Poppy Richards - Sunshine Coast Region Poppy faces multiple life challenges due to the effects of Cerebral Palsy (Left Hemiplegia) and Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) resulting from premature birth and pre-eclampsia during her mother’s pregnancy. Calf surgery due to a combination of moderate pain, an uneven gait and balance issues has added another layer of complexity to Poppy’s sports career, however this is somewhat off-set by enhanced levels of self-esteem and confidence derived from sport that affords her the drive to progress and keep doing the things she loves. Poppy works hard to build her core strength and balance leading to her capacity to participate in sports with a Cerebral Palsy T37 classification such as swimming, Para-triathlon, life-saving and netball. Poppy is a true inspiration to all of us. Our Assistance Recently A4K A4K assisted Poppy to attend the National Schools Cross Country Titles in Hobart. As our 2018 scholarship holder Poppy will receive ongoing assistance to pursue all of her aspirations in sport. Poppy Richards +)*1:-DL\aheZklabiAhe]^k Poppy dreams of “MENTORING OTHER KIDS 4. WITH DISABILITIES”
Ethan dreams of “PLAYING ON THE RIGHT WING FOR THE AUSTRALIAN SOCCEROOS” Ethan Godwin – North West Region Set back after set back has not deterred Ethan from pursuing his sporting dreams. Cancer struck his family with his mother’s breast cancer diagnosis resulting in his dad taking up extra shifts to pay the bills. Mt Isa based and typical of a kid living in regional Queensland, Ethan is a talented sports’ person representing his Northern Region in Cross Country and Football. Whilst competing in the Queensland State Football titles Ethan badly injured his knee, was taken from the field, green whistled and ambulanced to hospital. Thankfully there was no break but the need for an ultrasound diagnosed poor blood flow and further costs for his family. A4K funding was able to relieve some of this financial pressure and we will take great interest in Ethan’s future progress in sport. Our Assistance A4K funding assisted Ethan to represent North West Region recently in Football at the 12yrs State Championships in Hervey Bay. Ethan Goodwin :-DLibkbmh_:pZk]Pbgg^k 5.
Chloe Whittaker – Wide Bay Region Despite Chloe facing multiple challenges such as 45% hearing loss requiring regular audiology tests and travel from Yarrilee near Harvey Bay to Brisbane, a Pulmonary Heart Stenosis requiring two bouts of heart surgery (so far), plus a rare incurable chronic lung disease titled Bronchiectasis, Chloe continues to love playing her sport. Chloe lives daily with her disabilities but keeps trying, giving all she can; and is noted as a young person that doesn’t give up easily. She says she just wants to be treated like everyone else, play sport and make the school sport representative teams. Her parents and school know how determined she is and support her all the way in all endeavours. Our Assistance A4K funding assisted Chloe to attend girls AFL State Invitational in Maroochydore. Chloe dreams of “BEING TREATED LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, PLAYING SPORT TO A HIGH LEVEL AND MAKING AS MANY REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS AS POSSIBLE.” Chloe Whittaker :-DLibkbmh_Lihkm:pZk]Pbgg^k 6.
Tito Sheriff – Metropolitan West Region Tito is 16 years old and in Year 11 at Ambrose Treacy College at Indooroopilly in the Met West School Sport Region. Tito arrived as a refugee from Guinea in 2004. Tito is one of 5 children and his mother is currently pregnant with her 6th child. Tito and his siblings live with their mother. Tito’s mother is currently not employed and is undertaking home duties. Earlier this year the family home burnt down and the family lost all personal belongings. Sadly the family had no insurance. Tito qualifies for funding under the hardship cause. Tito loves sport and plays with a smile on his face. His sporting loves are AFL, athletics, touch and football. He is a representative AFL player and Footballer and has been recently recognised by the Brisbane Lions Academy as a Premier League Football player with Rochedale FC. Tito one day dreams of being drafted in the AFL or English Premier League. Our Assistance A4K assisted Tito to attend the AFL National Schools Carnival in Perth where he was one of Queensland’s best players. We are sure to hear more of Tito. Tito dreams of “BEING DRAFTED IN THE AFL OR ENGLISH PREMIER 6KěO5JGRKė :-DLibkbmh_Lihkm:pZk]Pbgg^k LEAGUE.” 7.
Compassion, Dedication & Mkbnfia:@:BGLM:]o^klbmr Poppy Richards, Ethan Godwin, Chloe Whittaker and Tito Sheriff all represent our Aspirations4Kids in Sport story. On so many levels their stories are ones of compassion, dedication and triumph. The story of kids from varied backgrounds and their battles against adversity… who at early ages experienced life defining moments… infused by devoted Queensland State School teachers and a belief that school sport can be the catalyst that transforms a young person’s life. All are highly talented and whilst still a work in progress these kids are very likely to become great success stories. But for every positive story like theirs, there are so many others I hear of each year, coming through the Queensland school’s sport system, which are not so positive. Due to factors such as family and personal hardships, disabilities and chronic illness and remote issues or simply a lack of opportunity, so many others do not benefit from the life changing experiences like theirs. I invite you to join with me to help make a difference to many more young people’s lives and their families and help to give our Queensland Kids a Sporting Chance! Yours in Sport, Ian Healy
