraw from the examination with a full refund of the examination fee. Enrollers and candidates should note that warm-up rooms are not always available prior to examinations held at AMEB (Qld) Ashgrove-based studios, nor are they guaranteed in other locations. Candidates sitting an examination in a regional location are strongly encouraged to make final preparations at home before travelling to the examination venue. Candidates are encouraged to complete online examinations where possible. Written examinations can only be offered in those centres where it is commercially viable to do so. Where candidates have requested examinations in non-viable centres, they will be given the option of sitting their examination online, or sitting their examination at the nearest viable written- examination centre. Where neither option is deemed suitable by the candidate, the examination fee paid will be refunded in full. Teachers may request that music and speech examinations be conducted at a private centre, studio or school. A minimum of three hours (metropolitan) and five hours (regional) of examining will be required. Payments to AMEB (Qld) AMEB (Qld) is a part of the Queensland Government, so all transactions will appear on your bank statement as ‘Queensland Government 2’ or ‘Qld Gov 2’. Unfortunately, AMEB (Qld) does not have a unique identifier and the name appearing on bank statements cannot be changed. Please be aware of this when checking your bank statements and before cancelling your payments to us. Also, please note that a failure to receive payment for an examination will result in a candidate’s result/s being withheld. Photocopies In general, the Copyright Act prohibits the use of photocopied music. Photocopies should not be used by candidates in AMEB examinations, unless an exception to copyright applies, or the relevant music publisher has granted permission for the candidate to make a copy. Candidates are permitted to use photocopies for ease of page turning; however, the original version of the score, from which the copy was made, must be in the examination room with the candidate. In some circumstances, a copy of music may be required for use by the examiner. In these cases, if performing from memory, candidates should provide a published edition of the music to the examiner. Diploma candidates must supply a copy of their music to the examiner. If you are unsure of the provisions of the Copyright Act please refer to the ‘Guide to Music Copyright for Australian Educators’ on the APRA/AMCOS website or contact APRA/AMCOS on 1300 852 388 or apra@apra.com.au. Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) Certain AMEB subjects and levels have been recognised by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) and may contribute towards a student’s Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). It is essential for students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to advise the AMEB (Qld) State Office of their Learning Unique Identifier number (LUI number), which is issued through their school. This will enable the AMEB to support the transmission of eligible results directly to the QCAA. For students graduating in the 2018 calendar year, it is imperative that LUI numbers are supplied to the AMEB (Qld) State Office no later than Wednesday, 31 October, 2018. For further information and the full list of subjects, please visit the QCAA website on https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/. 11
Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) Policies and Procedures 2018 The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) may recognise AMEB qualifications, Grade 7 and above, for the purpose of assigning a tertiary ranking for entry to some Queensland tertiary courses. Please note that for the purpose of assigning a tertiary ranking, QTAC will require a theory component additional to the AMEB requirements. Subjects impacted would include the ‘For Leisure’ syllabuses (Grade 7 and above) and the ‘CPM’ syllabuses (Keyboard Grade 7 and above, and all other CPM syllabuses Advancing Steps 3 & 4). For further information, please contact QTAC on (07) 3858 1222. Recorded Accompaniments Accompaniment is essential wherever the pieces presented are provided with piano accompaniments, with the exception of Extra List pieces (please refer to ‘Accompanist’ on p. xii in the General Requirements Practical Examinations section of the current 2018 Manual of Syllabuses). This should be checked with the retailer at the time of purchase of the solo part. Voice and all instrumental subjects (other than piano, accordion, organ, harp and classical guitar) are to be accompanied. Where AMEB recorded accompaniments are available, candidates may perform with those recordings in their examination as an alternative to using an accompanist. It is the candidate’s responsibility to provide and operate suitable equipment for the examination. Please be mindful of your candidate’s age and technical ability when using recorded accompaniments. Candidates should refer to the foreword of the relevant instrumental syllabus in the annual Manual of Syllabuses for further information on recorded accompaniments for their instrument. Where candidates are performing with recorded accompaniments in an examination, they must use the ‘100%’ or ‘performance’ tempo. Extra Lists may be performed unaccompanied, even if written with accompaniment. Recording Examinations AMEB does not record examinations for a number of reasons, including equity across regions, access issues and expense. Candidates are not permitted to film or record their own examinations. Refunds and Transfer Policy If a candidate is unable to attend an examination due to medical and/or other extenuating circumstances and the examination has not yet been scheduled, a candidate’s enrolment may be changed without charge. Such changes can only be made to another examination session within the same calendar year. However, if the examination has been scheduled, the examination can only be changed to another date and time within the same calendar year when a deferment fee is paid and relevant documentation (e.g. medical certificate) is received by AMEB (Qld). If a candidate is unable to attend a practical or written examination due to medical reasons and/or other extenuating circumstances, a refund of 50 per cent of the enrolment fee may be made upon receipt of a written request, together with appropriate supporting documentation. This request must be lodged within the same calendar year. Candidates cannot re-sit an examination within the same session of that calendar year, but are eligible to re-enrol for that examination in a subsequent session later in the same calendar year. 12
Results Policies and Procedures 2018 AMEB (Qld) endeavours to dispatch results to enrollers within 14 days of an examination. Re-evaluation of Written Examination Papers Teachers and candidates are able to apply for a re-evaluation of a written examination result (Theory of Music, Musicianship, Music Craft and Speech and Performance Theory). The request must be made in writing and accompanied by the prescribed fee. Please note that when a paper is submitted for re-evaluation, the original mark can increase, decrease or remain the same. In the event that a re-evaluation of the examination results in an adjustment of the grade awarded, the re-evaluation fee will be refunded. Special Requests AMEB recognises that clients and candidates function in an environment of conflicting needs. To assist, AMEB (Qld) provides enrollers with the opportunity to note any circumstances on the enrolment form that may impact their candidates attending an examination. Special requests may include avoiding the dates of school camps, sporting functions, other examination commitments, religious observations etc. While every consideration is given to requests, it may not be possible to meet all requests, particularly if the request is for an exam to fall at the end of an examination session. Enrollers are requested to note that AMEB (Qld) may schedule practical examinations on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and in the evenings – depending on demand for service. If any candidates cannot be examined at these times, please include this advice in any special requests. School holidays are usually avoided; however, those candidates looking to enrol in Brisbane Session 25 in 2018 should note that the first week of that session coincides with the second week of the 2018 September school holidays. Special Needs Candidates AMEB (Qld) makes every effort to accommodate candidates with special needs by making reasonable adjustments to ensure candidates with disabilities are able to participate on the same basis as other candidates. Teachers and candidates should contact the AMEB (Qld) State Office to discuss their particular needs ahead of any examinations and supply any supporting documentation. Use of Electronic Media Candidates are advised that the functioning of laptops for PowerPoint presentations is the responsibility of the individual candidate. As such, each candidate should ensure they are familiar with the equipment to avoid delays in presentation. Visual Impairment Practical examination candidates with vision impairments have the option of completing either sight-reading for the grade they are completing, or aural tests from one grade higher. If candidates choose to undertake the sight-reading, a number of procedures will apply. Please contact the AMEB (Qld) State Office for more information on these procedures. Written examination candidates with vision impairments should contact the AMEB (Qld) State Office to discuss their special needs. Join in our 100 year celebrations in 2018 There will be a series of centenary events and projects running throughout the year. The AMEB (Qld) Examination Experience: Step-by-step Guide The AMEB (Qld) Examination Experience: Step-by-step Guide 1. Enrolling a Candidate There are two ways a candidate can be enrolled to sit an examination at AMEB (Qld) – Online at http://amebshop.eq.edu.au/ SHOP/ or via an enrolment form available for download from http://ameb.qld.edu.au. For enrolling via an enrolment form, all of the relevant sections on the form must be completed, including the candidate’s name, number and date of birth, as well as the grade and corresponding subject code. Candidates also need to provide the correct teacher/enroller code, to ensure examination notices, practical examination advices and results are sent to the correct person. AMEB (Qld) staff cannot manually complete an enrolment form for an enroller. Forms submitted incorrectly will be returned to the enroller to amend or complete the required sections before the enrolment is accepted and an examination scheduled. Candidates enrolling online can purchase the appropriate grade exam from the online shop (http://amebshop.eq.edu.au/ SHOP/). Please complete all fields when enrolling, including providing a teacher/enroller code and the candidate’s name, number and date of birth. Please use the Special Requests section of the enrolment form to highlight any dates the enrolling candidate may be unavailable. While every consideration is given to these requests, it may not be possible to meet all requests, particularly for requests for exams to fall at the end of an examination session. All enrolments received after the published closing date for the session will incur a late fee. 2. Confirmation of Enrolment, Practical Examination Advice and Examination Schedule The enroller will receive immediate confirmation of enrolment if lodged online. Other enrollers will receive confirmation from AMEB (Qld) scheduling team after the closing date for the session, via email or post. After completion of the scheduling, Practical Examination Advices, Schedules and Candidate Slips are generated and emailed/posted to the enroller with a minimum of three weeks’ notice prior to the examination date. If a candidate is unable to attend an examination due to medical and/or other extenuating circumstances and the examination has not yet been scheduled, a candidate’s enrolment may be changed to another examination session within the same calendar year without charge. However, if the examination has been scheduled, the examination can only be changed to another date/time within the same calendar year after a deferment fee is paid and relevant documentation (e.g. medical certificate) is received by AMEB (Qld). 3. Examination Day On the examination day, candidates need to arrive at the designated examination centre at least 15 minutes prior to their examination time. Please ensure each candidate has their completed Candidate Slip with them, as these are required by examiners to conduct examinations. Where warm-up rooms are available, a five (5) minute warm-up will be offered to the candidate. 4. Results AMEB Qld stipulates a 14-day timeframe (following an examination) for results to be dispatched to enrollers from the State Office.
