Hello and thank you for your interest in Watermark University! The foundation of Watermark University (WU) is to provide meaningful opportunities to learn, teach and grow, resulting in a life of overall well-being. Research shows that learning and keeping our mind active and sharp supports healthy aging. At Watermark Retirement Communities® we are committed to encourage our residents and associates to lead balanced lives, full of meaning and purpose, grounded in self- awareness and infused with curiosity. Our Watermark University courses help achieve this goal. While we continue to social distance and remain healthy, we have found new ways to promote meaning and purpose by utilizing technology and our in-house channel. We are hoping to add more in person classes while following precautions as the year progresses. This catalog is subject to change depending on evolving Watermark Covid Task Force guidelines. You will hear true stories that will amaze and astound you as they intertwine the world of reality with the unknown. Experience miracles from around the world that will captivate our inquisitive minds. Don't miss these angels among us. Start date to be determined. Around The World Wine Every First & Frensis Mulla Tiffany Lounge Tasting Third Tuesday • 3:00 PM Join Frensis in his wine tasting journey around the world. Not only will you learn about the variety of wines but also the region they came from. He will also provide a variety of appetizers to go along with the wines. Please sign up for this fun interactive class being held in the Tiffany Lounge. January 15 & February Basic Sign Language Donna Davis Tiffany Lounge 19 • 1:00 PM Join Donna in learning basic sign language such as finger spelling the manual alphabet. This class will include basic signs and how to sign a song or two. (No need to carry a tune!) Sign language is a complete, natural language that has the same linguistic properties as spoken language, with grammar that differs from English. Sign language is expressed by movements of the hands and face. Not only will you learn basic sign language, this activity is great for hand, finger and brain activities as well. Monday & Friday Balance & Strength Colette Alexander Pool Side • 10:00 AM This fun exercise class focuses on various levels of fitness and is designated to increase muscle strength, flexibility, range of movement, fall prevention, and activities of daily living. The class can be adapted to various levels which include using a chair for seated exercise or standing support. Your heart will be pumping through a variety of exercises that focus on the entire body using hand held weights, leg weights and elastic bands. Please bring your own equipment. This is a story based on an Athabascan Indian legend passed along for many generations from mothers to daughters of the upper Yukon River Valley in Alaska. This is a suspenseful, shocking, ultimately inspirational tale of two women abandoned by their tribe during a brutal winter famine. Though these women have been known to complain more than contribute, they must now either survive on their own or die trying. In this book, the author has created two heroines of steely determination. Black History: Every Tuesday In Film Channel 195 A Retrospective February • 2:00 PM This comprehensive DVD compilation features an in-depth collection of documentaries and programs chronicling the contributions and accomplishments of the most prominent and influential African- Americans throughout the history of the United States. From the oppression and hardship during the time of the Civil War to civil rights movements that paved the way to this country's first African-American president. Every Other Wednesday Brain Fitness Linda Roberts Inn Ice Cream Parlor • 1:30 PM Join Linda Roberts as she incorporates a variety of activities that will stimulate the production of acetylcholine (when paying attention), norepinephrine (when encountering something new), and dopamine (when feeling successful). Linda uses brain fitness as a proven exercise to sharpen cognitive skills. Have fun while learning to think faster, have a higher level of focus and remember more. Calligraphy Essentials Coursera January 26 • 2:00 PM Channel 195 Curious about calligraphy? COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Creating Mini Zen Michelle Sayre January 7 • 2:00 PM Pool Side Gardens Zen gardens are one of the most breathtaking sights you’ll ever see. These beautiful gardens are Japanese rock gardens, or “dry landscape” gardens. They were originally created in Japan to assist Zen Buddhist monks with daily meditation and introspection. We can engage in this practice and reap the benefits with our very own mini Zen gardens. We will create a miniature landscape composed of rocks, moss, and other creative objects. Raking patterns in the sand and rearranging rocks helps increase mindfulness, making mini Zen gardens a great activity to unwind during times of stress. Cultivating Calm: Strategies to Relieve Coursera January 14 • 2:00 PM Channel 195 Stress The course has been developed by a Clinical Psychologist and Meditation Teacher, incorporating the latest cutting edge neuroscience with an understanding of eastern philosophies for a holistic approach to mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The course includes: practical, simple tools to reduce physiological stress levels, science of stress reduction, strategies for self-care and self-soothing, finding more balance and meditation. Every First Saturday • Customized Earring Class Marion Hunt Ice Cream Parlor 2:00 PM Back by popular demand this one day class is fun and rewarding. Marion will assist everyone in creating and designing their very own set of earrings. Make a pair for yourself or they would be a great gift for a friend or family member. Cute and Easy Succulent February 12th • Michelle Sayre Pool Side Planters 2:00 PM In this class you will learn how to decorate your own succulent garden and walk away with your very own succulent container garden. Succulents are amazing additions to indoor gardens and are known for being indestructible with little care. They come in almost every color of the rainbow which means they can provide a brilliant pop of color to any setting. They look lovely lining a window sill or as a centerpiece for a breakfast table.

Add some whimsical fun to an outdoor area or potted plant. You will construct sweet little abodes for the various fairies who will be visiting. Tiny houses and furniture placed in a garden make it a little extra special for visiting fairies! February 25 & April 22 French Pastry Class Joseph Brugh Dining Room Patio • 2:00 PM Impressive French pastries are sinfully delicious and not impossible to make! Start with basics then work your way up to indulgent all-time favorites. You’ll learn how to simplify recipes without sacrificing taste. You’re only a recipe away from delighting your family and friends with incredible French desserts. February 8 & 9 Genealogy Basics Tom Hosted Computer Room • 9:00 AM This course, gives you the basic knowledge of methods and data resources available, so you can research and publish your family history. First day topics are: "why study your family history,"" by products of your research determining your goals," "and reviewing genealogy web sites and other web sites which contain historical data." The second day the instructor will spend one half hour with each student starting the Genealogy study. Attendance in the class requires you to have basic computer skills. The class is limited to four students, and is a two-day course, two hours each day. The course will be taught every two weeks on Monday and Tuesday from 9:00-11:00. Advance reservations are required. Monday, Wednesday, Get Moving Linda Roberts and Friday • 9:30 Inn Ice Cream Parlor and 10:30 AM Physical activity provides many health benefits. On the outside, it helps individuals maintain a healthy weight. Internally, physical activity can boost your immune system and mental wellness. Exercise causes the body to release endorphins which help relieve pain and stress. Regular exercise habits can also improve sleep patterns. The morning exercise classes at The Inn are a great way to start the day. We laugh, we work our muscles, and we increase our energy for the rest of the day. These morning exercises will increase range of motion in various joints and utilize many muscle groups. Each session will start with movements that will warm up muscles to prepare them for exercise and wrap up with cool down stretches. Start date to be determined.

Ambassador Dennis Ross will return to explore the current state of the Isreal/Palestinian conflict. Admiral Gary Roughhead will discuss our evolving military. Other topics will be the US under electronic siege and global pandemic. These discussions will help you understand your susceptibility to disease, motivate you to make important changes to reduce health risks or seek medical consultation, They will help enhance your wellbeing and the quality of your life. Its decisions have profoundly shaped not only American law but also our society, as the nation has grown dramatically in population, geographical expanse, racial and ethnic diversity, and technology. Professor Irons is widely respected as an authority on the Supreme Court and constitutional litigation. This course will trace the Court's development from its founding to the present, with a focus on the landmark cases that have reflected conflicts in American society. How To Make Your Own Michelle Sayre April 16th • 2:00 PM Tiffany Lounge Vanilla Extract Who doesn't love the flavor and the smell of vanilla? Michelle will take you through the step by step process of making your very own homemade vanilla extract and discuss all the health benefits of vanilla. Making your own homemade vanilla extract gives your recipe a strong vanilla flavor and you can be certain that there is not any synthetic ingredients (chemicals) in it. Have you seen the price of vanilla extract lately at your local grocery stores? It’s definitely NOT cheap and making your own from scratch can save you money. Basically, it’s more affordable and taste better! Pure vanilla extract can also be used as a health benefit with antibacterial properties to prevent infection. Learn How To Draw Coursera April 15 • 2:00 PM Channel 195 Drawing is a learned skill. Even people who seem insanely 'talented' weren't born that way; this class is for beginners. The instructor's name is Brooke Glaser, a full-time illustrator. Drawing didn't come naturally to her, at first she struggled with it. But now she works as a professional illustrator. In this class, she will share the techniques to draw proportions quickly and accurately, tips for getting in the 'zone' of drawing, and to dive deep into shading. She will share the different types of shadows, where to place them and different tricks for drawing them digitally. Less Stress, More Joy E4You/Coursera January 10 • 2:00 PM Channel 195 Susan Piver, a partner with the Ten Percent Happier meditation community, is a meditation coach who begins her video with a true story about finding joy in a very difficult situation, then guides her listeners through a meditation that brings awareness and joy into our minds.

Line Dancing is one of the best dances out there because you can do it anywhere! Line dancing steps can vary greatly as there are a million combinations that you can learn. Megan will be teaching fun and easy to follow line dances, which are perfect for beginners. Low Impact Fitness Daniel Gerber April 29 • 11:00 Fitness Room Machines Join Daniel in the gym to learn about the low impact fitness machines and the different ways to utilize them. Our fitness machines are easy to use and are gentle on aging joints and muscles. Daniel provides techniques for a variety of specific needs, physical limitations, and fitness levels. Martin Luther King Jr., Film January 11 • 7:00 PM Channel 195 "I Have A Dream" This program frames his inspirational speech, which appears in its entirety, with background on the movement demonstrated through rare footage of early incidents, inserts from King's final speech and Robert Kennedy's words of consolation following the great leader's untimely death. Masterworks of Every Monday • Allen Wolfe Channel 195 American Art 2:00 PM Allen Wolfe will be presenting a course of 24 lectures covering the Masterworks of American Art. "Masterworks of American Art" is taught by Professor William Kloss who taught the course on the Dutch Masters and is the teacher for "Great Artists of the Italian Renaissance." The new course comprises 24 lectures and discussion ranges from the lost Roanoke colony of the 1590s to shortly before the First World War. Movie Classics Every Saturday • Allen Wolfe Channel 195 To Near Classics 2:00 PM Our own Allen Wolfe has an extensive, classic movie collection from the 1930’s to the 2000's. Each Saturday afternoon he will be selecting one of his favorites to feature. Before each film, Allen will share a brief description about the characters and plot. Following the movie, you will be able to discuss your thoughts with friends. The movies feature iconic actors and actresses from the past.
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Every Monday at 9:30, Wednesday at 10:00 AM Moving With Mike Mike Ross Channel 195 & Friday at 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM Enjoy this safe and fun exercise program with your trainer, Mike Ross. All you need is a chair and a water bottle and you're ready to go. The workout includes a 5 minute warm-up that gets blood flowing to the muscles and warms up the joints. The workout is 20 minutes of exercise for balance, leg strength, upper body strength, coordination, and posture. Concludes with a 5 minute cool-down with some relaxing stretching exercises. Sarasota Institute Of Monday, January 4 - Music Mondays Channel 195 Lifetime Learning March 22 • 10:30 AM This season has been designated as the Edward Alley Memorial Season, honoring the producer and host of Music Monday. Ed has created quite a lineup for 2021 and SILL continues to honor his design. The 2021 season will feature some truly remarkable musicians and the format will remain the same - conversation with interesting and personable musicians with musical performances interspersed. These performances will be live streamed on channel 195 every Monday at 10:30 am from January 4th through March 22nd. Participants should wear comfortable footwear for walking a long distance on uneven surfaces. Drinking water will be provided. Participants should wear comfortable shoes for walking on uneven surfaces. South Venice Lemon Bay Scrub Stroll Michelle Sayre March 23 • 8:15 AM Preserve Join Dr. Katherine Clements, ecology and natural resources educator with Sarasota County UF/IFAS Extension and Sustainability, for a stroll through the scrub, a unique environment in an ancient dune system. This habitat is home to a variety of plants and animals. Learn about threatened, endemic and keystone species such as the Florida scrub-jay and gopher tortoise. Appreciate the wonders of the scrub and how we can help protect this dwindling habitat. Participants should wear comfortable footwear for walking in soft sand. Be prepared for limited shade. Paige Cohen and Sea Turtles April 22 • 2:00 PM Inn URL Layla Cohen Join Paige and her daughter Layla as they explain their role as a volunteer at Mote Marine and as Sea Turtle Patrol members. They will also review some sea turtle facts, nesting patterns and what you can do to help keep these wonderful creatures safe and protected! Silk paintings date back to 200 CE in India, where wax resist and Batik techniques are traced. Kathy has mastered the popular technique of silk painting and would like to share it with others. This course will run once a week during the month of February with a limited size group. Water aerobics exercise is a cardio workout combined with muscle toning activities to create a full body limited impact workout. The class uses various exercise formats each week. Our pool is heated to a comfortable temperature and can be used year round. Watercolor Exercise For Coursera April 9 • 2:00 PM Channel 195 Beginners In this beginner watercolor painting tutorial, students will learn basic principles of working with watercolor. Many beginners spend a good amount of time learning the basic technique of water coloring. When it comes to implementing and creating watercolor art, many students find it difficult to follow those principles. The intent is to bridge that gap and apply very simple watercolor principle and techniques through this project. Faculty Biographies NAME OF INSTRUCTOR CLASS NAME Movie Classics & Near Classics and Masterworks of Allen Wolfe American Art Allen has been a resident of the Fountains since June 2015. Allen was a computer programmer and analyst before retiring. Since moving here, he has focused on working out, reading, and listening to music and sharing his extensive movie collection. Anna Hoonhout Guided Imagery Anna Hoonhout was born in Europe and grew up in Chicago. She has now settled down in Sarasota with her husband and daughter Emery! She loves indulging in all that Sarasota has to offer especially the beach, boating and art. She lived in NYC where she finished her Masters in Art Therapy learned about Guided Imagery and would like to share that with you! Carrie Sollitto Texting 101 Carrie has been a member of the Sales and Marketing team at The Fountains for the past 3 years. She is originally from New York and has lived in Florida for the past 11 years. She went to USF and studied communication and broadcasting. She enjoys the beach, spending time with family and friends and enjoys trying new restaurants in the area. Charis Wilson Health and Wellness Lecture Charis is our new Health and Wellness Nurse. She graduated from University of South Florida with a Bachelors Degree in Finance and Nursing. She worked at Sarasota Memorial Hospital on the Cardiac Unit and at the Infectious Disease Association before she came to us. Charis was married in 2012 and has 3 kids(6, 3, 1). When she isn't chasing her kids around she enjoys running and ran in several marathons. She also love to travel and see new places even with all the kids in tow. When she eventually has some quiet time she loves to read. Chuck Bonura Mystery Beach Stroll Chuck is the Transportation Supervisor for the Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods. He was born in New Jersey but has spent the last 40 years in Florida. Chuck received his education at Incarnation School, Cardinal Mooney HS and State College of Florida. Following in his fathers footsteps, Chuck has been in the transportation business for over 25 years. Chuck's hobbies include shark tooth hunting, classic cars, fishing and home projects. When he is not busy navigating the traffic, Chuck enjoys spending time with his family.
NAME OF INSTRUCTOR CLASS NAME Colette Alexander Water Aerobics and Balance and Strength Colette is a Registered Nurse and began her healthcare career in Vermont, specializing in Oncology and Cardiac Care. In 1983 she moved to Florida and received her BA in Psychology from Saint Leo's College in San Antonio Florida. Since that time she has logged in over 26 years experience in various areas of patient care (critical care, open heart and care management). In addition to her extensive clinical experience she attended Ringling School of Art and Design for 4 years and became a licensed massage therapist, specializing in active isolated stretching. Daniel Gerber Low Impact Fitness Machines Daniel is the Director of Operations. Daniel went to the University of Florida and majored in Horticulture. He worked in maintenance at the Oaks Club before he came to the Fountains as the Maintenance Supervisor. He was also a District Maintenance Manager for Lifestyle Family Fitness. Daniel is married with 2 very active boys and he enjoys swimming, riding roller coasters and electric go-carts with them. Dawn Lewis On Line Shopping Dawn is the Sales Director at The Fountains. She was born and raised in Sarasota and has been working at The Fountains since 2007. Dawn graduated from the State College of Florida with a degree in business. In her spare time she loves spending time with her family, volunteering and traveling. Be sure to stop by Dawn's office to meet her new addition to the family, Duke, a very cute and lovable English Bulldog. Donna Davis Basic Sign Language One of our very own talented artist at The Fountains, Donna was an elementary education teacher in Arizona and Florida for 33 years. Donna has degrees in Elementary Ed and Deaf Ed. She has a passion for the arts and teaching others. Frensis Mulla Around The World Wine Tasting Frensis has worked at the fountains for 19 years in dining services and has worked his way up to Director of Dining Services. He is originally from Albania and came to the US when he was 14. He enjoys spending time with his family at the beach, trying out new food venues and has a love for exotic cars. He is full of energy and loves creating a wonderful dining experience for all at The Fountains.
NAME OF INSTRUCTOR CLASS NAME Joseph Brugh French Pastry Class and Cooking With Herbs Joe graduated from the Pittsburg International Culinary Academy Le Cordon Bleu with a degree in Culinary Arts in 2002. Soon after graduation he accepted a position at Meridian Hills Country Club in Indianapolis, Indiana. Working at Meridian he was mentored by Executive Chef Joseph Miller. In 2017 Joe accepted the Executive Chef position at the Meadows Country Club in Sarasota. We are excited to have him back as the Executive Chef here at the Fountains. Kathy McKenzie Silk Painting Kathy started painting in the 1990s, when her children were grown. She explored many different media but found painting on silk was her favorite. She still enjoys painting, sometimes scarves, sometimes framed pieces. Kathy hand painted scarves and sold them in a local shop in Rockport, Massachusetts where she was living, as well as making them for gifts. She loves the way paints/dyes move on the silk, often letting the dyes decide the direction of the piece. Kathy looks forward to sharing the fun with her neighbors. Kristin Buswell DIY Fairy Gardens Kristin was born in Mansfield, OH and moved to Sarasota when she was 10 years old. Kristin attended the University of Florida where she received a degree in Recreation Parks and Tourism. Kristin works in sales at The Fountains. She enjoys swimming and being outdoors. Landyn Park Canvas Uncorked Landyn is the Supervisor of our Concierge at both Independent and Assisted Living. Originally from Sarasota, Landyn has always been an advocate and member of the Art & Culture Movement. As part of a dance company, she put on many 'flash mob' performances at local beaches and downtown festivals. She also performed at the Florida Studio Theatre, The Player's Community Theatre and even learned piano at a young age. Landyn is a senior in College studying for her Bachelors in Technical Writing and Visual Rhetoric at The University of South Florida. Prior to joining the Fountains, she worked at the Longboat Key Club & Resort as a Guest Services Specialist and then as the Events & Group Billings Coordinator. Layla Cohen Sea Turtles Layla is a sophomore at Riverview High School and a member of the Kiltie Band. She has a passion for music and plays the trombone, trumpet, euphonium, vibes, and the piano. She is exploring the idea of going to college to become a music conductor. Layla loves Italian food and sushi. She is a dog lover and has 2 chihuahuas, Max and Cooper. She can't wait to graduate high school and travel the world!

Linda moved to Florida in 2018 with her husband and three dogs. She has a degree in Elementary Education and is a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant. She enjoys watching others find purpose in life, working on crafts of many sorts, and off-roading in her Jeep with her husband. She has enjoyed putting her creativity, her teaching skills, and her knowledge of the human body to keep her residents thriving. Lissett Idarraga Computer Basics Lissett is from Venezuela and graduated with a Computer Science Degree. She worked three years developing computer programs. She has worked in the Dining Services Department at The Fountains for over three years. Lissett enjoys playing soccer and spending time with her family. Lorraine Chimento Oh Yarn It and Book Reading Lorraine is the Human Resources Director at The Fountains. She has been with the company for 15 years. She is originally from Connecticut and has been knitting for over 20 years. Her creativity and knowledge for knitting will inspire beginners to become experts. Marion Hunt Various Classes Marion studied at the University of South Florida. She taught classes at Florida College of Natural Health for twelve years and authored several educational books. Her signature "Superior Facial Massage" DVD is copyrighted in Spanish and English. Marion has held multiple licenses in the beauty industry and was a co- owner of Levittown Beauty Academy in Pennsylvania. She worked for seven years in a Health Care facility as an Activity Assistant. Marion loves theatre and music. She has copyrighted numerous musical lyrics. For relaxation she designs costume jewelry. Michelle Sayre Various Classes Michelle is the Director of Community Life. She has been working with seniors for over 23 years in various settings. Michelle is originally from Texas and graduated from the University of North Texas with a bachelors degree in Therapeutic Recreation and is also a Certified Dementia Practitioner. She enjoys spending time with family, gardening, reading and playing with her fur babies.
NAME OF INSTRUCTOR CLASS NAME Megan Rosploch Line Dancing Megan was born and raised right here is sunny Sarasota where she indulges in all Sarasota has to offer. She frequents the beach with her paddle board as well as involving herself with agriculture, line dancing, and her friends family, and her dog. Megan is the Move In Coordinator for The Fountains. Melody Mishkin Terroir Teachings Melody Mishkin is the Assistant Director of Dining Services. She went to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York and was a Pastry Chef, Sous Chef and Event Manager before coming to Lake Pointe Woods. Melody has worked in Food and Beverage for 15 years in restaurants, hotels and country clubs and has a particular passion for locally sourced ingredients and wine. Melody grew up in the Sarasota area and spends her time outside of work furthering her education and spending time with her family. Paige Cohen Sea Turtles Paige was born and raised in Sarasota. She comes from a large family (6 siblings) and they all still live here in town. She has worked at The Fountains for 8 years; first as the Director of Nursing and is currently the Assisted Living Administrator. She spends her spare time with her husband Matt and daughter Layla. She loves the beach, being on the water, spending time with her two Chihuahuas, and listening to her daughter play music. Peggy Beasley 7 Dimensions of Wellbeing Our LPW Executive Director has enjoyed living in Florida for 47 years with all the activities it has to offer. Peggy enjoys kayaking, boating, fishing, beach geocaching, reading and relaxation. She has been reading about the local ghost stories and is eager to share them with you. Peggy feels fortunate to have worked in the residential and senior housing market for 19 years. Tom Hosted Genealogy Tom is a resident at The Fountains. Tom and his wife retired to Sarasota some twenty years ago, and moved from Darien, Ct. He is a graduate of Georgetown University, School of Foreign Service, with a degree in finance. His career was in corporate finance, working both in the USA and overseas. One of Tom's hobbies is Genealogy. For the last six years Tom has been teaching Genealogy at the Gulf Gate Library. Over 500 have attended his classes. He has also written and published his own children's book, The Naughty Red Fox.
