SCHOOL ACCOMPLISHMENTS VAILS GATE STEAM ACADEMY LAUNCHES MBK|MSK PROGRAM Scholars from Vails Gate STEAM Academy joined My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) and My Sister’s Keeper (MSK). The MBK|MSK initiative was created by President Barack Obama to address persistent opportunity gaps faced by young people of color and to ensure that all young people can reach their full potential. Mrs. Russell-Scott (MBK) and Mrs. Whyte-Davis (MSK) have created a safe space for young scholars of color to freely express themselves. Through their work and activities, these students are reminded why their voice and presence is important. Scholars are learning how to better themselves and the world around them through action. SMS SUCCESSFULLY FOCUSES ON RESTORATIVE PRACTICES The South Middle School team has been working to build capacity to better understand our scholars and our collective roles within the school community. This year we have shifted one of our focuses toward restorative practices. The core of restorative practices is building, improving and repairing relationships when conflict arises and to better understand those around us. Restorative practices have been carried out through circles in the classrooms. When students are faced with conflict they work with teachers, counselors and administrators to transfer the learning into practice in order to address and mitigate it. We have found that students are finding their voice, learning and growing as scholars and community members. It has positive results with longer lasting effects and provides students with skills that are transferable to real life application. CELEBRITY MAKE-UP ARTIST AND HAIR STYLIST RETURNS TO SPEAK TO NFA STUDENTS Michelle deMilt, NFA alumna and 2002 graduate of the NFA Cosmetology program visited her alma mater to speak with students about her experience as an Emmy-nominated groomer and makeup artist.
