AS WE GATHER
Welcome to this special service for Easter Sunday. In this service that honors the
250th anniversary of the song “Amazing Grace,” we come to understand that Mary
Magdalene witnessed amazing grace outside the empty tomb when she encountered
Jesus risen from the dead. We await the free gift of new life to come because of his
resurrection for us.

Lights off – (spring morning sounds)

CALL TO WORSHIP
Pastor:  Christ is risen!
People: He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Pastor: The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.
People: Glad songs of salvation are in the tents of the righteous:

Pastor: “The right hand of the Lord does valiantly,
People: The right hand of the Lord exalts, the right hand of the Lord does
           valiantly!”

Pastor: I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the deeds of the Lord.
People: The Lord has disciplined me severely, but he has not given me over to
           death.

                                                                                3

Pastor: I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation.
People: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.

Pastor: This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.
People: This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Pastor:    Christ is risen!
People: He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
Pastor: The Lord Jesus, who earlier had healed Mary Magdalene, sent her on that
        first Easter morning to be one of the first witnesses to his resurrection. Let
        us confess our sins to God and ask his forgiveness, praying that he would
        send us out as witnesses to his resurrection.
People: Almighty God, we have sinned against you in our thoughts, words
        and actions. Instead of living in the power of our Savior’s
        resurrection, we follow our own selfish and sinful desires. We turn
        from your holy Word and listen instead to temptations of world
        around us. We often live to please ourselves instead of serving others
        in Jesus’ name. Have mercy on us and forgive our sins.

Pastor: As the Lord showed grace to Mary Magdalene, healing her and sending her
           as a witness, he shows grace to us. Jesus our Savior suffered and died for
           our sins and rose to life on the first Easter morning. I announce to you that
           your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
           Holy Spirit. Amen.
People: I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the deeds of the Lord …
           This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it!

Pastor:    Christ is risen!
People: He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

HYMN OF PRAISE: "He's Risen, He's Risen" #480 (verses 1 and 4)
Verse 1
He’s risen, He’s risen, Christ Jesus, the Lord;
He opened death’s prison, the_incarnate, true Word.
Break forth, hosts of heaven, in jubilant song
And earth, sea, and mountain their praises prolong.

                                                                                       4
Verse 4
O, where is your sting, death? We fear you no more;
Christ rose, and now open is fair Eden’s door.
For all our transgressions His blood does atone;
Redeemed and forgiven, we now are His own.

SALUTATION
Pastor: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY
Pastor: Let us pray.
        Almighty God, you sent your Son to be our Savior, to suffer and die for us.
        On the third day after his death, Jesus was raised to life, never to die again
        and victorious over sin, death and the devil. As Jesus healed Mary
        Magdalene, casting out the demons that possessed her, we have been
        healed by his wounds, our sins forgiven. As Mary Magdalene and the other
        women at the empty tomb went out to share the joyful news of Jesus’
        resurrection, we, too, have good news to share. Lead us to be faithful,
        eager witnesses for our risen and reigning Lord Jesus, sharing the Gospel
        with others so that they, too, will come to know and worship him as Lord.
        Hear our prayer and accept our Easter praise in Jesus’ name.
People: Amen.

**Dan Severidt will read the Old Testament and Epistle**

OLD TESTAMENT READING: Isaiah 25:6-9; Page 586
On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast
of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. And he will
swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is
spread over all nations. He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe
away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the
earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, “Behold, this is our God; we
have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let
us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People:     Thanks be to God.

SPECIAL MUSIC: “Hosanna” – Faith’s Bell Choir

EPISTLE: 1 Corinthians 15:12-28; Page 961
Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that
                                                                                         5
there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then
not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching
is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God,
because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true
that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been
raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your
sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we
have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.

But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen
asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the
dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. But each in his
own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. Then
comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every
rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies
under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For “God has put all things in
subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “all things are put in subjection,” it is plain
that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him. When all things are
subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things
in subjection under him, that God may be all in all.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People:     Thanks be to God.

HYMN: "Christ the Lord Is Risen Today; Alleluia" #463 (verses 1 and 4)
Verse 1
Christ the Lord is ris’n today; Alleluia!
Christians, hasten on your way; Alleluia!
Offer praise with love replete, Alleluia!
At the paschal victim’s feet. Alleluia!

Verse 4
Christians, on this holy day, Alleluia!
All your grateful homage pay; Alleluia!
Christ the Lord is ris’n on high; Alleluia!
Now He lives, no more to die. Alleluia!

HOLY GOSPEL: John 20:1-18; Page 906

Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twentieth chapter.
People: Glory to you, O Lord.

                                                                                            6
Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was
still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran and
went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to
them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have
laid him.” So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the
tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and
reached the tomb first. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but
he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He
saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head,
not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple,
who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they
did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples
went back to their homes.

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into
the tomb. And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain,
one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”
She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have
laid him.” Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not
know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are
you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have
carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus
said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means
Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the
Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your
Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the
disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

Pastor:     Christ is risen!
People: He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

NICENE CREED
I believe in one God,
the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth
and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
                                                                                           7
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried.
and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
and ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.
and He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord and giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life {+} of the world to come. Amen.

                                                                           8

But the gate of life immortal;

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Pastor: Alleluia! Christ is risen!
People: He is risen, indeed! Alleluia!

                                                                    9
Pastor: Crucified and risen Lord, today we celebrate your resurrection and your
          triumph over sin, death and the devil. In you we have forgiveness and the
          sure and certain promise of eternal life. We have heard the glad news, “He
          is risen!” We believe that you are our living and reigning Savior. Lord, in
          Your mercy,
People:   hear our prayer.

Pastor: Crucified and risen Lord, you healed Mary Magdalene, casting out demons
          that possessed her. In grace, you called her to be a witness to your
          resurrection. As you did in the lives of Mary and your disciples, you have
          showered us with your grace, healing us by your wounds and calling us to
          serve others and live as witnesses to your amazing grace. Lord, in Your
          mercy,
People:   hear our prayer.

Pastor: Crucified and risen Lord, we pray for healing for those in need in body and
          spirit, especially … and those we name in our hearts before you. Give them
          strength of faith and courage to face the difficult days in their lives. Grant
          hope to those who are facing grief and loss. Lead us to serve them in love,
          offering to them the comfort found in the promises of your Word. Lord, in
          Your mercy,
People:   hear our prayer.

Pastor: Crucified and risen Lord, you sent the women from the empty tomb to tell
          your disciples the joyful news of your resurrection. Give us the courage to
          be faithful witnesses to you, our living Lord and King so that, in the power
          of the Spirit, we can bring hope to a world lost in darkness of sin. Help us to
          bring to others the light of Easter morning, the light of forgiveness and life
          for all who believe. Lord, in Your mercy,
People:   hear our prayer.

Pastor: Crucified and risen Lord, we give you thanks and praise for your amazing
          grace. In grace, you called sinners, named and unnamed in Scripture, to
          serve in your kingdom: David, Isaiah, the blind man, the woman at the well,
          Paul, Peter, John, the repentant thief and Mary Magdalene. In grace, you
          have forgiven our sins and called us, as you called these other saints, to
          serve in your kingdom. Lord, in Your mercy,
People:   hear our prayer.

Pastor:   Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER       (Matthew 6:9–13)
    Our Father who art in heaven,
                                                                                       10
hallowed be Thy name,
            Thy kingdom come,
            Thy will be done on earth
               as it is in heaven;
            give us this day our daily bread;
            and forgive us our trespasses
               as we forgive those
               who trespass against us;
            and lead us not into temptation,
            but deliver us from evil.
          For Thine is the kingdom
            and the power and the glory
            forever and ever. Amen.

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD            Matthew 26:26–28; Mark 14:22–24; Luke 22:19–20;
1 Corinthians 11:23–25

Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread,
          and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and
          said: “Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in
          remembrance of Me.”

          In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given
          thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the
          new testament in My  blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of
          sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

PAX DOMINI
Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you all.
People: And also with you.

633 At the Lamb's High Feast We Sing
1
At the Lamb’s high feast we sing
Praise to our victorious King,
Who has washed us in the tide
Flowing from His piercèd side.
Alleluia!

2
Praise we Him, whose love divine
Gives His sacred blood for wine,
Gives His body for the feast—
Christ the victim, Christ the priest.
Alleluia!

3
Where the paschal blood is poured,
Death’s dread angel sheathes the sword;
Israel’s hosts triumphant go
Through the wave that drowns the foe.
Alleluia!

4
Praise we Christ, whose blood was shed,
Paschal victim, paschal bread;
With sincerity and love
Eat we manna from above.
Alleluia!

                                                                            12
5
Mighty Victim from the sky,
Hell’s fierce pow’rs beneath You lie;
You have conquered in the fight,
You have brought us life and light.
Alleluia!

6
Now no more can death appall,
Now no more the grave enthrall;
You have opened paradise,
And Your saints in You shall rise.
Alleluia!

7
Easter triumph, Easter joy!
This alone can sin destroy;
From sin’s pow’r, Lord, set us free,
Newborn souls in You to be.
Alleluia!

8
Father, who the crown shall give,
Savior, by whose death we live,
Spirit, guide through all our days:
Three in One, Your name we praise.
Alleluia!

Crown Him with Many Crowns #525
Verse 1
Crown Him with many crowns,
The Lamb upon His throne;
Hark how the heav’nly anthem drowns
All music but its own.
Awake, my soul, and sing
Of Him who died for thee,
And hail Him as thy matchless king
Through all eternity.

Verse 2
Crown Him the virgin’s Son,
The God incarnate born,
Whose arm those crimson trophies won
                                        13
Which now His brow adorn:
Fruit of the mystic rose,
Yet of that rose the stem,
The root whence mercy ever flows,
The babe of Bethlehem.

Verse 3
Crown Him the Lord of love.
Behold His hands and side,
Rich wounds, yet visible above,
In beauty glorified.
No angels in the sky
Can fully bear that sight,
But downward bend their wond’ring eyes
At mysteries so bright.

Verse 4
Crown Him the Lord of life,
Who triumphed o’er the grave
And rose victorious in the strife
For those He came to save.
His glories now we sing,
Who died and rose on high,
Who died eternal life to bring
And lives that death may die.

Verse 5
Crown Him the Lord of heav’n,
Enthroned in worlds above,
Crown Him the king to whom is giv’n
The wondrous name of Love.
Crown Him with many crowns
As thrones before Him fall;
Crown Him, ye kings, with many crowns,
For He is king of all.

Christ the Lord Is Risen Today #469
Verse 1
“Christ the Lord is ris’n today!”
Saints on earth and angels say;
Raise your joys and triumphs high;
Sing, ye heav’ns, and earth, reply.

                                         14
Verse 2
Love’s redeeming work is done,
Fought the fight, the battle won;
Lo! Our Sun’s eclipse is o’er;
Lo! He sets in blood no more.

Verse 3
Vain the stone, the watch, the seal;
Christ hath burst the gates of hell.
Death in vain forbids His rise;
Christ has opened paradise.

Verse 4
Lives again our glorious King!
Where, O death, is now thy sting?
Once He died our souls to save;
Where thy victory, O grave?

Verse 5
Soar we now where Christ has led;
Foll’wing our exalted Head.
Made like Him, like Him we rise;
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies.

Verse 6
Hail the Lord of earth and heav’n!
Praise to Thee by both be giv’n!
Thee we greet triumphant now:
Hail, the resurrection, Thou!

1
I know that my Redeemer lives;
What comfort this sweet sentence gives!
He lives, He lives, who once was dead;
He lives, my ever-living head.

7
He lives and grants me daily breath;
He lives, and I shall conquer death;
He lives my mansion to prepare;
He lives to bring me safely there.

8
He lives, all glory to His name!
He lives, my Jesus, still the same;
Oh, the sweet joy this sentence gives:
I know that my Redeemer lives!

God and man were crucified
The day the Promised One had died
It seemed that heaven's love had lost

As earth was filled with hopelessness
'Til the Son of Man began to wake
And the tomb became an empty grave
Oh the tomb became an empty grave

It was the death of Death
When You rose to life
When the dark surrendered
To the Risen Light
Oh praise the Savior
Jesus Christ
It was the death of Death and our victory

It was the death of Death
When You rose to life
When the dark surrendered
To the Risen Light

Jesus Christ
It was the death of Death and our victory

And hope for all the world has come
The Victor never lost His crown
'Cause hell and grave can't hold Him down
No hell and grave can't hold Him down

It was the death of Death
                                            18

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD              Matthew 26:26–28; Mark 14:22–24; Luke 22:19–20;

THE PEACE OF THE LORD
                                                                                      19

COMMUNION SONG: “Living Hope”
Verse 1
How great the chasm that lay between us
How high the mountain I could not climb
In desperation I turned to heaven
And spoke Your name into the night
Then through the darkness Your loving-kindness
Tore through the shadows of my soul
The work is finished the end is written
Jesus Christ my living hope

Verse 2
Who could imagine so great a mercy
What heart could fathom such boundless grace
The God of ages stepped down from glory
To wear my sin and bear my shame
The cross has spoken I am forgiven
The King of kings calls me His own
Beautiful Savior I’m Yours forever
Jesus Christ my living hope

Chorus
Hallelujah praise the One who set me free
Hallelujah death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in Your name
Jesus Christ my living hope

Chorus
Hallelujah praise the One who set me free
Hallelujah death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in Your name
Jesus Christ my living hope

Then came the morning that sealed the promise
Your buried body began to breathe
Out of the silence the Roaring Lion
Declared the grave has no claim on me

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Pastor: Alleluia! Christ is risen!
People: He is risen, indeed! Alleluia!
                                                                                     21

                                                                                       22
Our Father who art in heaven,
              hallowed be Thy name,
              Thy kingdom come,
              Thy will be done on earth
                 as it is in heaven;
              give us this day our daily bread;
              and forgive us our trespasses
                 as we forgive those
                 who trespass against us;
              and lead us not into temptation,
              but deliver us from evil.
           For Thine is the kingdom
              and the power and the glory
              forever and ever. Amen.

Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord.
People:     Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE: 1 Corinthians 15:12-28; Page 961
Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that
there is no resurrection of the dead?

Then
                                                                                         23
comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every
rule and every authority and power.

Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord.
People:     Thanks be to God.

SONG: “He’s Alive” – Brad Person, solo

HOLY GOSPEL: John 20:1-18; Page 906

                                                                                            24
People: He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

NICENE CREED
I believe in one God,
the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth
and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.

Amen.

CLOSING SONG: “King of Kings”
Verse 1
In the darkness we were waiting
Without hope without light
Till from Heaven You came running
There was mercy in Your eyes
To fulfil the law and prophets
To a virgin came the Word
From a throne of endless glory
To a cradle in the dirt

Chorus
Praise the Father
Praise the Son
Praise the Spirit three in one
God of Glory
Majesty
Praise forever to the King of kings

Verse 2
To reveal the kingdom coming
And to reconcile the lost
To redeem the whole creation
You did not despise the cross
For even in Your suffering
You saw to the other side
Knowing this was our salvation
Jesus for our sake You died

Chorus
Praise the Father
Praise the Son
Praise the Spirit three in one
God of Glory
                                                                                26
Majesty
Praise forever to the King of kings

Verse 3
And the morning that You rose
All of heaven held its breath
Till that stone was moved for good
For the Lamb had conquered death
And the dead rose from their tombs
And the angels stood in awe
For the souls of all who'd come
To the Father are restored

Verse 4
And the Church of Christ was born
Then the Spirit lit the flame
Now this Gospel truth of old
Shall not kneel shall not faint
By His blood and in His Name
In His freedom I am free
For the love of Jesus Christ
Who has resurrected me
