2021 NEBRASKA ARTIST BIENNIAL Sample application begins on page 5 Questions? Contact sara@galley1516.org ▪ What is the Biennial? The Biennial is a juried exhibition of work by Nebraska artists. In 2017, Gallery 1516 introduced the Nebraska Artist Biennial exhibition to further our mission to serve Nebraska artists. That first show brought together over 50 works from a diverse range of artists and awarded thousands of dollars of prize money. The 2019 Biennial expanded to include three-dimensional art and over 90 artists, continuing to showcase the state’s artistic talent. All submissions for the Biennial are reviewed blindly by a panel of judges from across the state of Nebraska. This process ensures artwork is chosen without bias or name-recognition. The Biennial is open to all Nebraska artists, including students and current and former residents. This year, the Biennial is also hitting the road! After being exhibited at Gallery 1516, selected works from the show will form a traveling exhibition that will be displayed at the Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA) in Kearney. ▪ When is the Biennial? The 2021 Nebraska Artist Biennial will be shown at Gallery 1516 in Omaha from May – August 2021. Selected pieces from the show will then be on display at MONA in Kearney during September 2021.* *Please note that the exact dates of the exhibition are subject to change due to the unpredictable circumstances of COVID-19. ▪ Eligibility The Biennial is open to all artists who have a connection to Nebraska. This includes: o Nebraska residents, both current & former o Students at any Nebraska school, both current & former o Members of Nebraska-based arts groups or societies, Bemis residents, etc. Page 1 of 8
▪ Entry Fee The application is FREE. This year we are waiving the usual entry fee due to the financial difficulties caused by the pandemic. This is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Fred & Eve Simon Charitable Foundation. ▪ Accepted Categories Painting Sculpture Drawing Ceramics/Pottery Printmaking Multimedia/Other Photography Student Please choose the category that most closely describes your work. The Student category covers artists of any age currently enrolled in a school in Nebraska, including high schools, community colleges, universities, etc. If none of the categories fit your work, please choose the ‘Other’ category. ▪ Selection Process and Exhibition Applications open in January 2021 and must be submitted by the deadline listed on the gallery website. Late applications will not be accepted. All submissions are final. Each artist can submit up to 2 works for consideration. All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges. Judging is done blind to ensure unbiased selections; the judges only see the artwork you submit, not your name or information. Between 75- 100 works will be selected for 2021 Biennial exhibition. (Please note: you may be asked to bring your artwork to be seen in person for further review. This is part of the selection process and does NOT guarantee a place in the final exhibition.) After the final pieces have been selected, the judges will also determine the top pieces in each of the 8 categories listed above. These pieces will form the traveling exhibition that will be shown at the Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA) in Kearney following the end of Gallery 1516’s exhibition. Page 2 of 8
