CHAIR’S WELCOME Dear Leaders, Welcome to our Virtual Winter Leadership Meeting! While I wish we could all be together at La Quinta, I am excited to have you join us for another great lineup of virtual programs, working meetings, wellness activities, and networking events. I am delighted that Palm Springs Mayor Geoff Kors will provide welcome remarks during Thursday’s program and we will have terrific and thought-provoking discussions on our RESPECT theme throughout the meeting. Thursday’s plenary will include a TED-style talk with Jonathan Haidt on civility and how he uses his research to help people understand and respect the moral motives of people with whom they disagree. The Mental Health & Wellness Task Force will kick us off on Friday morning with a discussion on “Maintaining Optimal Health and Wellness Through This COVID Winter.” During Friday’s plenary, David Blankenhorn and Jonathan Rauch will discuss compromise and life lessons on respectful disagreement. Blankenhorn and Rauch spent years arguing on opposite sides of the gay marriage debate and, over time, developed an unlikely friendship. As always, you will have time to meet and catch up with your Section friends at our networking and social events. Wednesday’s Welcome Reception will feature our first Litigation Leader Talent Show and offer interactive networking on Remo. If you missed the reception during the Virtual Fall Leadership Meeting, be sure to review the instructions in the “Things to Know” email about setting up your Remo account. Remo does a great job of replicating the ease and feel of in-person networking. We know you will enjoy Thursday’s “An Evening in the Desert” event as well. Kurt Cyr of Mod Squad Architecture & Design Tours will tell us all about Palm Springs culture and mid-century modern architecture, and we’ll have a special a Rat Pack- themed musical performance from Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr., season six winner of America’s Got Talent. Managing Director Marty Truss will also demonstrate how to make a perfect martini or mocktail during the event. Significant others and children are welcome to join us for the Wednesday and Thursday evening events. Team Reeder is grateful for your time and efforts on behalf of the Section. I hope you have a great meeting and enjoy our Palm Springs-themed events. Best regards, Jim Reeder Chair, ABA Litigation Section 2

PLENARIES The Righteous Mind: Moral Psychology In and Out of the Courtroom Jonathan Haidt, Thomas Cooley Professor of Ethical Leadership at New York University’s Stern School of Business and author of the New York Times Best Seller The Righteous Mind, will give us his observations on the polarization of America and the increasing divide between decent people’s honestly-held views on right and wrong. Utilizing the results of his over 30 years of groundbreaking research on moral psychology, Dr. Haidt will also look at those observations in the context of the role of litigators. Dr. Haidt has agreed to answer any questions our leadership has related to current issues on morality, politics and religion. Speaker: Jonathan Haidt, New York University Stern School of Business, New York, NY Jonathan Haidt is the Thomas Cooley Professor of Ethical Leadership at New York University’s Stern School of Business. He received his B.A. from Yale University in 1985 and his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992. Haidt is a social psychologist whose research focuses on morality–– its emotional foundations, cultural variations, and developmental course. He is the co-developer of Moral Foundations Theory, and of the research site YourMorals.org. He uses his research to help people understand and respect the moral motives of people with whom they disagree. He won three teaching awards from the University of Virginia and one from the governor of Virginia. His four TED talks have been viewed more than 6 million times. Haidt was named a “top 100 global thinker” in 2012 by Foreign Policy magazine, and one of the 65 “World Thinkers of 2013” by Prospect magazine. He is the author of more than 90 academic articles and three books: The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom (2006), The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion (2012), and The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas are Setting Up a Generation for Failure (2018, co-authored with Greg Lukianoff). The last two books became New York Times best sellers. At NYU-Stern, he is applying his research on moral psychology to business ethics, asking how companies can structure and run themselves in ways that will be resistant to ethical failures. Haidt is a founder of Heterodox Academy, a collaboration among nearly 2,500 professors who are working to increase viewpoint diversity and freedom of inquiry in universities. He is also the co-developer of OpenMindPlatform.org, an educational program that teaches people and groups how to have productive conversations across many lines of difference. His next book will be Three Stories About Capitalism: The Moral Psychology of Economic Life, expected in 2022. 6

A 2007 profile in USA Today characterizes David as making “a career of thinking about big issues” and the Institute for American Values as “a catalyst for analysis and debate among those with differing views.” A 2012 profile in the Deseret News describes David as, “A soft-hearted liberal raised in Mississippi and educated at Harvard, he started his career as a civil rights organizer and has since carved out a unique career cutting across ideological lines. He is one of America’s most important liberal thinkers concerned about family issues.” Jonathan Rauch is one of the country’s most versatile and original writers on government, society, and gay issues. A senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, he is the author of six books and many articles and has received the magazine industry’s two leading prizes—the National Magazine Award and the National Headliner Award.
