Franklin proceeded to the development of a park on the grounds of the Town hall and the Municipal house (located respectively at 1670 and at 1688, route 202) in order to make a place that is more accessible and welcoming to all its citizens. Two picnic areas have been set up. One is located in front of the post office and the other behind it. This rest stop also aims to welcome cyclists and visitors passing through Franklin. This project was made possible by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs who granted a sum of $ 50,000 to the Municipality of Franklin, as financial assistance for local projects for improving public spaces. Increase in property value within the perimeter of Franklin Center Although it is still early to determine the increase in property values following the development of the Franklin Center Town Hall and Post Office land, Mr. Unsal Ozdiliek, a professor of real estate at ESG UQAM and property appraiser, estimates that the increase in the value of surrounding properties following the construction of a park is between 8% and 12%. For the present case, we have assumed the increase in property values following the creation of the park at 10%. In reality a few other buildings just outside the town perimeter are also benefiting, but we have established the estimation only with the properties and vacant lots within the town of Franklin Center. PERMACULTURE The Institute of Tourism and Hospitality of Quebec (ITHQ) has chosen Au jour le jour, on the 8e Rang, as the first stop on their tour in our part of the country. The reputation of the small permacul- turist has gone beyond the region. Good news, Au jour le jour has just signed a ten-year lease for the use of 3 hectares of Permaculture land on our magnificent Covey Hill. The expansion will mainly affect the production of organic garlic (10,000 heads) and medicinal plants. DISTRIBUTION OF RIGID PINES Franklin Elementary School received from the Municipality nearly 300 small rigid pines accompanied by an explanatory leaflet aimed at educating students about this endangered species. LOCAL BUSINESS BLUE MOOSE SOAP I make natural soap and body products in St-Antoine-Abbe. I started making soap in 2010 because I love natural products and wanted to learn how to do it myself. I started out with very rough looking soap bars but they were beautiful to me! I gradually refined this practical art into a small business which also gives me a creative outlet for my artistic side. I make my soap in small batches of 30 bars using the cold process method of soap making. This allows me to control the quality of the ingredients and create a beautiful product at the same time. Most of my soaps are vegan and made with essential oils or fragrance. I also make soap with goat’s milk which is known for its hydrating properties. Glycerin is a natural byproduct of soap making and every bar contains almost 10%. This handmade soap is gentle and good for your skin. Using this kind of soap is a treat for the senses! You can find my soap at my home in St-Antoine-Abbe or online on my Etsy shop. Rita Garand www.etsy.com/ca/shop/BlueMooseSoap Bluemoosesoap@gmail.com N.B. A few weeks before the start of the municipal elections, the importance of increasing the political awareness of the next generation is important. The Fédération Québécoise des Municipalities recently organized two round-table meetings. The purpose of these meetings was to entice more young people and women into municipal politics by focusing on explaining the role of elected municipal officials: an unknown and sometimes badly perceived position. The results were made on the Municipality's Facebook page.
