Guided tour through the Burren / Lough Avalla. The Burren region is internationally famous for its landscape and flora. A visitor to the Burren can experience the colourful diversity of flowering plants living together within the one ecosystem. The farming community have an enormous influence on the region and they work hand in hand with conservationists to maintain the delicate ecosystem of the Burren area. They have managed the land in such a way as to preserve the unusual flora and habitats that remain today. Harry Jeuken, a hard working, wise and humane traditional Burren farmer takes us on a 6km trail through his old celtic farm which sweeps the shores of the little lake called Lough Avalla. “Magical” is the word often used to describe this trail that goes around the farm and includes an amazing fairy ring, with trees and rocks draped in gleaming green moss, a holy well, hazel woods and a classic limestone (karst), fissured pavement characteristic of the Burren. There are wonderful views in all directions, from the steep cliffs, to Mullaghmore, and to Lough Gealain in the National Park. This walk gives an opportunity to reflect on the many generations who lived on and cared for this land from the Celtic and early Christian times to the present. At the end of the circuit the trail can be taken to the tea house and visitors are welcome to enjoy some refreshments and home baking.
