2) In what way has your compositional voice and outlook towards composition changed in recent years, and what has been the driving force behind this? Listening to a lot more varied music has changed the way I compose a lot. It doesn't feel like it but since starting my studies at the RNCM in Sep 13 I can hear that my style has changed quite signi-cantly with a lot more thought process going into pieces rather than just writing down what sounds good on a piano. Whilst I'm exposed to a lot of very VERY 'highbrow' and intellectual music at college, I always try to keep the audience and performers in mind, especially in my band music. I'm not a fan of writing music to tick boxes, music is entertainment. 5e composer's job is to provide ideas which are interesting and most importantly enjoyable for performers, who's job it is then to entertain an audience, not educate them. 5ere's de-nitely a time and a place, and learning how that music is created is a big asset to other styles of composition, but I wouldn't like to think any piece I write will have audiences turning their noses up or leaving midway through (as I saw with an NYO concert performing Messiaen in 2012!!) 4) You are looking to promote and perform new music by up and coming composers for the Tenor Horn, can you expand on that? I feel that the Tenor Horn repertoire lately has gone a little bit dry regarding new compositions. 5ere's only really Owen Farr that is pushing to -nd new works for the instrument and widely displaying them to a global market. With my contacts at the RNCM in a number of different genres, I’m trying to -nd new works which are completely apart from anything that's been done for tenor horn before, incorporating electronics, different form of accompaniment and generally just different styles which the instrument isn't known for playing. It would be easy to just get a solo out of the band's library such as Demelza or Cappriccio Brilliante that are great pieces, but have been played by most solo horn players, so my aim is that EVERY solo I play at Black Dyke, won't have been done in this country or ever before. I really want to take the instrument forward and develop it! 50 Shades of Brass Band. Copyright © 2014 Devilish Publishing Music Publishers All Rights Reserved. www.devilishpublishing.com 7
