www.aflhuntercentralcoast.com.au BO M BER S H O LD O F F “ GR IT TY” PA NTH ER S TO SO AR IN TO B LAC K D IAM O ND C UP FI FTH RO U ND IN E Q UA L F IR ST Written by Isaac McIntyre, originally published in the Hunter Women’s Chronicle, 11 August Four matches into the Black Diamond Cup’s 2020 season, and the Bombers are still flying high. Not just in the re- sults, mind you; the whole Killarney Vale outfit are “loving being out on the park” after such a long preseason too, and it shows. In the opening round, which started nearly three months later than planned, the Bombers felled Warners Bay 112 –14. A week later, they edged the Hawks in a 110-point battle at Pasterfield Sporting Complex. Then they downed the Magpies by 83. This week, Killarney Vale faced another tough battle. Terrigal Avoca has been building year on year in the south, and Bombers coach Peter Kelleher knew they’d be a “banana peel” in the fourth-round contest at Adelaide Street Oval. “They’re a good side Terrigal, very hard at the footy and they play a very sophisticated style of AFL each and every week as well,” the Bombers helmsman told the Chronicle. “The Panthers are certainly hard at the footy!” he added again with a laugh. “No malice, of course, they’re well-coached and play well. Very gritty. They’re the emerging up and comers for sure, I think. Anything out of Terrigal is a quality unit. The ladies there have proved that right again, and I’m sure they’re only getting better.” It was Kristen Kessler that took the game by the scruff in front of goals. For the second time in two weeks, Killar- ney Vale’s number 13 slotted home four majors, and guided the league leaders 8.13–61 to 2.1–13. Jocelyn Kelle- her also shone in the clash. The win makes it four on the trot for the Bombers since their defeat at the hands of City at the end of last season. That’s the game that’s still in the back of the team’s mind, Kelleher said. It’s the one that’s driving them towards perfection. “All the girls have a fire in their belly from getting tumbled out in the preliminary final last year, ” he stated. “It’s driven us, it’s always in the back of their minds. That said, we’re not letting that control us, of course. It’s just a bonus.” 13
www.aflhuntercentralcoast.com.au BO M BER S H O LD O F F “ GR IT TY” PA NTH ER S TO SO AR IN TO B LAC K D IAM O ND C UP FI FTH RO U ND IN E Q UA L F IR ST On top of their partial quest for revenge, there’s another thing driving the Bombers to their clinical victories: they want to “make every moment count.” The Central Coast lineup “love playing footy,” their coach said, and it was heartbreaking when the start was delayed. It could be cancelled at any moment too, and they know it. “We could easily be put on hold again as soon as next week. We’re taking every game as it comes,” Kelleher said. “The whole team is just enjoying their footy, and we all love winning. We want to get to the end, but we’re playing game by game.” Also in the Black Diamond Cup Women’s fourth round, Cardiff disposed of Maitland 85–nil on the road to climb into third place in the league. The Hawks leapfrogged Terrigal Avoca, who remain in fourth ahead of the Magpies. Wyong Lakes earned their fourth-place spot with a 5.5–35 to 0.3–3 win against Warners Bay at Northlakes Oval. The Bulldogs have yet to chalk a win this year in three attempts. Finally, defending champs Newcastle City retained their spot at the top of the AFL Hunter Central Coast first grade standings with a victory against the combined Nelson Bay/Port Stephens outfit at No.1 Sportsground on Saturday afternoon. STANDINGS: Newcastle City, Killarney Vale (16), Cardiff (12), Terrigal Avoca, Wyong Lakes (8), Warners Bay, Mait- land, Nelson Bay/Port Stephens (0). 14

After a very challenging first Shaylene Bates three rounds of football our black diamond cup senior Michelle Bertucci men’s team pulled through with a gutsy Round 4 victo- Lucy Camden ry against Maitland and their first for the year. Great numbers on the track and some huge efforts amongst Nikita Carter our playing group paid off with a strong start leading Elizabeth Charles into a controlled and composed performance resulting Eliza Churchwood in a very satisfying win. Scott Manuelle snared a bag at Emily Coultas full forward with our midfield division outstanding all day. Most mores I’ve are our swag of first year players Madeline Feenstra who continue to perform well above their age and ex- Deanna Gray perience. Amy Kidd India Kidd Our BD shield side were unable to back up their stun- Lily Mae Kidd ning round 2 win and were overcome by an experi- enced Killarney Vale side despite a terrific start and Ramya Kommineni lead at quarter time. With Two byes in the first three Danielle Mackay rounds to start their season round 4 was always going Alison Manuelle to be a challenge and it is the waylaid start to their Lauren moore year more than the effort the team produced that im- pacted this result overall. This week will see the boys Ruby Smith start their climb once again with a big show against Caitlin Thain Cardiff this week. Maria Uzlova Claire Walsh Our AFLW side continue to shine, earning their first points for the year. Sadly it was gained through forfeit Jodie Wild however their form and progress in the past few weeks would have seen them take a victory before too long and our girls are confident that this weekend will be the one against Newcastle City. Despite this being the Tigers second consecutive week of fixtures spread separately across the region for away fixtures the playing group and support base at Gosford Tigers AFC could not be any more united. We are embracing the challenges ahead and look forward to more fierce and bold leaps forward this week- end....Happy footy to all 18

Another excellent quarter had the Marlins up by 28 points at one stage before 2 late goals from City reduced the margin to a flattering 16 points. Coach Bird encouraged his players to continue their hard work and not to become complacent. Unfortunately we came out flat and let City regain the ascendancy. Only down by 10 points, the game was ours if we wanted it. While we lifted and improved our entries into the forward line, our lack of fitness showed with City running out winners by 30 points. While a disappointing result, there were many positives to take away from the game. Tough uncompromising de- fence lead by Toffa and Joel was outstanding. Jase Carey, with his usual complete disregard for his head, was inspi- rational when he went from one contest to the next winning plenty of the ball and dishing it out to his teammates. Jayden looked as classy and tough as ever kicking 3 goals. In other highlights Billy earned jumper washing duties this week. How many 50’s was it Bill?
