2021 ONS CONGRESS CONFERENCE Five Learning Tracks. Four Days of Virtual Learning. One Comprehensive Conference. Use this guide to navigate the conference and personalize your ONS Congress™ experience! April 20, 22, 27, and 29, 2021 #ONSCongress • congress.ons.org
Welcome Oncology Nurse Innovators to the 46th Annual ONS Congress! As chair of the ONS Congress Content Planning Team, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 46th Annual ONS Congress. The theme of this year’s meeting—catalyst for innovative care—is right on target for this time we find ourselves in! Every year, a group of your oncology nurse colleagues gathers to form the ONS Congress Content Planning Team. The team reviews evaluations from the previous ONS Congress as well as topic and speaker ideas submitted by ONS members. The team also reviews current practice challenges and works to forecast the hot topics that oncology nurses will want to hear about. It’s never an easy task and, as you are well aware, this year brings additional challenges for meeting planning. I am especially thankful to this year’s team members who had all volunteered for previous ONS Congress Content Planning Teams and were asked to volunteer again. Their previous experience offered a foundation as we innovated and developed new, virtual ways to work and plan ONS Congress. They did an amazing job! ONS Congress is the most comprehensive oncology nursing conference in the country. Our successful format organizes content along five educational tracks: Advanced Practice, Clinical Practice, Leadership/Management/Education, Radiation, and Research. Attendees may choose to attend sessions in their track of primary interest or choose sessions across more than one track. We encourage you to personalize your experience to enhance your practice. Don’t forget to look for the power sessions that are special features of ONS Congress and offer crosscutting topics. There are also sessions that allow you to take a deeper dive into a topic, many of which are separated into a two-part format. Up to 160 nursing continuing professional development (NCPD) contact hours are available to ONS Congress attendees. If you are currently Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC)-certified and have completed your individual learning needs assessment (ILNA), you’ll be able to find many sessions to fit your certification renewal needs. Sessions will be available on-demand through May 27, 2021. With this special feature, you will have additional time to absorb all the information you want and need from this year’s conference! ONS Congress is filled with opportunities for attendees to network with other innovators, such as oncology nurses, industry representatives, and other interdisciplinary oncology professionals and colleagues. Take advantage of these wonderful opportunities to expand your knowledge, develop questions to guide future research, seek solutions to challenges within your own practice, and influence the future of cancer care. Revisiting the theme for this year’s meeting, a catalyst is something that initiates or speeds up a reaction, without itself being consumed. As I think about this, it truly resonates as a reminder that if we are to continue to be a catalyst for innovative care, we need to remember to seek opportunities for self-renewal. ONS Congress is one of those opportunities for oncology nurses. The knowledge, narratives, and support for oncology nurses are here within this event. I sincerely hope you enjoy this conference and that you are renewed and energized as you continue to be a catalyst for innovative care. Enjoy all that ONS Congress has to offer and thank you for participating in this event. Sincerely, Susan Yackzan PhD, APRN, MSN, AOCN® ONS Congress 2021 Content Planning Team Chair 02 #ONSCongress • congress.ons.org

MORE WAYS TO LEARN FOR NEW ONCOLOGY NURSES The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) now has two exciting products focused on new oncology nurses. The Oncology Nurse Orientation Program, available for institutional purchase only, provides didactic content for nurses new to oncology. This program builds on the Foundations of Oncology Nursing Practice Bundle (formerly Oncology Nurse Orientation Bundle) and includes flexible preceptor-led activities. The ONS Oncology Nurse Orientation Program content is evidence-based, incorporates ONS standards and guidelines, and supports new oncology nurses working toward certification based on the ONS Oncology Nurse Generalist Competencies. The program addresses the following topics: • Nursing scope of practice • Legal and ethical issues • Biology of cancer • Overview of medical, surgical, and radiation oncology • Most commonly used chemotherapy and targeted agent drug categories • Disease states of breast, colon, and lung cancers and hematologic malignancies • Vascular access selection considerations With the Foundations of Oncology Nursing Practice Bundle, new oncology nurses will learn how to care for patients with cancer by starting at the beginning. This bundle consists of three individual courses that will provide guidance through a progression of topics, starting with an explanation of what cancer is and how it forms, to how it is treated, and ends with how to safely administer chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
