back home forward In 2021, the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation celebrates a quarter century of paving the way toward a vibrant cultural landscape by preparing tomorrow’s innovative leaders in culture and the arts and bringing the world’s most creative minds to Abu Dhabi and the world. The 2021 Abu Dhabi Festival will feature performances and exhibitions with the participation of 500 artists from over 50 countries, 16 exciting world premieres, 12 Festival productions, 8 global co-productions and 4 creative commissions.
Comission and Production back home forward Mohammed Fairouz’ Fifth Symphony The most internationally celebrated Emirati composer of his generation, Mohammed Fairouz, was inspired by the life of Sheikh Zayed, the UAE’s founding father, for his Fifth Symphony. The premiere, recorded in London and broadcast digitally around the world, is performed by the world-leading London Symphony Orchestra. Commission and Production back home forward Hekayat: Symphonic Tales by Ihab Darwish Noted young Emirati composer, Ihab Darwish, will take us on a creative journey with a symphonic melodic performance highlighting the UAE’s values of cross-cultural exchange, diversity and openness. Performed by the acclaimed Beethoven Academy Orchestra from Krakow, Poland, this exciting new work will be conducted by maestro Tomasz Tokarczyk, featuring tenor José Cura and virtuoso musicians Sara Andon, Kodō, Carlos Piñana and many others. Co-production back home forward Opera L’Apocalypse Arabe Based on the legendary epic poems of Lebanese-American poet and visual artist Etel Adnan, with composition and libretto by the innovative avante-garde Palestinian-Israeli composer Samir Odeh-Tamimi and directed by accomplished French- Lebanese theatre director and artistic director Pierre Audi, performed by Frankfurt-based Ensemble Modern, a leading New Music ensemble of diverse musicians from across Europe and Asia, conducted by the notable Ivan Volkov, co-produced with the pioneering experimental cultural institution, the LUMA Foundation in France. Co-production back home forward Story of the Violin The most sought-after violinist of her generation, Nicola Benedetti CBE celebrates the history and emotional power of the violin and its iconic repertoire. She will present a unique, personal, beautifully filmed concert experience that includes music by Biber, Bach, Paganini and Ysaÿe. On this journey, Nicola will collaborate with musicians throughout the world including a composition by jazz legend Wynton Marsalis through the intrinsic education work of the Benedetti Foundation. Co-production back home forward ABT Today: The Future Starts Now This online celebration, will feature four World Premieres created in quarantined “ballet bubbles” and performed by ABT’s incredible dancers. The adventurous and imaginative creators include choreographers Gemma Bond, Darrell Grand Moultrie and Pam Tanowitz. This unique project toasts American Ballet Theatre’s 80 years and Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation’s 25 years of creativity, innovation and diversity.
