iREAD Summer Reading Program
®
iREAD® Summer Reading programming is developed by librarians for librarians and features activities,
graphics, crafts, reading lists, incentives, and much more for children, teens, and adults.
As always with iREAD Summer Reading, there is no membership fee required or time limit imposed. You
can use the graphics and programming year-round to support your library!
The theme for iREAD’s 2022 summer reading program is Read Beyond the Beaten Path. The broad motif
of “summer camp at the library” can encompass a world of different summer experiences, from outdoor
activities such as hiking, campfires, stories, and s’mores to nature programs, arts and crafts, music, and
so much more!
Read Beyond the Beaten Path combines camp, adventure, and skill development. STEM programs are
very easy to incorporate into this theme because of its nature and outdoor aspects, but you can also have
space camp and math camp and science camp. These are all wonderful activities for participants to earn badges.

The benefits of summer reading are clear. National research finds that students who participate in library
summer reading programs score higher on reading achievement tests at the beginning of the next school
year than those who do not participate. The iREAD mission is to provide libraries with the tools to bridge
this summer gap, while inspiring literacy and lifelong learning.
As a coordinated, self-supporting effort developed by the Illinois Library Association and librarians, every
purchase from iREAD helps to promote and assist the great work of libraries.

CHALLENGE COINS
Challenge coins are a highly respected military tradition for recognizing accomplishments and instilling a sense of belonging.
The tradition of giving coins in the military goes back as far as the Roman Empire.
Traditionally a challenge coin bears an organization’s insignia or emblem and is carried by the organization’s members.
They are given to prove membership when challenged, to enhance morale, and are also collected by service members. In
practice, challenge coins are presented by unit commanders in recognition of special achievement by a member of the unit.
They are also exchanged in recognition of visits to an organization.
Stories suggest that coins began to be used in a “challenge” after World War II, when U.S. military personnel adapted a
German tavern tradition. If someone calls a “coin check,” whoever does not have a coin buys drinks for everyone!
Every summer since 2013, iREAD has been producing a Summer Reading Challenge Coin for our partners in the Department
of Defense—Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (DoD-MWR) military installation libraries. We are pleased to offer the 2022

3 EASY WAYS TO PLACE AN ORDER
1. Order online at ireadprogram.org: You can pay via credit card or select the “bill me later”
option.
2. Create a quote online: This option saves your cart for two weeks (depending on items
availability), allows you to add or remove items from the cart, or convert the quote into an order.
Please note that a quote needs to be converted to an order by the customer. iREAD does not
monitor quotes, they are simply a tool for the customer.
3. E-mail your order to iread@ila.org: When emailing your order, include the following
information: item SKU number & quantity; shipping and billing address. iREAD Customer
Service will email you back a quote. Once confirmed, your order will be placed within 24 hours.
