2021 LAW EAME Regional Meeting Speaker Biographies Giles Watson GILESWATSON Giles Watson helps law practices realise their potential through coaching, consultancy and tailored professional development. He specialises in client-facing challenges such as positioning and strategy, pricing, marketing & business development, customer experience & client service. Prior to setting up his own consultancy in 2015, he managed the Practice management Course at Queensland Law Society, ran a practice management quality mark scheme for the Law Society of England and Wales, and was a business development manager for three London law firms. Giles has a degree in Politics, a Masters in Marketing and an MBA. He lectures on costs communication at the QUT Legal Practice Course, and on 'Dynamic strategy and disruptive innovation' for Kaplan Business school's MBA course. Jonathan Middleburgh Edge International Jonathan Middleburgh consults on human capital issues and coaches senior legal talent in both law firms and legal departments. A former practicing lawyer, he is also trained as an organizational psychologist, Jonathan has a wide range of experience helping law firms and legal departments to develop their senior legal talent so as to maximize business outcomes. Gerry Riskin, B. Com, LLB, P. Admin Edge International Gerry Riskin is an internationally recognized lawyer, author and management consultant. He was managing partner of a law firm in Canada and Hong Kong, and is the author of The Successful Lawyer, Creating The Marketing Mindset, Herding Cats and beyond KNOWING. 2021 LAW EAME Regional Meeting Speaker Biographies Edward Walters Fastcase Ed Walters is the CEO of Fastcase, a legal publishing company based (during non-pandemic times) in Washington, D.C. Fastcase is one of the world’s fastest- growing legal publishers, serving more than 1.1 million subscribers from around the world. Before founding Fastcase, Ed worked at Covington & Burling, in Washington D.C. and Brussels, where he advised Microsoft, Merck, SmithKline, the Business Software Alliance, the National Football League, and the National Hockey League. His practice focused on corporate advisory work for software companies and sports leagues, and intellectual property litigation. Camilla Andersen University of Western Australia, School of Law Dr Camilla Baasch Andersen is Professor of International Commercial Law at University of Western Australia. She is a Trade Law Expert for UNCITRAL and a member of the core group of the Pro-Active Think Tank. She has written extensively on the CISG, international commerce, pro-active approaches to law and comparative commercial law. She works closely with business, government and academia in pursuit of improving legal solutions, recently on her new project on Comic Book Contracting and the visualisation of law (see www.comicbookcontracts.com). Robert de Rooy Creative Contracts (Pty) Ltd Robert de Rooy is a commercial lawyer and the developer of Comic Contracts, the world’s first fully illustrated contract. He is the founder of Creative Contracts (Pty) Ltd. The purpose of the company is to afford low-literate people the dignity of autonomously understanding the contracts they sign. 2021 LAW EAME Regional Meeting Speaker Biographies Peter Corner Alternative Contracting A historian by training, Peter Corner took an interest in Comic Contracts from the beginning due to the way the use of images recalled contracts from an earlier age. Upon seeing parties interested in Comic Contracts being turned away by his wife, Professor Camilla Anderson due to restrictions on her time, Peter decided to see how fast and how affordable the contract creating process could be made. And then was borne Alternative Contracting. Working on visualizing contracts is a fascinating process and funnily my historical background, absorbing masses of information and distilling that information into a few key points, is proving a key part of the process. Steven Roberts One IT Services Steven Roberts started his engineering career in the United Kingdom after graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Computing, specialising in networks and communications. Steven has called Australia home since 2002 and after nearly a decade working in large organisations, including service delivery to the Northern Territory Government, Steven started One IT Services in 2010. Steven’s business has more than quadrupled in size during a period that has seen the greatest change in the cyber-threat landscape. One IT Services has been at the forefront of IT service delivery for over ten years and Steven has provided cybersecurity consultation to businesses of all levels and sizes while also advising on multiple IT Risk Committees. Additionally, Steven has built One IT Services as a premium MSP which is now the largest IT Service Provider to the legal industry in the NT. Lawrence Tan Eldan Law, LLP Lawrence Tan is a founding partner of our member firm, Eldan Law, LLP in Singapore. Lawrence is certified with the Singapore Mediation Centre ("SMC"), Singapore International Mediation Institute (“SIMI”), International Mediation Institute (“IMI”) and as a Mediation Advocate. 2021 LAW EAME Regional Meeting Speaker Biographies Deborah McMurray Content Pilot Deborah McMurray is the founder, CEO and Strategy Architect of Content Pilot. She has three decades of service to the legal marketing community, including being the former head of two large law firm marketing departments and holding many national roles in the Legal Marketing Association. McMurray was inducted into the Legal Marketing Association (LMA) Hall of Fame in 2008 and as a Fellow in the College of Law Practice Management in 2007; as well as on the inaugural list of National Law Journal’s “2013 Top 50 Legal Business Trailblazers & Pioneers” and included in LawDragon’s Top 100 Legal Consultants since the list was started. McMurray has also co-authored several books published by the American Bar Association Law Practice Management Division, with the latest being, “The Lawyer’s Guide to Marketing on the Internet, 4th edition.” Michael Blachly Gray Reed & McGraw, LLP Michael Blachly is the Chief Marketing Officer of our Houston, Texas member firm, Gray Reed, a full-service, Texas law firm with approximately 150 attorneys. Michael brings more than 20 years of experience in corporate marketing, business development and corporate communications primarily centered on driving business in the professional services sector. Michael provides Gray Reed strategic direction on the firm’s business development and marketing initiatives and leads a team responsible for business development, marketing/ branding, marketing technology, creative production, research, public relations, and events. He is a founding member of the Legal Marketing Association's Texas Chapter, served as President of LMA's Southwest Region and has held numerous leadership positions within LMA. He was recognized by LMA as the first recipient of the LMA Southwest Region President’s Award. Michael is also a passionate photographer and has pursued the hobby for most of his life.
