Serious injury. COVID-19 2021 Tessa Binder, Grace Christian protocol. The Grizzlies were even in a vehicle accident during 2020 Destiny Reimers, Anchorage Christian their road trip to Fairbanks. “This year has been a crazy year for 2018 Bethany Carstens, Nikiski our team,” Grace head coach Pete Johnson said. 2017 Rose Mongoyak, Barrow But the Grizzlies overcame those obstacles, and Johnson said 2016 Madison Akers, Homer senior standout Tessa Binder is the big reason why. 2015 Marian Wamsley, Valdez 2014 Dallas Dickerson, ACS “If Tessa hadn’t of been on this team, it would not have been as 2013 Mimi Wood, Hutchison successful of a season, She’s the glue that stuck everybody 2012 Jenna Buchanan, Galena together,” Johnson said. 2011 Nicole Smith, Barrow Binder was a leader and an inspiration, Johnson said. She was 2010 Debbiey Simmers, ACS also a great player, and coaches across the state agree. Binder 2009 Anna Simmers, Anchorage Christian has been named the Wasilla Lithia Dodge/Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches 3A Girls 2008 Anna Simmers, Anchorage Christian Player of the Year. Binder averaged 23 points, seven rebounds, four assists and five steals per 2007 Piggy Pili, Barrow game as a senior. But it’s more than just individual success, Johnson said. Binder makes 2006 Sarah Herrin, Nikiski everyone around her better. 2005 Leah Stepovich, Monroe Catholic “We could stick her with four eighth-graders and she would still score 23 points a game and still 2004 Leah Stepovich, Monroe Catholic encourage them,” Johnson said. ‘That’s the big thing about Tessa. She is such an encourager. 2003 Karen Rabung, Nikiski She makes people around her better because of the way she encourages, uplifts, I think that’s what stands out about Tessa, more than her athletic prowess. Her love for her teammates blows 3A GIRLS COACHES OF THE YEAR: my mind.” 2021 Curtis Berry, Seward Johnson said Binder was the leader as the Grizzlies worked through all of the ups and 2020 Gary Lamar, King Cove downs. “When we started off we didn’t have very many girls. Everybody’s thinking we’re probably 2019 David Wightman, Galena not going to be able to play because of the COVID restrictions and all of that stuff,” Johnson 2018 Scott Anderson, Nikiski said. Johnson said as some people fixated on masks and pandemic protocol, Binder just wanted 2017 Scott Anderson, Nikiski to play. 2016 Chad Felice, Homer 2015 Scott Anderson, Nikiski “Tessa came out and said even if we only have two games, I’m in. Even if we only have one game I’m in,” Johnson said. When Grace lost a key player to a serious injury in Valdez, Binder 2014 Beth Buchanan, Galena encouraged two others to play. One worked her way into the starting lineup. During the Fairbanks 2013 Darrin Powers, Anchorage Christian road trip, the team van was in an accident after hitting black ice. Nobody was hurt, Johnson said. 2012 Levi Duca, Dillingham Binder helped her teammates out of the van and find their belongings. 2011 Jenny Benson, Hutchison 2010 Rytan Meyers, Barrow Johnson said Binder, a skilled and athletic point guard, is also a coach on the floor. 2009 Daniel Skipworth, Anchorage Christian “She doesn’t even need a coach on the bench,” Johnson said. “She could coach on the floor as 2008 Daniel Skipworth, Anchorage Christian she’s playing and her team would be successful. Her basketball I.Q. is up there.” 2007 Ryan Myers, Barrow And there is also a deep love for the game. 2006 Ward Romans, Nikiski “She loves basketball. She eats, sleeps, dreams basketball,” Johnson said. Johnson said Binder 2005 Michael Lantagne, Monroe Catholic has drawn interest from programs at the next level and is excited about her college basketball 2004 Michael Lantagne, Monroe Catholic future. “She’s got fabulous potential,” Johnson said. “Wherever she goes she’s going to be an 2003 Ward Romans, Nikiski impact player.” And that’s on and off the court, Johnson said. “You want someone in the locker ** Before 2003, there was no separate award room who’s keeping everyone’s head on straight and who people respect,” Johnson said. for 3A player or coach of the year. “People respect Tessa because of the way that she plays and she uses that as a platform. She ** Please visit the AABC website for Players has that influence because she has that gift to play basketball that God’s given her.” and/or Coaches of the year prior to 2003. 2021 3A BOYS AABC WASILLA LITHIA DODGE ALL-STATE TEAM 3A Boys 2021 Player of the Year: Quinn McHenry, Monroe Catholic 3A Boys 2021 Coach of the Year: Frank Ostanik, Monroe Catholic 3A FIRST TEAM 3A SECOND TEAM 3A THIRD TEAM Quinn McHenry, Monroe Catholic Clayton Beachy, Homer RJ Alstrom, Mount Edgecumbe Malachi Bradley, Monroe Catholic Jamin Crow, Bethel Ben Bialik, Delta Luke Lentfer, Grace Christian Josh Davis, Anchorage Christian JD McGee, Anchorage Christian Jase McCullough, Monroe Catholic Hayden Howard, Houston Matt Sanders, Anchorage Jaren Miller, Grace Christian Max Pfieffenberger, Seward Christian Dawson Schaeffer, Nome Monroe senior earns top honor By Jeremiah Bartz | Frontiersman.com Quinn McHenry has continued to evolve during his four years with the Monroe Catholic varsity program. He found a role as a shooter during his freshman season, and joined the starting lineup as a sophomore. Now the Monroe senior and three- year starter is among Alaska’s elite. McHenry has been named 3A BOYS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR the Wasilla Lithia Dodge/Alaska Association of Basketball 2021 Quinn McHenry, Monroe Catholic Coaches 3A Boys Player of the Year. 2020 Jalen Freeman, Valdez “He continues to improve and progress,” Monroe head coach 2019 Orlando Lozano, Anchorage Christian Frank Ostanik said. McHenry’s shooting has always stood 2018 Tobin Karlberg, Grace Christian out. “The first thing I think that people recognize is that he’s 2017 Tobin Karlberg, Grace Christian 6-5 and he can shoot the ball well, and he has decent range,” 2016 Kamaka Hepa, Barrow Ostanik said. “Having somebody with size that can shoot the 2015 Levi Auble, Anchorage Christian ball makes him a little bit unique. I think that was the first thing 2014 Scooter Bynum, Monroe Catholic 2013 Gus Simmers, Anchorage Christian that was noticeable about Quinn.” 2012 Gus Simmers, Anchorage Christian Ostanik said McHenry’s defined role as a freshman involved 2011 Christian Leckband, Nome shooting the basketball. 2010 Jeremy Head, Nome “He did those things as a freshman. He was surrounded by 2009 Leif Karlberg, Grace Christian really good players who could kick it to him and all he had to do was hit the shot,” Ostanik said. 2008 Kyle Fossman, Haines But throughout his four years, McHenry’s game continued to evolve. “This year his game has 2007 Cameron Severson, Petersburg expanded. He can score in more ways,” Ostanik said. “He scores a little bit more now in the post, 2006 Lonnie Ridgeway, Heritage Christian a little bit more now on the glass.” But the improvement goes beyond just scoring. 2005 Jared Reando, Heritage Christian “He’s always been a decent rebounder. I think he’s a better rebounder. He’s bigger and stronger. 2004 Carl Arts, Valdez He rebounds in traffic at a higher level. He’s able to take care of the ball,” Ostanik said. “He’s able 2003 Raymond Douville, Craig to possess the ball in traffic at a level he wasn’t able to do in the past. He’s improved in all of 3A BOYS COACHES OF THE YEAR those areas.” In November of 2020, McHenry signed his National Letter of Intent to play college 2021 Frank Ostanik, Monroe Catholic basketball at Division II Sonoma State of the California Collegiate Athletic Association. “I think 2020 Al Plan, Seward that’s a good level and that’s a good league,” Ostanik said. “I think it makes a lot of sense. They 2019 Todd Wegner, Valdez seemed to want him. It’s always good to be someplace where they covet you. I think that’s 2018 Todd Wegner, Valdez important for a kid.” Ostanik said McHenry’s new home at the California school will also be close 2017 Frank Ostanik, Monroe Catholic 2016 Reid Kornstad, Nikiski to where his family plans to relocate. “I think there are so many benefits to where he is going,” 2015 Jason Boerger, Grace Christian Ostanik said. Ostanik said McHenry’s family has been an important part of the senior’s continued 2014 Chuck Boerger, Grace Christian success. 2013 Dave Cronk, Bethel “His parents have been extraordinarily from the standpoint they have high expectations for their 2012 Chuck Boerger, Grace Christian son and have no problem with their son being coached and challenged,” Ostanik said. “I think 2011 Frank Ostanik, Monroe Catholic he’s been fortunate. Not every child has parents that hold them accountable and understand what 2010 Jeremy Arnhart, Barrow it takes to play at the next level. And he certainly does. I think that’s been a key ingredient in 2009 Patrick Callahan, Nome having success. Obviously he’s played an important role in that as well. But the parents have 2008 Steve Fossman, Haines been critical.” 2007 Rick Brock, Petersburg Overall, Ostanik said McHenry is a valuable person to a school on and off the court. “Quinn is an 2006 Brad Lauwers, Heritage Christian 2005 Brad Lauwers, Heritage Christian exceptional student. He’s a kid who is never going to cause anybody grief. Whoever coaches 2004 Todd Wegner, Valdez Quinn is going to be able to focus on simply coaching basketball. They’re not going to have to 2003 James Carle, Craig worry about him being a knucklehead someplace or doing the wrong thing,” Ostanik said. “He’ll always represent your organization at the highest level. You won’t have to worry about him being ** 1992-2008, 1A and 2A were combined on eligible. Those guys are a pleasure to coach and Quinn will very much be that for the guy he same ballot plays for.” ** Please visit the AABC website for Players and/or Coaches of the year prior to 2003. It was at a (Cook 4A GIRLS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR Inlet Conference) tournament game in the quarterfinals at 2021 Amelia Uhila, Bartlett West. I told one of my assistant coaches, if she’s not 2020 Chasity Horn, Chugiak (Division I), I don’t know what is,” Smith said. Smith was 2019 Alissa Pili, Dimond right. The Bartlett senior standout will play women’s college 2018 Alissa Pili, Dimond basketball for Division I Portland State University next year. 2017 Alissa Pili, Dimond Uhila has also been recognized as the best in the state. 2016 Ruthy Hebard, West Valley Uhila has been named the Wasilla Lithia Dodge/Alaska 2015 Ruthy Hebard, West Valley 2014 Chanel Bookert, West Anchorage Assoc. of Basketball Coaches 4A Girls Player of the Year. 2013 Kyla Dinkel, Wasilla “I tell anyone, Bartlett High School basketball’s success is a 2012 Alyssa Hutchins, Wasilla direct reflection of Amelia Uhila coming to Bartlett in 2017,” 2011 Keiahnna Engel, Dimond Smith said. “I don’t think we would have been as successful 2010 Keiahnna Engel, Dimond if she would have never come.” On March 20, Uhila helped 2009 Jenna Johnson, Wasilla lead the Bartlett girls to their first CIC title in 29 years. 2008 Sarah Watzke, Chugiak The four-year starter has amassed historic totals during her 2007 Talisa Rhea, Juneau-Douglas Golden Bears career. Entering the CIC tourney, Uhila had 2006 Talisa Rhea, Juneau-Douglas 1,540 points, 492 rebounds, 486 assists and 392 steals. Smith said Uhila led the Golden 2005 Talisa Rhea, Juneau-Douglas Bears in scoring, assists and steals in each of her four years. Uhila also led Bartlett in 2004 Chandice Cronk, Wasilla 2003 Ashley Mickens, East rebounding in two of those four years, and was second the other two years. Smith said Uhila has always been talented. The big thing that’s changed, is Uhila is now the leader. Smith said 4A GIRLS COACHES OF THE YEAR when was she an underclassman, Bartlett had seniors to be the voice of the team. Uhila 2021 Clarence Smith Jr., Bartlett didn’t have to be the leader. Now she’s stepped up into that role. 2020 Charlie Engel, West Anchorage “We have eight freshman. They look up to her. She’s busting her butt in practice and they try 2019 Clarence Smith Jr., Bartlett to match that intensity,” Smith said. Smith said he likes Portland State as the future home for 2018 Laura Ingham, East Anchorage 2017 Ryan Hales, Chugiak Uhila. “I think it’s a great fit. It’s not too far from her family. She’s very family oriented. It’s not 2016 Jim Young, Dimond too far to go watch her play,” Smith said. 2015 Jeannie Hebert-Truax, Wasilla Smith said Uhila has both the skill set and the intangibles to be able to compete for a role on 2014 Amy Fogle, Kodiak the team right away, and has great potential at the Division I level. 2013 Stephanie Smiley, Kodiak “The sky’s the limit for her,” Smith said. Overall, Smith said Uhila is a good student and 2012 Steve Caciari, West Valley person, “She’s probably the most humble person you’ll ever meet,” Smith said. “To see her in 2011 Lesslie Knight, Juneau-Douglas the hallways at Bartlett, to see her in public you wouldn’t know she’s a star basketball player. 2010 Tim Helvey, West She’s a very mild-mannered kid,” Smith said. “She’s a well-rounded person.” 2009 Tracy Adams, Chugiak 2008 Don Witzel , Colony 2007 Jeannie Hebert-Truax, Wasilla 2006 Jim Young, Dimond 2005 Lesslie Knight, Juneau-Douglas 2004 Jim Young, Dimond 2003 Jon Schroeder, Chugiak ** Please visit the AABC website for Players and/or Coaches of the year prior to 2003. Colony head coach Tom Berg said the key to 4A BOYS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR McMahon’s overall success has been the big leaps he makes 2021 Patrick McMahon, Colony from season to season. 2020 Patrick McMahon, Colony “If you want to be really, really good, I’d say every summer you’ve 2019 Sullivan Menard, Colony got to take a big jump,” Berg said of his advice to McMahon. 2018 Erik Kelly, Juneau 2017 Moses Miller, East Anchorage And that’s what he did. 2016 Da’Zhon Wyche, West Anchorage Now McMahon is on the top of Alaska’s basketball ladder once 2015 Da’Zhon Wyche, West Anchorage again. McMahon has been named the Wasilla Lithia Dodge/ 2014 Reece Robinson, Service Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches 4A Player of the Year 2013 Adam Klie, Service for the second straight season. 2012 Connor Devine, Wasilla 2011 Devon Bookert, West Anchorage Berg said McMahon had the physicality to play 25 minutes of 2010 Travis Thompson, Dimond varsity basketball every night as a freshman. As McMahon 2009 Colton Lauwers, Dimond progressed through the program, goals were set. During 2008 Kevin Winford, Bartlett McMahon’s sophomore year, the goal was to score more on offense and decide to be a part of the 2007 Jesse Bean, Wasilla 2006 Ramon Harris, West Anchorage game plan on defense. Everything started to come together during McMahon’s junior season. 2005 Mario Chalmers, Bartlett “Last year was just nuts. He really did engage on both ends of the floor. He figured out he could truly 2004 Mario Chalmers, Bartlett just dominate a game on both sides of the floor,” Berg said. Now McMahon, a senior, is viewed as 2003 Mario Chalmers, Bartlett Alaska’s top talent by most. McMahon is averaging 27 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks and two assists 4A BOYS COACHES OF THE YEAR per game this season. He is also shooting 57 percent from the field and 39 percent from beyond the 2021 Chuck Martin, East Anchorage arc. McMahon, a 6-foot-6 standout, is projected as a guard at the Division I level. 2020 Colton Growden, West Valley “A 6-6 win, that’s a Division I wing,” Berg said. McMahon has stood out all over the floor for the Knights. 2019 Chuck Martin, East Anchorage 2018 Brad Lauwers, Dimond Part of that goes back to taking the big leaps, Berg said. “A big jump for Patty last year, (we asked) 2017 Ryan Engebretsen, Wasilla can you guard a wing?” Berg said. McMahon answered the question. 2016 Robert Casperson, Juneau-Douglas “When I talk about his dominance his junior year, his jump last year was on the defensive end,” Berg 2015 Eric Stockhausen, Ketchikan said. “He was good offensively as a sophomore. He had the offensive side of things figured out.” 2014 Dave Andersen, Kodiak 2013 Josh Muehlenkamp, East Anchorage In November of 2020, McMahon signed his National Letter of Intent to play for Division I Montana 2012 Rob Golosich, Dimond State. Berg said McMahon has a very high ceiling. 2011 Tyler Moor, Service “He could really end up being a dominant player in that league,” Berg said of McMahon in the Big Sky 2010 Rob Galosich, Dimond Conference. 2009 Matthew Johnson, Soldotna 2008 Don Brooks, South Part of that is the fact that McMahon possesses both physical tools and the intangibles, Berg said. 2007 Jeff Bowker, Colony “He has all of the genetic parts. He has the right temperament,” Berg said. Berg said sometimes the 2006 Kevin Fullmer, Chugiak best players are the most high strung. But not McMahon, he said. 2005 Jeff Bowker, Colony 2004 Chuck White, West Anchorage “He’s one of the most even keel superstars I’ve ever coached. He goes about his business. I’ve never 2003 Ronnie Chalmers, Bartlett had to talk to him about playing hard,” Berg said. Berg also said he sees potential for a shot at the level beyond college. “I’ve coached a lot of good players, and no disrespect. But (McMahon) is the ** Please visit the AABC website for Players and/or Coaches of the year prior to 2003. first I’d say could play pro somewhere,” Berg said.
