It was clear from the excitement at the event that the jobs and economic investment meant a great deal to the community. I’ve seen that same optimism in communities around the country that are helping to power our digital economy. And I’m proud to say that our U.S. footprint is growing rapidly:
In the last year, we’ve hired more than 10,000 people in the U.S. and made over $9 billion in investments. Our expansion across the U.S. has been crucial to finding great new talent, improving the services that people use every day, and investing in our business. Today we’re announcing over $13 billion in investments throughout 2019 in data centers and offices across the U.S., with major expansions in 14 states. These new investments will give us the capacity to hire tens of thousands of employees, and enable the creation of more than 10,000 new construction jobs in Nebraska, Nevada, Ohio, Texas, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Virginia. With this new investment, Google will now have a home in 24 total states, including data centers in 13 communities. 2019 marks the second year in a row we’ll be growing faster outside of the Bay Area than in it. This growth will allow us to invest in the communities where we operate, while we improve the products and services that help billions of people and businesses globally. Our new data center investments, in particular, will enhance our ability to provide the fastest and most reliable services for all our users and customers. As part of our commitment to our 100 percent renewable energy purchasing, we’re also making significant renewable energy investments in the U.S. as we grow. Our data centers make a significant economic contribution to local communities, as do the associated $5 billion in energy investments that our energy purchasing supports. The order elevates the priority of AI R&D in federal agencies and calls for reallocation of research investment into the technology. The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence will oversee the initiative. The administration also called upon regulatory agencies and other stakeholders such as NIST to create guidance and standards for AI technologies. Federal agencies were tasked with improving access to federal data, models and computing resources for AI research and development. The administration affirmed the importance of AI for national competitiveness and security, but also acknowledged the impact it will have on America's workers, calling for greater education and training of a workforce capable of using AI. 5G e Industry 4.0: grande test bed e trial in UK trial molto complesso e articolato che comprende vari scenari dai big data ai sensori alla security It’s a big day in Worcester, as the Worcestershire 5G Consortium has just teamed up with Worcester Bosch to launch a 5G testbed in the latter’s factory. This is the UK’s first 5G factory trial and it’s seen as a huge step towards Industry 4.0 (aka the fourth industrial revolution). The test will involve things like using 5G to increase factory output, using Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for preventative maintenance and real-time feedback, and using data analytics to predict potential failure. These technologies should allow Worcester Bosch to react in real time to things that are happening in the factory and even pre-empt problems, so they can be solved before they strike. Security is also a focus of these trials, with QinetiQ designing security into the network and applications in what’s known as 'security by design' – essentially building the tech from the ground up with security in mind. The trials will all test end-to-end application performance and should lay the groundwork for the wider availability of 5G in factories, which could prove transformative to the industry. But this is just one of many 5G trials across many different industries. Indeed, the Worcestershire 5G Consortium is one of numerous government-backed programmes exploring 5G. So hopefully by the time the first commercial 5G networks go live later this year the UK will be ready for them. Investigation finds EU’s net neutrality policy is failing operators and consumers Analisi molto chiara di come la NN non ha portato vantaggi ai consumatori in Europa e sulle differenze tra i vari paesi US policy hasn’t delivered what it promised either, with broadband infrastructure investment falling for the first time in three years. A new piece of research published after a year-long investigation into the EU’s net neutrality policy found it is damaging operators’ business and ignoring what users want. The policy is due for review this year, but the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications’ (BEREC} entrenched views are a cause for concern, according to John Strand. Over the past year Strand Consult fought to create transparency in BEREC's work but faced opposition to legal requests made under Europe’s freedom of information laws. Evenutally, Strand Consult succeeded in gathering the minutes of more than 40 meetings on net neutrality behind closed doors, many of which were heavily redacted. Here is a brief summary of the main findings: • EU policymakers wrongly assume connection speeds will increase linearly indefinitely, regardless of whether users want to pay for higher speeds or applications need them. This fixation with speed has limited consumers’ choice of preferred features like flexible pricing, service quality, safety, durability, and so on and amounts to a regulatory taking of consumers’ and producers’ welfare without compensation. • BEREC’s preferred group of stakeholders are advocacy organizations AccessNow, EDRi, ISOC, and BEUC, all of which apart from BEUC have received funding from Google and only deal with consumers in the capacity of ISP customers. Yet information from these organisations is how BEREC claims to know what all consumers want. Columbus, Ohio, is piloting a fleet of autonomous electric shuttles as part of a multimillion-dollar smart transportation initiative "multimilion dollar transport initiative" ... senza soldi non si va lo ntano! Photo: Smart Columbus The May Mobility self-driving shuttle seen here driving into downtown Columbus, Ohio can hold up to six passengers. Visitors to Columbus, Ohio, have a new way to see the city’s downtown attractions. A fleet of electric, self-driving vehicles now shuttle passengers around a cluster of museums and parks, using sensors and software in lieu of engines and auto parts. The pilot project, which began in mid-December, belongs to a larger statewide effort to improve road safety and mobility in this car-dependent capital. Smart Columbus, launched in 2016 after the city bested 77 mid-sized U.S. cities for a pool of “smart transportation” funding. The U.S. Department of Transportation granted Columbus up to $40 million, while Vulcan Inc., the private company of late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, will chip in up to $10 million. The program aims to develop advanced data and intelligent systems technologies to solve problems plaguing many urban transportation networks: traffic congestion, accidents, tailpipe pollution, commuter delays and inaccessibility. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took a victory lap on Twitter Thursday over news that Amazon is scrapping its plan to build a new headquarters in Queens. “Anything is possible: today was the day a group of dedicated, everyday New Yorkers & their neighbors defeated Amazon’s corporate greed, its worker exploitation, and the power of the richest man in the world,” she tweeted. The freshman Democratic lawmaker had been a vocal opponent of the deal to lure the online retail giant to Long Island City — which would’ve given Amazon $3 billion in city and state subsidies in exchange for bringing a projected 25,000 jobs to the area. Amazon said it was pulling out of the plans because “a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us.” Source: https://nypost.com/2019/02/14/ocasio-cortez-cheers-as-amazon-scraps-nyc-headquarters Lumos lights up 10G PON in rural Virginia with ADTRAN Un altro caso di lancio di servizio commerciale FTTH a 10 Gbps per utenti business e consumer, dopo quello di Iliad , Singapore e vari altri Lumos Networks is deploying ADTRAN's 10G fiber access portfolio to deliver network-wide 10Gbps or 10G fiber services for small business customers in rural Virginia. Lumos Networks, which has been an ADTRAN customer for nearly a decade, is using the ADTRAN Total Access 5000 fiber broadband platform as the cornerstone of its access network. The carrier is now using the ADTRAN software-defined access (SD-Access) architecture. “The number of applications that require more robust broadband services continues to grow for both residential and small business customers, especially with emerging technologies accelerating network demands,” said Lumos Networks SVP and General Manager Diego Anderson. “Our partnership with ADTRAN positions us to create reliable connections with our customers while delivering a level of distinguishing service and support over a fiber-based infrastructure. The initial product offering will include tiered symmetrical speed profiles of two, four and eight gigabits per second for delivering higher-speed solutions to meet evolving customer requirements. We also anticipate increasing speed profiles in the future based on the flexibility provided within this platform.”
“Lumos Networks is committed to serve as the leading provider of fiber broadband services in each of its markets so that its customers can reap the benefits that next-generation 10G services bring to communities and individual customers,” stated ADTRAN’s Vice President and Head of Sales for the Americas Harris Razak. As Amazon.com Inc. and Google work to place their smart speakers at the center of the internet- connected home, both technology giants are expanding the amount of data they gather about customers who use their voice software to control other gadgets. For several years, Amazon and Google have collected data every time someone used a smart speaker to turn on a light or lock a door. Now they’re asking smart-home gadget makers such as Logitech and Hunter Fan Co. to send a continuous stream of information. In other words, after you connect a light fixture to Alexa, Amazon wants to know every time the light is turned on or off, regardless of whether you asked Alexa to toggle the switch. Televisions must report the channel they’re set to. Smart locks must keep the company apprised whether or not the front door bolt is engaged. This information may seem mundane compared with smartphone geolocation software that follows you around or the trove of personal data Facebook Inc. vacuums up based on your activity. But even gadgets as simple as light bulbs could enable tech companies to fill in blanks about their customers and use the data for marketing purposes. Having already amassed a digital record of activity in public spaces, critics say, tech companies are now bent on establishing a beachhead in the home. “You can learn the behaviors of a household based on their patterns,” says Brad Russell, who tracks smart home products for researcher Parks Associates Inc. “One of the most foundational things is occupancy. There’s a lot they could do with that.”

Utilizing newly available 5G in the trial areas, the study's aim is to test low-latency connectivity and on-demand streaming AR & VR content can be leveraged toward alternative therapies administered to keep patients comfortable, calm, and mentally engaged. It's the latest in a growing number of efforts to use mixed reality technologies to deliver medical care to patients. By one estimate, the global market for AR & VR in healthcare will top $6 billion by 2025. A more robust body of evidence will be needed, however, for healthcare providers to outlay big money on alternative treatments in the long run. Hey, Siri: Read My Lips - Silent speech recognition enables covert communication anche i muti potranno parlare ... Photo: Lorrie LeJeune Arnav Kapur, a researcher in the Fluid Interfaces group at the MIT Media Lab, demonstrates the AlterEgo device, which can decipher words iterated silently with the mouth closed. Called “silent speech recognition,” the technology essentially reads lips. Users mouth the words of a command or message, and the device deciphers the words, based on the movements of the face and neck. The feat can be accomplished using surface electromyography, or sEMG. Electrodes are placed on the skin at key places around the mouth, along the jaw, under the chin or on the neck. Muscle movements in those areas generate neuromuscular signals—essentially an electrical code. Algorithms trained on silent speech then translate the electrical signals, decoding what the user is saying.
