A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Friends, Welcome to our Annual Alumni Awards Banquet and Hall of Fame Induction ceremony. This event kicks off our Homecoming weekend celebration and it is only fitting that we acknowledge the remarkable accomplishments of our alumni as they return home to celebrate all things O’Connell. Tonight we will celebrate professional accomplishments, dedication to service and athletic prowess. We are excited and proud to welcome back these honored alumni, along with their families and friends, for this very special occasion when we enshrine formally their achievements in Bishop O’Connell history. Each of the honorees celebrated tonight with an Alumni Achievement Award or induction in the Athletic Hall of Fame exemplifies the commitment to excellence we try to instill in today’s O’Connell Knights. Our honorees serve as permanent reminders that an O’Connell education is a strong foundation to build upon and their accomplishments inspire all of us. I thank all those who nominated an individual for an Alumni Achievement Award as well as all those who served on the selection committees for both the Alumni Achievement Awards and the Athletic Hall of Fame. Their efforts are critical contributions that each year help us write another chapter in this school’s rich history of excellence in Catholic education. I pray that tonight is a very happy memory for our awardees, their loved ones and all those present. We look forward to sharing your amazing stories with current and future Knights. Sincerely in Christ, Bill Crittenberger

YOUNG ALUMNI AWARD Maha-Rebekah Abejuela Class of 1999 Maha-Rebekah Abejuela grew up in Northern Virginia with her parents and two brothers, both of whom are also Bishop O’Connell graduates. She graduated from Bishop O’Connell in 1999 where she was a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, the Keyettes, and served as Secretary/Treasurer of her Senior Class. After graduating from Bishop O'Connell, Maha attended the University of Virginia and graduated in 2003 with a double major in Government and Philosophy. While at UVA, she held leadership roles in numerous organizations including serving as President of the Asian Student Union, as an Executive Board Member of the Peer Advising and Family Network Organization, and as a Fourth Year Trustee. She then went on to attend Villanova University’s School of Law where she earned her Juris Doctorate in 2007. Maha started her law career at the Potomac Legal Aid Society (which later merged with the Legal Services of Northern Virginia), where her practice was focused on family law and foreclosure assistance. YOUNG ALUMNI AWARD In 2011, she transitioned to working as a prosecutor at the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney in Fairfax County where she prosecuted numerous misdemeanor and felony cases, with the majority of her cases focused on domestic violence. In 2016, Maha went to work as an Assistant County Attorney with Fairfax County where she handled abuse and neglect cases involving children and incapacitated adults. She is currently serving as a Judge in the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, and she is the first ever Asian woman appointed to be a judge in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
KNIGHTS' SERVICE AWARD Regina Carroll Russell '95, Courtny Carroll '09, Kimberly Carroll Chumley, Ashly Carroll Malliarakis '03, and Christina Carroll Archey '95 (d.) Five sisters with strong connections to O’Connell have recently come to national attention for their dedicated service to nursing. The story of the Carroll sisters was featured in the Catholic Herald and soon spread across various social media platforms and eventually landed on the CBS morning news. Their story of an inherited (and inherent) dedication to service is detailed below. Many families at Bishop O'Connell know Mrs. Cathy Carroll, who has served in the academics office for 28 years, and who has lovingly transported hundreds of children over those years in her yellow school bus from her neighborhoods in Southern Maryland to Bishop O'Connell. Only some of the O'Connell families also know her as the mother of five daughters, four of them are Bishop O'Connell alumni. All five Carroll daughters are registered nurses. Together they have given 67 years to this profession. Christina (Tina) and Regina (Gina), both graduated from O'Connell in 1995 and pursued degrees in nursing from Marymount University. Gina now has BSN, RN and CPEN behind her name. Continued on the next page
KNIGHTS' SERVICE AWARD She has been a nurse for nearly 21 years and currently leads an emergency room team in a Southern Maryland hospital. "What I love most about being a nurse is the satisfaction of helping others through their worst moments," Gina said. Gina's twin, Tina, served as a pediatric nurse before she passed away in 2008. "I know she would have been one of the first to stand up in these times right now and say, 'I am here and I am NOT afraid,'" her sister, Kimberly added. Like her older sisters, Ashly (BSN, RN, and O'Connell class of 2003) also studied nursing at Marymount. She currently coordinates and provides care for those in the community in need of complex spinal surgeries. "I became a nurse because I have always been passionate about the betterment of human life," Ashly said. The youngest sister, Courtny (BSN, RN, and O'Connell class of 2009) is another Marymount nursing graduate. She lives in California where she works as a traveling ICU nurse. Courtny is finishing up her Nurse Practitioner studies in May and will be first in the family to add AGACNP-BC to her title. "Nursing is not just a career to me; it is my passion—the love of helping people, and the challenge of not knowing what I will face each day," Courtny said. "This is a trying time for every nurse, but I cannot imagine being anywhere else but in a hospital helping others. I am thankful I have a job, blessed to have my health, and extremely proud to be a nurse." Kimberly is the oldest Carroll daughter. She attended La Reine High School in Maryland, an all-girls Catholic high school which merged with McNamara in the 1990s. She has been a nurse for 25 years in the service of all facets of women's and children's healthcare including labor and delivery, neonatal intensive care, mother and infant care, and pediatrics. KNIGHTS' SERVICE AWARD Kimberly's ties to O'Connell go beyond her sisters or her mom. Her daughter, Skylar, is a 2018 O'Connell graduate who is following the family career path and currently pursuing a nursing degree at James Madison University. "I can say this about each of my sisters without reservation: They show up to work every scheduled shift, roll up their sleeves and fight; fight for those who cannot," Kimberly said." Despite our different nursing backgrounds, we have each stared this virus in the face—the faces of men, women and children," Kimberly added. "This virus does not discriminate, but instead it is a grand equalizer hurling us to our knees, physically, spiritually, and emotionally. We fight because it is our calling; we fight because some of you cannot. We fight for ALL of humanity, because it is OUR passion. However, at the end of the day, we risk no more than our parents; our father who served for 27 years in the United States Army and our mother who has worked for Bishop O'Connell for the last 28 year, as she served her family 24 hours a day, seven days a week." Needless to say, Mrs. Carroll and her husband, Michael, are extremely proud of their children. "As all five daughters were starting their careers, we were regaled with stories of how our children were helping others—babies, children, mothers and adults," Mrs. Carroll said. "During these difficult times today, we have had our apprehension, but we stick by our belief that God has a plan for all. We have raised our children and watched them become strong women who give their lives every day to serve others in need."

ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME Bishop O'Connell High School recognizes the contributions of all its athletes throughout its history. It is the mission of the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee to induct, over a period of time, all deserving athletes as described in the criteria for selection. It is not the intent, nor the mission, of the O'Connell Athletic Hall of Fame to determine the best athlete or athletes in a particular sport or in the general athletic history of the school. The order of induction is not an indication of an athlete's value or worth as a player or a person. The 2020 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees are: Steve Long '82 Track & Field presented by Don Tillson '73 Christian Ruwe '91 Football presented by Raymond Williams '91 Amanda Blizzard '98 Softball presented by Lesley Palmer '00 The Hall of Fame Selection Committee Bill Carpenter '76 Alberto Starace Joe Crivella Annie Turner '93 Dennis Dwyer '61 Ray Williams '91 Sharee McClellan Gates '91 Joe Wootten John Hathaway '03 Mike Rickard '83 Rick Loughery '70 Ahmad Smith '02 Tommy Orndorff Christine Spann '90 Eileen O'Brien Prophett '88

In his senior year, he was named captain and selected as MVP for the Indoor Track team. Adding to his achievements, during his senior year at O'Connell, Steve earned gold at the Virginia State Catholic Championship in the pole vault, 440-yard race, and anchored the mile relay to victory. In the illustrious Penn Relays, Steve finished 6th place in the pole vault. As the season concluded, Steve was recognized as the top- ranked pole vaulter in the Washington Metro Area by the Washington Post, made All Northern Virginia honors by the Journal, and received the 1982 Sportsmanship of the Year Award for Track and Field by the Arlington County Better Sports Club. Steve continued to compete as a college athlete at Mount St. Mary’s and was inducted into the Mount St. Mary’s University Athletic Hall of Fame in January 2017 in recognition of his outstanding athletic achievements in Track and Field. Continued on the next page
ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME Steve set multiple school records while at the Mount, including in the pole vault and as a member of the 4X400 meter and Shuttle Hurdle Relay teams. All of his performances still rank among the top 10 all-time at the Mount. Steve’s record-setting indoor track performance at the Intercollegiate Amateur Athletics of America (IC4A) meet in 1995 stood for 19 years, and he was a qualifier for the NCAA Championships twice in the pole vault and all four years in the 4X400. After graduating from Mount Saint Mary's with a BS in Economics, Steve concluded his education after receiving his master’s in international Transactions from George Mason. Steve has been married to Patsy Ellis Long for 30 years, and they have 7 children. ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME Christian Ruwe Class of 1991 Football Named All-Met 2nd team in 1990 as a star wide receiver, Chris Ruwe was a standout three-sport athlete during his time at O'Connell. It was evident opposing defenses could not stop Mr. Ruwe on the gridiron as he snagged 51 passes for 914 yards and grabbed 11 touchdowns, which led the Metropolitan area, and also led the area with 17.9 yards/catch. Chris also received O'Connell's 1990 Outstanding Performance Award and was an integral part of football team’s success as they finished with a 6-4 record, the first winning record since Eric Metcalf graduated, 1985. Following Chris's success at O'Connell, he played football at the Naval Academy Preparatory School and the US Naval Academy. After graduating from the US Naval Academy in May 1996, Chris has had a long and distinguished military career. He was stationed in Nairobi, Kenya in support of Operation Resolute Response, where his Platoon bolstered the U.S. Embassy after the terrorist attacks in 1998. Continued on the next page

In 2010, he graduated from the Trial Judge Advocate General Legal Center and he is currently a LtCol in the U.S.M.C Marine Corps JAG, a Staff Judge Advocate, and principal legal advisor to the Commanding General of the 2d Marine Division. Chris, his wife, and their four daughters currently live in South Carolina.
ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME Amanda Blizzard Class of 1998 Softball Statistically, Amanda Blizzard is one of the greatest athletes to ever don an O'Connell uniform. Ms. Blizzard was 1st Team All-Met (1998) at catcher for her senior year, and also earned All-State and All-League accolades. Amanda is among O’Connell career leaders in doubles with 15 and 6 home runs. She is also the single-season leader in home runs with 4 and 7 doubles, respectively. While Amanda was a three-year Varsity starter at catcher and third- base, her teams sported an amazing 77-2 record. During Amanda’s tenure at O'Connell, they were a nationally-recognized powerhouse, punishing opponents in the WCAC and non-conference daily and finishing 23-0 in 1996 and 26-0 in 1998. They were ranked 7th in the country in the 1998 USA Today’s Final National High School Poll. Notably, across two seasons, the O'Connell softball team was on a historic 46-game winning streak and a scoreless inning string of 138 2/3s innings, and, of course, Amanda Blizzard was an integral part of the team in that era. In the 1997 WCAC Championship Game, Amanda hit a walk-off RBI single to clinch the title over Bishop McNamara, which forever cemented her as an O'Connell great. Continued on the next page
ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME After Amanda graduated from O'Connell, she took her athletic prowess to Mount St. Mary’s University and became a star there as well. Starting as a catcher for the ‘Mount’ for all four years, she was Second-team All-Northeast Conference team as a freshman, batted a whopping .358 that year, which is a record, and also set a record (still current) for home runs by a freshman. In her junior year, Amanda set more records as she drove in 10 runs in one game— tied NCAA Division 1 record for a single game. Amanda dominated Mount St. Mary's career record books as she finished in the top 5 for home runs, doubles, RBI’s, at-bats, and walks. Amanda also played on a 23-under ASA (The Amateur Softball Association) team composed of college softball players who were placed in a national tournament. Following her college softball career, she became an assistant softball coach at Westfield High School in Chantilly, VA, serving in that role from 2006-2011. The team won three district titles and captured two regional titles during that time. She also played on a coed slow-pitch team that went to two national tournaments. After obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Social Studies Education from Mount St. Mary’s and a master’s in history from George Mason University, Amanda pursued a career as an educator. She is currently a social studies teacher at Westfield High School in Chantilly, and a consultant for the Educational Testing Service and College Board.
