Nothing makes me happier than to see a group of very young black kids, especially girls, out on a golf course. Recently I had the privilege of spending a morning with a group of girls being mentored by Progressive Women In Golf and coached by a Qualified female PGA coach. Their ages ranged from 10 to 12 years old. These young girls, the possible future Nobuhle Dlamini‘s, were so happy to be there, taking in everything that was fed to them. They are hungry to learn, it’s such a beautiful sight. Watching them I could see some swings that have incredible potential and a natural ability that just needs to be nurtured. Some of the girls told me they loved this game and want to play forever. Yes forever is how long these girls want to play and my response was, yes, it is a forever kinda game but forever comes with dedication, persistence, passion, skill and knowing that you are entering a territory as the minority. The challenges will be far beyond just their physical and skillful abilities. really one that happened because I had speed and the schools coach found out about it. PLAY FAIR ... “Play the course as you find it; play the ball as it lies. If you can’t do either then play fair. In order to play fair, you need to know the rules of golf.” NEAREST POINT OF RELIEF From experience and feedback, a lot of golfers interpret their “nearest point of relief” (NPR) as the point that is most ‘convenient’ for them when taking relief. The definition of the “nearest point of relief” is the reference point for taking relief without penalty from the interference by an immoveable obstruction (Rule 24-2), an abnormal ground condition (Rule 25-1) or a wrong putting green (Rule 25-3). It is the point on the course nearest to where the ball lies: i. that is not nearer the hole, and ii. where, if the ball were so positioned, no interference by the condition from which relief is sought would exist for the stroke the player would have made from the original position if the condition were not there. Note: In order to determine the nearest point of relief accurately, the player should use the club with which he would have made his next stroke if the condition were not there to simulate the address position, direction of play and swing for such a stroke. To illustrate, let’s go through a few scenarios. In these scenarios, the following assumptions are made: a. The format of play is Stroke Play; b. An example is their management of waste which fortuitously aligns with the World Environment day theme of beating plastic pollution. Keeping up with the Joneses... During May, I was fortunate to be invited to the Canon S.A . Open Disabled Championship held at the beautiful Magalies Park Estate. The players teed off in pouring rain with the temperature at 3 degrees ! Not a single moan or groan. “ I am pleased to be well enough to play this wonderful game” was the general comment from these fantastic golfers and the scoring was unreal with medal rounds in the 70s. The Overall winner was Mike Browne from England followed closely by a number of local golfers and it was great to see the commaraderie which was very evident among this group of happy golfers. The World of Golf is the perfect venue for the golf beginner and I believe it’s the first stepping stone in increasing the much needed club membership. I understand The World of Golf, followed by Play More Golf. Members have over 8 000 members who have joined clubs around the Country. It’s good to see SA’s Big 3 - Louis, Charl and Branden are doing well in the US and Europe and hopefully we might have a winner at the US Open? On the local scene its good to see the tour making use of the Royal Swazi Sun golf course for a number of events. Always a favourite venue among the local pros. It’s very cold in Joburg and I’m looking forward to 5 days at Zimbali on the balmy North Coast of KZN. Don’t Forget we are off to Selborne in July – No Jerseys needed - hopefully. See you on the tee.
